There's about ten times as much grind in FFXI than any other MMO I've played. No offense Stammer, but really... there is. It also has the most frustrating crafting system, and the most broken economy.
Like I said, grind-tastic, but there are alternatives now. They've recently fixed the crafting system, and our economy is as good, if not better than most other MMOs- especially World of Warcrap (and yes, I realize you weren't comparing it to that game).

A world in which I actually matter. WoW did that for a while when An'Quaraj (spelled that wrong, don't care) opened up and people contributed to opening it. I want that, only more so. A world in which all areas can be conquered and then defended, where players can build things like homes or towers, where a group can alter the landscape. Conquered areas wouldn't be changed immediately, either. They would have to be rebuilt by the conquering side, both NPCs and players.

It should be able to be played alone or in groups, none of this "You must at some point group with people" that forces you to wait around until enough strangers decide that they need to do that too and help you.

Also, great gameplay and graphics, with a small (less than $10 a month) fee, if any.
Genius. If someone built something like that, I'd play it.

Look up "Darkfall Online". That's what I want. Less grind (sort of), more realism, and the opportunity to be a total dick to people regardless of what they've ever done to me. Also running a business would be interesting.

1. A monthly fee, without one all MMO's are pointless and utter shite. You get what you pay for. I will fucking castrate the next fucker who says 'Guild Wars' to me. It's an ORPG, not an MMO.

2. Not level based, build up any skills you want over time, with caps of course.

3. Penalty for death, you loose everything you're carrying and suffer,

4. Immersion & and some realism, you have to eat etc.

5. Fantasy but no fucking elves.

Basically Ultima Online, oh wait I'm still playing it! I know a new version is never going to happen due to sales figures of these popular MMOs, but I can always dream :)

I like the idea of MMOs it's just all the ones that exist are crap. But for the record.

No grind. You should be able to reach the level cap reasonably quickly, if you want to keep playing that's what alts are for.

Actual gameplay. Proper level design, combat where skill and strategy actually matter.

Co-op play encouraged. No stupid grind quests where you have to shoe off other players so you can get enough rats teeth. Give good experience bonuses to groups and make it easy to find quests that scale to the group you are with.

Interesting classes. No trinity but interesting and varied abilities.

Don't break flow when a player dies. City of X had this down about perfectly. If you died you got xp debt so levelling was slower. It's enough of a discouragement to make you want to avoid dying but means the game is still fun to play. Also the more you die the easier the game gets. Perfect.

City of X would have been perfect if the levelling was quicker and there were more interesting missions. DDO would have been perfect if the social system worked and they didn't patch out the entire game because they thought it was an exploit.

They could stop following the Bioware method of shoehorning turn-based gameplay into real-time and just be one or the other. Lunia did an OK job as an action game with a hint of RPG.

Heres a question... why are all MMO's fantasy based? I'd like to see one thats like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. in terms of setting and game play feel.

I doubt that anything would. I've tried WoW, CoX, and a few of the smaller Korean games. CoX lasted the longest, but I still got bored inside of a month.

I like a good, solid plot even in action games -- and not one that doesn't even BEGIN until I'm 30th level.

I don't like grinding. I don't like games where it feels like all I'm doing is building up a higher and higher kill count.

I'm not fond of gaming with strangers in general. I prefer my opponents/allies to be seated next to me on the couch.

Finally, if a game is sufficiently unfair, I'm going to stop playing no matter what kind of game it is. I lost track of how many times in CoH I died because someone led a high-level monster into a mid-level zone (or, in one case, because a high-level monster or a Troll rave just spontaneously appeared out of nowhere).

I wouldn't put up with this from a console game, let alone something with a subscription fee ...

lol, I love how you guys are basically saying things that would make improvements to World of Warcrap, thus reinforcing my points on why it's the epitome of a bad video game.

I think an MMO should have choice. Your race, job, and equipment should customize how you play, as opposed to whether or not you can win in a fight. Again, this is why I like Final Fantasy XI, but I think even that game needs more choice. The more diverse your characters can be (without one overpowering another) is what would make me join one MMO over another. FFXI only has 8 different faces per race, which is a really pathetically small number (though .dat changes can lead up to infinite numbers).

I agree. Unfortunately, no matter how much customization you put into an MMO, once you reach about 500,000 players, there's no such thing as a unique character. City of Heroes/Villains was as close as any game will come to allowing such a thing.

Well, I play MMOs, but I'm getting really burnt out on them.

What I really want is an MMO like Star Wars Galaxies pre-NGE to come back. You didn't need to do combat in that game to have an great time. You could do so many professions and approach the game from so many different ways, unlike most modern MMOs which focus soley on combat.

Evolution. have the game start off with warcraft and end with jedi's. Maybe have diffrent worlds you move up to with wormholes that will take you to your the next Level / Area. oh I dont want to pay subscriptions and all my ideas are patent pending.

No pay monthly. I know that isn't really possible but I refuse to pay £100s for one single game.
What the fudge? Dude, lots of games do that, Guild Wars?
Also, just to be clear, I am not recommending GW, I think the level 20 cap is pretty dumb, and I don't like the kind of limited choice, I guess. I personally play MMO's, and I've tried many, but I want a good one like WoW, but with guns and a sci-fi feel. I know Ben said Tabula Rasa was pretty boring, but I can stand that. I may try it.

Edit: after reading some more of your posts, I deduce half (or more) of you are retarded. I'm not gonna quote all of you, because my mercenaries might see it, and go after you. And also it'd make a huge quote towers and I'd get banhammered. But mostly the mercenary thing. Let me address some of the issues.

1)"No one else playing" That's called a private server, which is illegal. You mine as well play a regular ol' RPG. If you don't like the fan base of an MMO, then maybe you shouldn't be playing that MMO. Or if you really like what it's got going, ignore the stupid people, i.e. half the game.

2)"End to the story" That'd mean gameplay would stop altogether. A story isn't usually what drives an MMO, but without a complex and diverse story, it's just a bunch of random people. Also, if the story is done, developers can't add anything to a game.

3)"Explosions, Explosions and more Explosions" OK, this one I agree with.

4)"Guns, less of a fantasy feel" Many MMO's are Sci-Fi, see Tabula Rasa and Eve Online. But yes, I'd like to see a game successfully incorporate guns, and not just regular old guns, powerful, new and unique guns. And not in modern society, in a Sci-Fi feel. I can safely say an MMO about cops would be grindtastic and boring.

5)'Less grind" OK, I can't really post anything in this section that won't piss a bunch of people off, so I'll try and keep on the line. MMO's use grind as a major tool to get you to play more, and therefore increase profit. WoW has a bunch of grind, but it pulls it off so fantastically you've never even know it's doing it. Now, one might argue to the point, "What? Of course I do!" You're probably playing it wrong. Now I don't mean wrong as in not right, because there's no right way to play an MMO; I mean you're not fully immersed in the game. If you were, you'd never know you were grinding.

6)"Free" I was a little confused when I heard this. I don't know if you want the MMO to be free or the subscriptions free. If the subscriptions, then see above, Guild Wars. If the MMO itself, then I'm sorry sir, but you are a d-bag. MMO's use dozens (sometimes hundeds) of servers to support it's player base, and it pays people to keep the players in check, and to keep the servers up and running. If it was free, they wouldn't pay anyone to maintenance the servers, and they would become buggy and eventually crash.

I hope I have included your argument. If not, you probably suck/I haven't read your post.

1. No online fee whatsoever if it's a PC game, Xbox Live fee would be acceptable.
2. No avatar level system. Headshot = death.
3. No/Less fantasy. No magic spells.
4. Explosions.
5. Upgrading system. For equipment, not avatar.
6. Faction based and lone-wolf gameplay. A good thing about certain MMOs.
7. Explosions.

I'm sure there's others, but I can't think of them right now.
