I love anime and manga, though, by no means is all of it good. To be able to like it AT ALL, you have to be open to expirience other cultures, and really, open to cartoons in general...
If you want humour, I recommend Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Pt.1 is hilarious (while still being focussed on action). slthough Pt.2 not so much... still, If I were to sum up the entire series as a whole in 1 word, I would go with FUCKING EPIC. (and yes i know. that was intentional.)
the problem with a lot of anime and manga that I would expect a lot of escapists viewer to have a problem with is
A. Most of it is targetted to younger kids (why pretty much all shoenen protagonists are 15..)
-and to go allong with this, the afore mentioned DBZ syndrome
B. There are cleshayed jokes, and a lot of references that have to do with Japanese culture, which you have to know somehing about, to be able to get...
C. plot lines that are downright silly when compared to much of the more serious western culture entertainment.
However, Know that Anime encompasses a HUGE range of types and there IS a sub-genre much devoted to college-age males. look up Seinen.
The seires I would recomend that do'nt come off as convoluted or as silly as other but rather seem to go about things with a realistic/serious (yet entertaining) mannor are:
1: Death note
2: Code Geass
3: Black Lagoon
4: Elfen Lied
5: Hellsing/Hellsing Ultimate
-honorable mention: FullMetal Alchemist (Brotherhood)

as for the connection between gaming and anime, I dunno, the 2 sorta seem to go hand in hand to me *shrugs*
It's like gaming is actually a PART of anime culture...
I mean to like anime, you pretty much HAVE to be a "nerd" to begin with (or at least haave a nerd-like mindset) and Nerds like video games, that's just a scientific fact. =P
{although, it does'nt necessarily work the other way around...}
