There be KOTOR Spoilers Ahead

Turn Back If Ye not be wantin' to hear

Just turn around already I don't want to type these things

I cried when Taris was destroyed in Knight's of the Old Republic, I favorited the video on youtube, and it hurts me to see Saul Karath stutter with shock when Malak asks him to orbitally bombard the planet.

Penumbra: Black Plague.

The lone surviving scientist promises to cure you, who are infected with a disease to turn you into a slaughtering beast, and guides you through all sorts of challenges and gives you the first bit of communication with a human (a lady, nonetheless, and well voice-acted) you've had since this batshit insane miner that kills himself. And when you finally get to her, the infection/possession causes you to brutally murder her, crushing her skull with a steel crate as she walks up to meet you.

I felt utterly gutted after that scene, and a few bitter tears of impotent rage were shed.

I've never shed a tear over the loss of anybody in any video game. But there were a few deaths that made me quite sad.

Spoilers ahead and all of that.

1. When you don't have enough points in persuasion in Mass Effect and Ashely shoots Wrex. I let her die on Vermire for that.

2. Eli Vance dying in Half-Life 2: Episode 2. He was one of my favorite characters.

3. When I accidentally got Dogmeat killed in Fallout

4. Captain Price getting shot in Call of Duty 4. He was cool. Unlike the big, stereotypical black guy with the SAW who's name I can't remember right now.

I know grown men who admitted to openly crying at Aeris' death scene during FF7. And these guys are like...thirty-five.

Come on, hit her, she'll get better!
Fix'd to include chauvanism.

I'm definately saying COD4
for the death of Jackson. Jackson's was brutal because he rises to see death and destruction, only to stagger down and die in ashes. The sight was just....moving.

Some of the heartless evil points of the KOTOR series had me back away from the comp for a while to cool off. In fact
In KOTOR when you had the choice to kill Balthazaar and Mission,
my little brother did, and I wouldn't talk to him for days. It just pissed me off that
you basically grew up with those characters, and he slaughtered them in an instant

I don't know about crying but I'm pretty certain that games can evoke emotions. That bit in mass effect for example when I let kaiden die that aroused me immensely.

It is a testament to any entertainment's immersiveness to be able to elicit strong emotions from its audience or participants. Feelings such as joy, shock, disbelief, etc. are just as potent as sorrow, anger, etc., and certain ones are easier to channel than others. Naturally, the audience also does a great deal of decoding and brings in plenty of itself, so not all reactions are going to be predictable. Video games are absolutely no different than anything else in this regard, save for that perhaps the poorly-informed preconceptions of certain film critics may prevent them from ever identifying with an interactive, emotionally-driven narrative.

The difficulty with the Max Payne movie is that the Max Payne game was supposed to be a pastiche of the genre. Payne's absurdly contrived, hard-boiled soliloquies were hilarious and provided some of the best game humour I've ever experienced. The movie, on the other hand, looks like a straight-faced adaptation, so it's kinda missing the point.
This is why I never took anything in max payne seriously.

-and I wish they kept his "trying to pass a bowling ball through his urethra" face in the second game. It was his emotion for everything.

HL2: EP 2. 'nuff said.

*Spoilers*

Remember Fai Dan on Feros in Mass Effect? That one scene made me almost cry because of how devoted he was to his people. Can't find it on Youtube, so I'll describe it. The Thorian has taken over his and his people's minds. He limps towards you "I tried to fight it, but it gets in your head. These people trusted me" more things I can't remember to that effect. Pulls out pistol, aims at you, hand shaking "it wants me to stop you, but I won't." As he pulls pistol toward his own head "I WON'T!" Pulls trigger.

Also, convincing Saren to commit suicide. "Goodbye, Shepard. Thank you."

Emma's death in MGS2. Not the death itself, but her parrot saying "Hal, I miss you" Almost immediately after. Sad.

Bad ending of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed just made me feel so bad for Starkiller. "You could have been my apprentice. My equal... You will serve me, hunt down my enemies until I find a new apprentice. And then you will die."

The ending to FFIX stands out to me, because it's the only time I've ever gotten choked up during a moment of a video game that wasn't sad. The characters in that game were so well developed, and the cheesy romance ending fit the charm of the whole game extremely well. Not to mention doing a very satisfactory job of providing a conclusion for each character's story.

Something a little different from all the emotion about deaths (although HL2:EP2 hit me hard too.)

Those who've played Shenmue II may know of a young girl in the game called Fangmei. If you speak to her enough she may fall in love with you, and if you are in certain places at the right time you'll be able to buy and give her a birthday gift. All of this is nice until you inevitably have to leave Wan Chai, and have to say goodbye those who've helped you there.

Having to watch that poor girl say goodbye was heartbreaking. Made all the worse by the fact I first saw the scenes thanks to following a guide that covered everything from the timing of the birthday events, to how to make her fall in love with you. I felt like such an utter cock for tricking this poor (albeit virtual) girl into loving me knowing that I'd have to leave her.

There were also some similar emotions brought up in some of the scenes with Nozomi in the first game, but not to the same extent.

The mainstream media really wants to have it both ways when it comes to video games. By that I mean that in one breath they'll say that games are emotionally destructive and affecting (blaming video games for violence), and in the next they'll say that games are non-substantive and made for kids (the review in the OP).

Either video games create emotion, or they don't. I happen to believe, as do many of you, that they can create a very wide range of emotions.

Well one emotion I have never felt in a game was saddness. Many is the time I have wanted to let out my inner Darth Vader(ya know choke someone and snap their neck from across the room, anyone?) on some twat of a character but never cry.

Games haven't yet reached the level of narrative sophistication for me for them to elicit actual physical tears.

...

Sorry, but all the games I ever played so far fall drastically short in storytelling and character development when compared to their bigger brothers, such as 6feet. They certainly have the potential to, but they need to mature a LOT first. Gaming is still very much in its infancy as a storytelling medium, in my opinion.
This.

Get back to me when MOST writers, directors, and actors in this industry can actually write, direct, or act.
