i despise anime and mangA cus they made it impossible for me to relate to other nerds in high school.
i wanted to play D&D, magiC the gathering and all the western fantasy stuff and they all wanted to read their backwards comic books and wear those damn naruto headbands
a pox on anime!
Or maybe it's because you're apparently retarded and can't type properly.

Escapists that don't indulge in simply animated and often poorly told Japanese cartoons and comics.
In all honesty anime is often animated in a far superior way to most western cartoons. Compared to the rubbish disney etc churns out anime is quite impressive.

If this were the 90s then western animation would be able to go toe to toe with it easily, Biker mice from mars, batman, Toxic avengers, Attack of the killer tomatoes, Speed racer (the 90s remake), Xmen (the original not the crappy remakes they have now), etc.

But western cartoons these days are done by artists/cartoonists, and i use the terms vveerryyy loosely, who have about as much talent as a mentally disabled squirrel.

Right now, anime is one of the best example of animation of our current time.

I don't see how anime and gaming are related. Enlighten me.
Both make you a shut-in to some extent.
OT: I kind of fade in and out of the anime culture, I hadn't watched it in years before joining the Escapist, and seeing all the recommendations on the weekly "recommend me an anime" threads made me curious. Now, I'm a regular viewer.

I'm afraid I simply haven't cared much for the anime which I've seen. The art styles, the plots and back-stories, I just prefer other things. Just not an anime guy, I suppose.

I also fail to see a how anime and gaming are related. Most of that which I've run into has been television based, or a movie of some sort. Is there some major connection that I'm missing?

I love anime and manga, though, by no means is all of it good. To be able to like it AT ALL, you have to be open to expirience other cultures, and really, open to cartoons in general...

If you want humour, I recommend Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Pt.1 is hilarious (while still being focussed on action). slthough Pt.2 not so much... still, If I were to sum up the entire series as a whole in 1 word, I would go with FUCKING EPIC. (and yes i know. that was intentional.)

the problem with a lot of anime and manga that I would expect a lot of escapists viewer to have a problem with is

A. Most of it is targetted to younger kids (why pretty much all shoenen protagonists are 15..)
-and to go allong with this, the afore mentioned DBZ syndrome
B. There are cleshayed jokes, and a lot of references that have to do with Japanese culture, which you have to know somehing about, to be able to get...
C. plot lines that are downright silly when compared to much of the more serious western culture entertainment.

However, Know that Anime encompasses a HUGE range of types and there IS a sub-genre much devoted to college-age males. look up Seinen.

The seires I would recomend that do'nt come off as convoluted or as silly as other but rather seem to go about things with a realistic/serious (yet entertaining) mannor are:

1: Death note
2: Code Geass
3: Black Lagoon
4: Elfen Lied
5: Hellsing/Hellsing Ultimate
-honorable mention: FullMetal Alchemist (Brotherhood)

that would be because "Jesus" is a propper noun. idiot.

as for the connection between gaming and anime, I dunno, the 2 sorta seem to go hand in hand to me *shrugs*

It's like gaming is actually a PART of anime culture...

I mean to like anime, you pretty much HAVE to be a "nerd" to begin with (or at least haave a nerd-like mindset) and Nerds like video games, that's just a scientific fact. =P

{although, it does'nt necessarily work the other way around...}

I hate it, in all honesty.

This guy posted this 'hilarious' video of some girl with blue hair and just remixed her voice into a crappy J Pop song.

There was nothing funny about it in any way.

I guess it's just not my thing. I stick to live action stuff more.
I don't really have TV in my house, but when I can I watch crap like Dog the Bounty Hunter and Lion Man. Oh and I'm a wrestling fan, so TNA and WWE.

I also LOVE LOVE LOVE 24.
And I recently got the Buffy DVDs, which was my teenage program. Everyone else was watching Friends, which I don't really get.

At the moment I'm reading Anansi Boys (Neil Gaiman) and then I'll follow it with re-reading the Divine Comedy.

I liked Neon Genesis Evangelion until they decided to take it down a philosophical, dark "bullshit" route (the first... Twelve or so episodes are really good). I liked Ghost in the Shell until I realised they had hoodies that had camoflage, and noone's ever managed to explain to me why the men got them, when the women needed to be naked.

Then my nan got me Urotsukidoji : Legend of the Overfiend for Christmas a few years back because she thought it'd be a decent "monster trashes city" movie. I still own it, but noone talks about the night we decided to watch it as a family...

My last chance I decided to give the medium was Naruto. Why... Are ninjas in bright orange and yelling a lot? People like this shit!?

Hell, I even gave Manga itself a try after that. About halfway through the first book of iDentity, I came to a page that had two of the main characters in swimwear and had the title "GRATUITOUS FAN SERVICE PAGE!". Fuck it, I tried, it's just fucking awful.
OH ho ho, that must've been one hell of a Christmass. I hope you still have the family pictures.

Anime had really good shows and movies during the 90's, but at the start of the new millenium things went a little sour. I don't mind a bit of fanservice, because after all, TV shows like 24, Lost and Prison Break also have their "hot chick" moments. But the majority of anime today take it to an absurd level.
The last really good show I saw was School Rumble. A romantic screwball comedy where the main character is not some girly looking guy with delicate features, but a big bad rough tumbler with facial hair and sunglasses.

If you wanna see some good quality Japanese animation, watch Katsuhiro Otomo's Memories. One of the funkiest rides you ever have.

Umm, does Pokemon count as anime, because I used to watch it as a kid. Does that make me an anime fan?

I like some anime, only if there not filled with flash backs, terrible dialogue, horrible amounts of cliche's and filler episodes. I wouldn't call myself an anime fan though, there are only 5 I like.

I agree thats saying all gamers like anime is a bit of a stereotype. However it makes perfect sense to me.

Games are often a way of escaping into a fantasy world and doing things which arent possible in reality. Anime and manga also portray fantasy worlds which often have no bearing on reality. It isn't very difficult to see the reason why a lot of gamers like anime/mange when you look at it like that.

Okay so most animes have pretty crazy or insane storys. That is also why most people (including myself) like them. They arent all childish either but are often thought to be because they are visually similar to cartoons. I saw someone mention Black Lagoon which is very dark and mature (no 15 year old shonen protagonists here).

I'm not trying to force anyone to like it. However its not particularly fair to claim that all anime/manga is childish and cliched.

I realized this about 10 minutes ago. Thats why I made the tread.
I don't like it as a genre in itself but it would be unwise to ignore the best parts of it just because.

Watch Cowboy Bebop, Akira and Ghost in the Shell. For me those are the best of a bunch. Of course Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke too.
I saw the movie Akira. It is badass.
