This could have been anyone from London saying this. He's a rock star; if he started talking about music, I would listen. But if he's talking about video games, I value his opinion as much as any random person on the street.

Understandably he's upset, so of course he tries to rationalize the situation by creating a scapegoat. Again, something any person would do if they didn't understand.

I have to say he has a point to a certain degree. The violence shown in today's media including music, videogames, tv and movies has desensitized modern society's perspective on violence. But the real culprit is still human stupidity which results in the inability to separate fictional violence from reality and not do stupid shit like riot and so forth.

You know what I'm super surprised about...FOX news hasn't jumped on this bandwagon. I'm fucking shocked about this. Of course mister Oasis man is wrong, but still, wow.

All riots end up this way, from the L.A riots to the riots supposedly about justifying Lutheranism and Calvinism.

I'm still waiting for the riot against congress over here. Should be fun.

Given that the gaming media has already attached itself to this like a pageview-hungry lamprey, I fully expect the result of this news cycle to be "Noel Gallagher: Silly Git," but I've got my fingers crossed that you Escapist readers will know better. I'm not asking you to side with the man, but put yourself in his shoes, and think of the idiotic, baffling statements you'd toss out while fearing that your home might be torched or your window smashed in with a brick.
This sounds a lot like allowing sympathy to preclude an open critique of the opinion. It's one thing to "not side with him." It's another thing entirely to say nothing at all about the inaccuracy of his statement, simply because we understand why he would be irrational.

Having sympathy for someone is great. But demonstrating that sympathy doesn't mean you're not allowed to call what's wrong wrong. Attacking the position is not the same as attacking the man, and having sympathy for the man should not be the same as giving up any right to say anything bad about the position.

It's a ridiculous position that violent media is the cause for this. Riots have occurred throughout human history because there's a certain amount of violence in our nature. It could very well be that this nature is why violent media sells in the first place. And what about those rioters who don't play video games? Or the gamers that aren't currently rioting? By trying to attach some causal relationship, Gallagher is being irrational.

Attacks his brother with a cricket bat... Then goes and blames pointless violence on home entertainment.

There are hundreds of millions of people in this world who play video games. Less than 0.1% have done this kind of thing.[/b]
I believe that the last quoted figure of game players was one billion people. A sixth of the world's population.

Including everyone who's ever gone on a rampage since the 1970's, I think we'd be pushed to get it into treble figures.

So, it's probably less than 0.000001%. Which I think is the same chance of becoming the President of the United States, or being killed by a part fallen from a plane.

Sharks are nearly 3 times as dangerous as gamers, at 3 hundred million to 1. Actually...that doesn't sound as good in hindsight...

Except for the bullshit about video games i completely agree.....
I also love the way people are acting as though he's stood on a soap box on Hyde Park corner saying " HEAR ME! HEAR ME! I think these wretched riots were caused by the one great evil in this world.... VIDEO GAMES" *DUH DUH DUH*
Anyway 25 years ago and he probably would of been involved.

That was basically my view of him before I read this news story and my opinion hasn't changed. He does have a point, the riots are pretty stupid.
Also, He's not only blaming videogames, he clearly included TV, implying violent media as a whole. But I really don't see how violent media is responsible. But I've never heard anything intelligent attributed to Gallagher, so I can easily just just ignore something stupid.

What the fuck does the media have to do with the riots? The reason the riots started in the first place was because the people were angry at the government for raising tuition fees and essentially lying their asses off. Couple that with incompetent fat cat politicians whose only goals are to protect their own interests and it's no wonder a mob formed. All that was needed was a spark to provoke it and there you have it, riots.

Quite a few riots in London, I believe they were all caused by video games.
