Let's see...

Mass Effect. Virmire. If you've played the game, you know. "I know, Commander. I don't regret a thing."

Aerith's death in FFVII. That damn music gets me everytime.

Lost Odyssey...just...to quote tvtropes.com, "It doesn't just tug on your heartstrings, it plays them like a harp."

FFX's ending.

Forgot one...KOTOR.
Having to rescue Bastila from the dark side. No persuasion will do, there is just one way to do it...admit your love for her. It's cliche, but damn, is it powerful.

Tales of the Abyss. Seriously; Symphonia has nothing on TotA.

It's like the developers sat down, picked out which characters they wanted the player to love the most, and then wrote out their death scenes before writing the plot for the rest of the game. And while they were writing the rest of the game, they threw in a sympathetic villain that you wanted to hate (especially after seeing him slaughter random old people and just screwing your party over left and right), but couldn't because there was that little niggling doubt in the back of your mind that screamed that oh, gee, he's not totally bonkers.

I was sad when
your character kills Carlos to put him out of his misery on Saint's Row 2.

I didn't smile for a while after that.

The end of MGS 3, for the reasons already posted.

Agro's "death" and "resurrection" in SotC.

Though I haven't played MGS2 yet, from what I've heard, Emma (Otacon's sister) had a pretty sad death.

Out of all of those, MGS3 came the closest to making me teary-eyed. And I second FFIX's ending.

I had mixed feelings about that. On the one hand it was sad, on the other I'd just spent ages dragging her along underwater and sniping for her and then she goes and dies.

Stupid *****. -.-

So she was like the first translator in God of War 2, only sexier and had a more developed character? Speaking of which, Titan Mode, first translator nearly brought me to tears every time he dies. To this day, I haven't beaten that part. At one point all that remained was a single hound. He bit me and I died (I was down to my last sliver of health). That was a sign that I needed to let go and move on. That was how I avoided a game from mentally breaking me.

Psychonaut's underwater race.
Wait...that wasn't sad....at all....
Nope, but it was intense, where Raziel's fate was truly on the line against his worst horror. It was following on from the 'getting under the skin of the character' idea.

Oh, and when Sniper Wolf shot Naomi. I didn't want to go back for the sniper rifle because I didn't want to leave her.
Forgot about this! The whole using naomi as bait was just.....wrong

This may seem out of date but it comes form the heart. Gaz why? He was taken before his time... Oh Gaz so cool they only needed to name him once

Ummm, I am probably going to burn for this, but what game are you taling about? "Hides behind rock"
*Nukes rock*
Call of Duty 4.
FOR SHAME.
You guys know that in the very end mission-mile high club- at the start when they are cutting their way into the plane you can clearly hear both gaz and the scottish guy from the flashback? The scottish guy (the one that taught price in one shot one kill and all ghillied up) says: "shuurley("surely" with a scotch accent) you can't be serious" and gaz replies "Oh I'm serious...and dont call me shirley" at least thats who it sounds like talking to me-the scottish voice might even be soap himself speaking for the first time? his surname was mactavish. Haven't looked into this though so feel free to shoot my theory down in flames :)
Yeah, Gaz is shot in the back of the Head by Zakhaev. He's dead.

Someone mentioned KH1, but the ending of the sequel really got me. I mean, after two (three including the GBA one) whole games of searching, he FINALLY finds his friends, FINALLY everything comes together and they're back home. The final movie was a real release of emotion, and it all came out. Fortunately I was alone and nobody had to know, but now I've told the entire forum so hooray for that.
Yeah that ending got me too, becuase it makes you think

that Sora and Riku are stuck in the realm of darkness, and then Kairi's note from waaaaay back at the beginning shows up it makes you feel warm

and then theres the bit where

Axel dies, because in the end he turned out to be pretty awesome, and the stuf he says to Sora is a little tear-jerky

and then of course there's the whole Aeris thing in FF7, and in Dirge of Cerberus

after Vincent blows up Omega and doesn't show up again unless you sit through the credits got me a little sad, but it soon turned to rage when they finally got round to showing Red XIII in the game, for all of four seconds yawning, when Cait bloody Sith
got a whole damn annoying level to himself

SPOILERS BELOW

I don't think I have ever cried, I think I got upset my first playthrough of Final Fantasy VII when Aeris died, but that was AGES ago before it became common knowledge. I also got quite upset about Ada's death in Leon's Resident Evil 2 story in Part 2, but then she came back so it was all okay, but nope never cried.

While this didn't have an impact on me in the way the end of MGS3 did, I certainly was in a pretty down mood over it (especially because it's a serious moment in a not-so-serious game that manages to have more emotion behind its action than anything in a GTA game in my opinon), which sort of made the whole systematic revenge trip that you embark on against The Brotherhood all the sweeter feeling. Normally I would've felt a little disturbed at

putting Maero's girlfriend in the trunk of a car and having him run over it in his monster truck without him knowing

But knowing what she had done to someone who's only real problem was being associated with your character and being the main point of contact, made me feel good, in a "justice has been served" kind of way.

Nobody shedding a tear over a video game character's death is a load of bull.
When my cousin got to the end of Resident Evil and Barry was killed by tyrant my cousin had tears running down the sides of his face.

One of my most memorable heart wrenching moments was in Bioshock after defeating a Big Daddy, and having to endure the crying of the little sister. It didn't matter whether you intended to save her or rip her to bits, it got to you.

"Mr. Bubbles? Why won't you get up Mr. Bubbles? Mr. Bubbles nooooo!"

As far as movies go, the only time I ever felt real agony of the plight of a character had to be in Cast Away. When Wilson floated away I didn't cry, but it sure tore me up. I don't know why, but it made me sad.

"Wilson? Willlllsoooooon!!"

Film critics are horrible for conveying the message of the inherent superiority of film as evidence by the inherent failing of video games.

While there a lot of this lies in the current quality and sophistication ratio in games as compared to film (and Max Payne was not a very good movie and, as such, is just begging to incite these kinds of comments) Film experts are quite vicious with video games.\

Some of it is deserved, even gamers / developers don't respect the medium as blanketly as movie goers / creators. When these two things change, so will the criticism.

As it stands, we've seen many examples of people connecting to the games they played and the characters the game has introduced them to. For me, the good ending of Rule of Rose was a very beautiful tear jerker.

While neither of these actually brought me to tears, they sure hit me emotionally like a ton of bricks.

First is the ending of Half-Life 2: Episode 2. I'm not going to list why, as many of you already know what I'm talking about, and it's been spoiled above. I still can't believe they actually did that. Makes me want Episode 3 even more just to see how much Alyx has changed.

Second was the ending of Homeworld. Not because the ending was sad. Far from it. It was because I realized the game and, consequently, the story were at an end. I almost got teary eyed because I simply didn't want it to end. As excited as I was for it, it's unfortunate the sequel didn't live up to it's predecessor's quality.

the end of halo 3, definitely. i cried because it was the biggest cockslap ending in the history of gaming, EVER
Did you watch the "legendary" ending?
yeah i watched the legendary ending but i was pissed because of all those ads they showed with master chief being held in the hand of a brute chief like a rag doll, only to look up and turn on the plasma grenade... and that wasn't in there. never been so upset in my life. and like yahtzee, if you only play the campaign of halo you'd have to admit that it is a very poor game indeed. halo 1's campaign was infinitely more superior
