Just because someone is famous for something, it doesn't mean we should pay attention to their views on other things.

He may have a point, at least from his understanding of video games.

These brutal video games he decries the probably same ones which he thinks has "somebody getting their fucking head chopped off with a samurai sword while getting fucked by a goblin up the arse with a laser".

When you seem to believe that video games comprise of Guitar Hero and the genre of "Samurai sword goblin laser arse fucking", it's easy to seem how you think the latter could cause riots and disorder amongst the youth.

Still, he only said brutal TV and brutal video games are a reason for the violence, not the reason, and it doesn't take a huge leap of faith to believe that someone who is desensitised to violence would act with uncontentious violence when part of a mass hysteria mob.

Apart from being comically out of touch with a subject he has little interest in, everything else he says is pretty much spot on and echoes the sentiments of a lot of people on this subject.

I'm gonna ignore the bit where he explicitly calls out videogames, simply because I agree with most of what else he says. So, no, I'm not going to demonize Noel for this. He mostly speaks sense.

Plus, his new song is aces.
Just try and ignore the supreme idiot known as Chris Evans if you can.

I agree, the rioters are complete morons shitting in their own nest. I hope they all get the book thrown at them. Then the shelves. Then the library, brick by brick. Well, perhaps throwing bricks at them is not the best solution...

However, blaming computer games and TV is absolutely ridiculous. People have been rioting for longer than TV and computer games have ever existed. They will continue to riot long after TV and computer games are considered quaint.

I agree with most of what he said but I wish people would stop with this stupid knee-jerk reaction of anything bad being the fault of new media.

For instance I was in Gloucester when the riot there occured and I didn't go out and join them because I wanted cause mindless violence, if anything seeing violence in games has made me not want to see it in real life, as it is I have a harmless way to vent my anger.

So now, as well as hating the overplayed "Wonderwall", I can hate Noel Gallagher as well for a legitimate reason too.

In short - a man desperately searching for some kind of reason for recent events seizes on the nearest thing he can find.

This is why going for easy answers is bad. Funnily enough, rioters throughout history are doing the same thing when they spew rubbish like 'I hate the rich', 'they took our jobs', 'they're dirty communists anyway' and 'burn the heathens'.

I'm just going to start blaming shit on the media. Shooting in Russia? Fox news is to blame!

The real reason for the riots? Hidden messages in rock music! Just play some Oasis songs backwards at varying speeds and you get barely intelligible words! They are clearly messages from the dark lord SATAN!

My god people open your eyes!

It's actually rather amazing the amount of people in this thread who have either just read the title of the article, or just skimmed to the part where it said 'video games'.
Noel actually brings up some pretty valid things there - what with the whole desensitisation of/overexposure to violence and death in all forms of media, the sudden, primal want for violence in people in modern society, the lack of foresight in these riots, the stupidity etc. All of those are valid points.
All of them.
Including the media one, which does include videogames.
I mean.....all of these things were already brought up in, oh, I dunno, nearly ever single novel written by Chuck Palahniuk of Fight Club fame, and in Camus' The Outsider, and in Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho. Just because the setting is suddenly real doesn't mean that we should discount a view because it involves something we like.
Admittedly - we shouldn't look for a scapegoat either, be it physical or psychological.

That said, this still doesn't excuse Noel Gallagher from his "Massive Twat" status - a status, which, I might add, was formally given to him by the Queen when he was born.

I used to respect Noel since between him and Liam, he was the brains behind the band. Well, looks like it's possible for an imbecile to be the brains behind a band headed by a monkey.

You will forgive me if I dismiss him out of hand. Mr Gallagher is certainly entitled to his opinion, but it doesn't make it right. Im sorry for his losses during the riots, but I would ask this misguided artist to look beyond the easy targets. What about lack of housing? unemployment issues? Segregation... to name a few.

Oh sure, games may be there in the mix somewhere but i believe this soup has many more ingredients.

I'm sorry, but... who?

OT: I can see where he's coming from, and he actually does point out the idiocy of these riots.

Notice to idiots who want to yell an uneducated opinion about 'the reasons for the violence' in regard to modern conveniences.

This crap has been happening since the dawn of man. Shut up and accept that this kind of thing happens: its an ugly side of human nature you need to accept as inevitable. All you can do is look for ways to postpone said inevitability.

There are hundreds of millions of people in this world who play video games. Less than 0.1% have done this kind of thing.

Only have one point to make...

Noel Gallagher is a dick..

It's widely if not worldly known that he's a dick. His opinion on anything means less than hamster shit.

Well, on the bright side, he's not shouting for games to be banned because of the riots.

Still, I think he's throwing the blame somewhere, which is odd, because it wasn't too long ago music was the scapegoat like games are now. Technically, music still sometimes is, just not his particular genre.

And remember kids! There was no violence in the world before Pong! *wink wink*
