Must...not...flame.....ahhhhh....to......powerful......urge.....AHHHH!
The only standard it made was a standard of medicoricy that effects every FPS now. In my opinion it ruined FPSs. Its an over hyped, average, fps. That's all. (Yay I only minor flamed)

Excuse me if this has been said all ready, but what makes Halo stand out is the balance.. the balance of the weapons, the vehicles, even the maps themselves. It's also Bungie's willingness to go the extra mile, by including Theater, Forge, Firefight, stats-tracking on Bungie.net and online/LAN/splitscreen co-op along side with what is by far the most rewarding console FPS multi-player. If you're strictly asking about what makes the single-player experience stand out, then the question is a little more difficult to answer, but to me, that's never been what makes Halo special.

I noticed that most of the games in the later part of your list are third person. Just sayin' that there is a difference.

Not "first-person shooter" or "FPS"
Just "shooter"

You don't think Twilight had an influence? Ok...
Show me a vampire movie that isn't part of the Twilight saga, in which the vampires sparkle in sunlight, and we'll give you that one.

Back on topic...

Halo DID create a bunch of new conventions which a lot of modern shooters adhere to. Possibly too many in some ways. Resistance: Fall of Man was seen as a novelty for allowing you to carry every weapon in the game around at once, because since Halo, very few FPS games have done that. Before Halo, it was rare to limit people to less than everything.

It also ripped some ideas off from previous shooters, but usually made them work better. It wasn't the first FPS to have regenerating health. It was the first WELL-MADE FPS to do it. BIG difference.

Note that im not a hater on Halo. I actually love it! But heres my problem. When Halo came out it set a new standard for FPS, and almot every shooter has taken after it since. You could say its the core of all FPS to date. But what does Halo possibly have that no other shooter has now? I know this is mostly from my opinion but creativity wise, there isn't much that has been added. Or at least not original to Halo. I just feel like when I play it, its beginning to turn into a blurry screen and all I see are the basics of all guns, armor, and vehicles in todays FPS. So all I ask of you is to tell me what Halo possibly offers that we haven't already seen? I just want to enjoy the series again before I turn into a hater of a game I truly loved.
Halo was one of the first games to introduce people to that dancing ritual they do in FPS, basically you get shot and you can still turn around and have a little dance with your opponent and win the fight due to the huge health, up till that point in time gaming was all about getting the jump on the other team fragging them.... once you were caught out you were dead but Halo switched it up by having you need to unload over an entire clip into a person to kill them.

It also had some crazy ideas Microsoft wouldn't let Bungie implement, like each game you'd start off in a foehammer being dropped off at your destination.
Tribes 2 ?

New standard? That parade of mediocrity?

Oh dear, oh dear.
Halo: combat evolved.
not halo 3.
Don't confuse the two.
You misunderstood me; the entire franchise is shallow.
And Modern warfare isn't?

At least Halo 1 was inventive.
It gave a lot to the modern FPS.
Wait, let me check...

Nope, nowhere did I say Modern Warfare wasn't.
I bet you've never really played halo.

play halo 3 online with friend's for lets say more then a half hour.
It's good fun. Most fun i've ever had with an online shooter is in halo.
You'd loose that bet; the Limited Edition box for Halo 3 is sitting next to me on the shelf as we type.
So i assume that you've played Halo CE.
How was that game shallow?
Indeed I have.

It doesn't get much more generic than Combat Evolved.

Go read The Very Pulse of the Machine and then you'll understand what innovation and creativity is.
Everyone copied Halo CE. Thats why it's generic now.
Also can't find a copy to read can you link me if you have a link?

That's all I have to say on the matter; other than that I find the series mediocre at best.
I see this argument allot and I don't get it because what FPS was doing what halo did before Halo CE. halo set the standards for a control scheme on consoles. thats something that PCs don't have a problem with but Halo had bigger environments better AI, and more fun shooting mechanics than any PC shooter Ive played that came out before Halo CE. In that way halo set the standard for shooters to come period.

Honestly? Play Reach and find out for yourself. Halo has always had a unique universe, even today. The series has gotten stale over the years, no question but with the overhaul done on Reach I guarantee that it will renew your faith in the series.
I don't know why, but I feel like this guy gave me the answer I might have been looking for. Keep posting folks. This is getting interesting.
:D Remember Reach - 14/9/10

I know but comparing the likes of Gears of war and Mass effect to Halo seems a little unfair to halo. Compare it to other FPS games.

A little unfair in terms of story, perhaps. In terms of gameplay, comparing FPS games to RPGs like Mass Effect is almost always unfair on the RPG.

were not talking success were talking influence, as in you can't argue that most console shooters after Halo CE have not adopted regenerating health, holding to weapons at a time, and halos control scheme
You don't think Twilight had an influence? Ok...

And I don't believe, as I said before, that Halo was the instigator. Purely the more popular.

ForensicYOYO said:
Because I had a point thats why.
When I said its the core I explained how that makes anything it does now unoriginal since they all come from the same game.
No, you really didn't. You explained that your opinion was that its own sheer originality was killing it. I think a number of us disagree with your first principles.
No its originalitie isn't killing it, its because so many other games have copied it and expanded, Halo is now left behind not being able expand without them copying someone else.

Could you elaborate more please, I'm not sure what your talking about.

I mean I know your saying "Tribes 2" but it means nothing in context since thats all your saying. You might as well say, "sausages".

Halo takes more skill than any other shooter. I'm a cod4 man, but the balance in Halo allows a higher level of play. It's not simply see someone first and you kill them. There are no god weapons.
This.... this is what I like about Gears of War as well... you have to WORK to kill someone in both titles. The shield makes the battles more intimate. No title is perfect but I would much prefer duking it out in a shotgun dance over getting blown up by an AC-130 that I have little to no chance of surviving.

Sure, ever play tribes 2 ? Every thing you said about halo had been done in tribes 2. You had shields and vast amount of health. This meant that it wasn't all about getting the jump on someone, you still had the opportunity to win the fight even if you were caught out. Therefore Halo is not original for doing this because it has been done before !

I'm going to be careful not to get told off this time, and assume you meant to say "FPS games" and not just "games" there - because I'm fairly certain a Mammoth Tank in Command and Conquer doesn't die easily against a lone infantryman when he attacks it, even if the controlling player isn't looking.

Doom (again)
Doom 2 (again)
Almost everything else based on the Doom Engine (again)
Rise of the Triad
Duke Nukem 3D
Quake
Quake 2
Anything with "Unreal" in the title
Many, many mods for most of the above games.

I'm not even going to bother giving a list the size of the last one... But I could, easily.

Well, if anything Halo has started the trend of incredibly annoying Halo threads.

Halo is fun, and it basically spawned Machinima with Red vs. Blue.

I like it, I play it. I enjoy is story, which is why I read the books to get a deeper look into it.

What does Reach offer? The end of Bungie-made Halo games, which means they're going to make this one the best it can possibly be.
