Given that the gaming media has already attached itself to this like a pageview-hungry lamprey, I fully expect the result of this news cycle to be "Noel Gallagher: Silly Git," but I've got my fingers crossed that you Escapist readers will know better. I'm not asking you to side with the man, but put yourself in his shoes, and think of the idiotic, baffling statements you'd toss out while fearing that your home might be torched or your window smashed in with a brick.
This sounds a lot like allowing sympathy to preclude an open critique of the opinion. It's one thing to "not side with him." It's another thing entirely to say nothing at all about the inaccuracy of his statement, simply because we understand
why he would be irrational.
Having sympathy for someone is great. But demonstrating that sympathy doesn't mean you're not allowed to call what's wrong
wrong. Attacking the position is not the same as attacking the man, and having sympathy for the man should not be the same as giving up any right to say anything bad about the position.
It's a ridiculous position that violent media is the cause for this. Riots have occurred throughout human history because there's a certain amount of violence in our nature. It could very well be that this nature is
why violent media sells in the first place. And what about those rioters who don't play video games? Or the gamers that aren't currently rioting? By trying to attach some causal relationship, Gallagher is being irrational.
