In primary school, I tried to not show how into gaming I was, but now that I'm in high school with new friends, basically everyone knows that I love gaming and that I'm a nerd.

I play D&D, so yeah Imma nerd
I think this would be one of those activities that would make you a nerd no matter what else you did. As far As I'm concerned you cannot be a D&D player and not be a nerd.

That said, I don't think being a nerd should be considered exclusive. You can be a nerd and still have non-nerdy interests.

Simmilarly, you don't have to be a nerd to be a gamer. The two are associated because video games more or less originate in computers, which are considered nerdy. But consoles like the Wii, or to a lesser extent the 360 have made gaming more available to non-nerds. I think of the Escapist as first and foremost a gaming site, so it seems alright to me that non-nerds should be a part.

OT: I am a nerd. I was a nerd before I played video games. I was a nerd because I was engrossed in Medieval history, greek myhology, Star Wars(and to a lesser extent Star Trek), Lord of the Rings, and everything remtely like those two. I can tell the difference between deflectors and reflectors, I keep up on what crazy novels are still being tacked on to the end of the Star Wars mythos, Heck, I call it a mythos. I still haven't managed to pin down exactly what 'vorpal' is when used as an adjective for a weapon but I do know it means something along the lines of 'better than normal, probably kills faster', I write fantasy in my spare time, I read Manga. And then there's that most integral part of nerdiness; I debate these things on internet forums with people I have no intrest in ever meeting, and whose opinions I have no reason to care about or believe.

I am nerd. You'd hear me roar, but its on cooldown.

My little Cylon figurine calls me a nerd, I think I'll just go with him.

Not to be a nerd but videogames are quite an accepted social meidum, being on a site about them doesent qualify you as a nerd.
True, true, however, I think it also depends on the game. Just playing Halo, Modern Warfare 2 or GTA4 doesn't really make you a nerd, I agree with that. However, you've also got games like Planescape: Torment and Dwarven Fortress. Those are...less conventional, so to speak.

Let's put it this way; if I'm not in the nerd category then the world is seriously fucked up.
You can not have an apocalypse scale Warhammer 40k army, studing to become "Master of Science in Space Engineering" (love that title :p) and beeing an addict of caffiene and computers.

I don't consider myself a video game nerd, but definately a music nerd. But what is a nerd? Does that mean being into something. So if your into football your a football nerd? or if your into chess, your a chess nerd? I don't really think nerd has a negative connotation to it, IMO.

I think nerd is contextual. My main two hobbies outside of gaming are American Football and Go (read: like chess but Chinese and nerdier).

When I'm training on the football team I'm surrounded by +6' massive athletic people who would spend more time at the gym than the library, I feel very small at 5' 10" and very smart when the conversation doesn't get any more taxing than where we're going for a drink afterward. I guess that would qualify me as a nerd to most of them.

When I play Go I'm usually amoung IT professionals, students of quantum physics and just generally very intelligent people. Many times I've found myself completely lost in conversations because they're talking about things which I really don't understand. No one there would call me a nerd and I certainly don't feel like one.

I've always thought nerd, jock or any other stereotype is a subjective judgement bestowed by others, rather than a personal identity. At least for me it is, I guess there's nothing to stop someone identifying with their subjective judgement of themselves.

By my definition of nerd, I am a nerd.

My definition: People who have an great interest in certain cultural phenomenons that people who do not fall under the definition find harder to understand/enjoy. The bigger a nerd, the larger the amount of knowledge about the nerdy phenomenon.

I'm definately not as bad as some other people. I spend 5 hours per week max on video games, and I don't watch anime.

Nerds are everywhere. Look at our behaviour regarding what we like, and look at a group of frat boys watching football. Some appreciate, others go berserk. Do you ever grow beyond your obsession, or do you embrace it. We are all nerds, some of us just have better taste than others. Escapists ftw.
