I'm not really surprised at all. In fact, I wish other developers were more open about that sort of thing.
yes if you paid to make something, i am sure you would give it away.

And when i say paid, i mean put your company in jeopardy if product fails, if your game does not sell enough you got to make people jobless.
You didn't even read the rest of my post, did you?

Notch is the only developer that I know of who truly understands why people pirate. He understands that if an individual OUTSIDE of his target audience or market wants the game, then it is no revenue lost.

If I can't afford/can't access a game, then that means I won't be buying it. No profit for the developer. If I pirate the game, that also means I won't be buying it). No profit for the developer, but this time a potential consumer enjoys the developer's hard work, likely tells and shows his consumer-friends, posts about it on the internet, and may possibly enjoy the game enough that when it does become available for him, he'll go ahead and buy it.

This is what Notch is getting at. "If you're outside of my market and I won't profit from your experience either way, go ahead and pirate because I am proud of my work and want people to enjoy it," basically. This is an honest man who has created something wonderful, and he wants people to experience it for the sake of experience it. Hats off to you, Notch. You're a good man.

And in case some of you say "nay nay, you're a pirate trying to justify yourself," take a look at me steam. ~122 games. :D

Talking of copying/pirating didn't Skrillex say exactly this a few weeks ago?
Actually most musicians that music for the sake of making music say that they don't give a fuck about piracy as long as people are enjoying their music.

OT: And? I don't think he really cares since he's already swimming in money, a few tenners won't cost him a lot.

Notch is so edgy and hip. He's a forward thinker! He doesn't want to settle legal disputes with boring brief cases. He wants Quake! And now he's all "I don't care if you pirate that game that is falling out of fad status and anyone who will buy it has bought it". He is in no way trying to appeal to people who will buy his next game because it has his name on it rather than it being any good. Because small companies don't do that franchise and brand recognition shit at all.
He's so Keewwwwwwllll

I think Minecraft is a great concept. I think this guy hit big with a niche in the market that needed to be filled. I don't think he is some kind of hero or super genius. He does this shit because it's good publicity

Not every indie is as successful as Notch, and I'm willing to bet they depend on sales a lot more than Notch currently does. So when an indie as important as he is says that piracy is essentially OK, he's screwing the rest of field who are still in the "my entire diet consists of instant ramen" stage of game development.

Notch, stop encouraging bad behavior.

I don't have anything against what he's said, I just find it amusing that he seems to be copying someone's words about copying. He has quite a laid-back track record on piracy, and it's served him quite well.

I cannot afford Minecraft right now, luckily, I bought it at a time when I could. Notch seems like a pretty cool guy for saying this though. Now, to scrape together enough money to take the bus to work...

Brilliantly, that type of attitude is what prevents a lot of people pirating his games.

Well now I don't feel so bad... Not that I'm saying I pirated it. But if I ever play it again now that its actually been released, I'll pay for it.

No, Fuck you Notch. I will not support a world wherein if you can't afford it then you're encouraged to just take it anyways. That's not how a functional world works.

Please note that he didn't even make the game free. He just said pirate it. Why not just give it away instead of advocating illegal activity?
Is it really illegal if your given permission?

It's easy to be generous when you have more money than most third world countries, but it's still cool to see a developer who not only isn't super anti piracy, but also recognizes it as at very least a necessary evil with a legitimate purpose.

Not surprised at all, he has expressed views very much inline with this in the past. And he is spot on.

Reading that put a grin on my face. It makes sense he would want people to enjoy his game, and he is very anti-SOPA. He's going so far as to say "go ahead and steal my stuff" to state his stance on the matter. That both amazes and amuses me.

I still won't pirate it, though.
Oddly enough, people could still be nailed for "pirating" Minecraft under SOPA, so maybe this is just an ingenious plan....

It's a nice upbeat attitude for a change, but he should actually consider the price point.

As a $10 beta with promise of free updates it was great, love the game, as a $20 "full game" and new updates maybe... sorry but in what way is this worth 2x the starting price?
It has a great concept but the game does not have content worth that kind of money.

You're seriously against an artist's right to dictate terms of distribution for his work?

I might try it. Maybe my girlfriend might like it and we'll be able to play it together. At least not I have the go-ahead on pirating.

Not that I exactly needed one.

I'm not sure it is easy. Look at all those folks who ARE supporting SOPA or using crippling DRM or suing clients.

Well, sort of.

Though it's quite amusing and disheartening t see someone gets warned for saying they're going to do what was advocated by the guy behind the product.
