I over write the same save, a lot. Unless it's a game where the save screen is in the main menu, I will save before, entering, and upon exiting any Arena (Large area, lots of stuff).

I save after any major event. After any fight/quest. Just to make sure I never have to repeat it.

I save often, and in only one slot unless I think I missed something (but I usually check for missable stuff before I even start). For games where you can save anywhere, I save every 5-10 minutes. At predetermined save points I save, do maintenance if necessary/available (like upgrades/shopping in FF13) and then save again before continuing/quitting.

If there's quicksave, before I do anything remotely dangerous. I think Bethesda illustrates this perfectly... Before I open a door, before I enter a tomb/dungeon/anywhere. Before I pick pocket someone, a few seconds after I pickpocket and am sure no-one saw. Before I feed on someone. You get it. Pre-determined slave points I use every opportunity. Otherwise I just save when I'm about to turn it off, or did something big, or am just leaving it on for a bit while I do something, in case of freezing.

Yeah, something like this!

I have the best of intentions, but you know how it is. You get into a four hour session with no autosaves, and then when it all dies on you or you cock up, THEN you realise how long you've been playing without saving.

EDIT: Unless I'm using the Company of Heroes Worldbuilder. Then I save every four seconds. Damn thing is very adept at crashing.

In RPGs I tend to save when possible... if there's a savepoint, you better believe that I will save, because after a long journey and you see a savepoint that usually means there's a boss battle.

Now WRPGs like Baldur's gate, I usually spam the quicksave because I've been burned a lot too, both literally and metaphorically.

Other games, like say Pokemon, I'll only save after awhile because I realized that I haven't saved in a long time. I made the mistake of thinking I saved before turning it off, only to realize when I booted it back up I was missing a couple Pokemon... thankfully apart from the coins from that damn game none of the Pokemon were very rare.

I've started to get into the habit of doing multiple save files for different points, because I got stuck really badly in Persona 3 and realized that I only had 1 save, bad mistake, there goes 50+ hours down the tube because I made the mistake of not grinding out levels, so unless I can somehow pull a miracle out of my ass and beat the set fight, I am soooo effed.

I almost never keep multiple files unless it's a point in the game where I might want to do it over again. I never OCD over it and save over several times just to be safe. If my file gets corrupted, it's not because I didn't save enough times. I just say "crap" or a minor expletive, but I don't freak out (It is rather annoying if I was near the end-game of my days long RPG though)

If there are pre-determined save points, then I save once every time I see them. The exception is Resident Evil 4, where I do skip over some points since I know how long it will take me to reach the next one by now.

If I can save wherever, then it's every once in a decent while or whenever something important is about to happen/has happened. Somewhere between 20 and 30 hours into Mass Effect 1 (unfinished) and I have roughly 120-140 saves. I have to head to Virmire after I'm done sidequesting.

I try to save whenever I can but if there are no auto-saves to remind me, I forget. I don't particularly trust auto-save for some reason, and if I die and haven't saved in the last 10 minutes, I will literally stop playing the game. That's why I can never complete Elder Scrolls or Fallout.

The game I play most automatically saves my progress. i.e. Call of Duty 4 and its sequel, Half Life 2, Portal.

I have stopped playing games with SavePoints since I actually have a life.

If I am playing a Bethesda game, or Risen/Gothic I save every few minutes until I have 10 slots (Per character) and then I keep saving over them in order.

If I have a STURDY game then I save only when I am about to do something big. (FreeLancer, HardWar, etc)

I save when I get a chance. Not obsessive-compulsively though. I also keep a separate file for post game stuff, just in case.

I try to save atleast once every 10 minuites for most games, however I don't organise my save files very well, which can be dangerous if you have more than one character in a game like Fallout 3, I have accidentally saved over one of my other characters.. which is why I love the Dragon Age: Origins style of save organising, each characters save files are separated.

In the S.T.A.L.K.E.R games I actually bind quicksave to 'Q' so I can mash it if needed.

25,000+ saves in Oblivion tell you anything?

I save all the damn time. You never know what'll happen.
Same, sometimes i save a lot after every fight in games like Dragon Age just so if i die in the next bit i don't have to go through it again.
