hiya! new to the escapist.

Everyone has seen them: weapons scaled up to improbable proportions. "How the hell do you even carry such a thing, let alone swing/aim it!" Show us the most ludicrously sized, over-compensating deathbringers, be it melee or ranged, that you know of. (no WMD's please)
also, I used the searchbar... negative outcome.

My contribution:

Guts' Dragonslayer, Berserk franchise

At least Guts looks like he can actually use that damned thing.

Nightmare's version of the Souledge, Soul series

Also Siegfried, but showing that just feels redundant.

Giga Drill Breaker, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Please ignore that aweful rapping inbetween scenes
side note: those mecha are at LEAST 20 meter's tall, except Chouginga Gurren Lagann, which is rougly the size of the moon. Yes, the MOON. Also, the titular Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is several times our galaxy's width and, judging by it's way of movement, moves at several hundred times the speed of light. Dunno how that's supposed to be possible, then again, nothing makes sense in that show

Ryu Hayabusa's Dabilahro, Ninja Gaiden
couldn't find a nice picture =/

I'l leave the rest to you!

EDIT: -added some missing info on ttgl..

Firstly I'll just generalise my answer and say go look at a JRPG.
Alright, I found one from World of Warcraft.
Just look at those shoulders!

Secondly I'll say Welcome to the Escapist! I hope you enjoy your stay with us. Please ignore the body under the stairs and Doug, the troll outside. There some things you may want to look [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.116827] at [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.112832] before you continue to post.

I'm fairly certain those shoulders are just sexy.

I'm not actually sure it counts as a WMD or not... but the first thing that comes to mind is a ranged weapon, oddly enough, and it's 'Pandora' from Devil May Cry 4. Seriously, it's a huge metal suitcase which by itself looks pretty heavy... but then it's got the possibility of transforming (among other things) into a gyroscope-shaped rocket-launching gun platform! Probably one of the most absurd weapons I've ever seen.

That was ridiculous. Cool, but ridiculous

Both Cloud and sephiroth's sword from FF VII

Woah...
This.

How the hell does he carry that thing? It's bigger than he is and must weigh upwards of 200 pounds! The fact that he's even able to lift it up is impressive enough, but he's able to use it as if he were using a shortsword! This should not be physically possible!

I'm a novice comic book artist, and I'll admit; there are times where I've abused the oversized whachamacallits. There are times where, as an artist, you want to elicit a certain feeling of power, and ability. An oversized blade gives a sense of ability and power. Shoulders are for power, so enhanced shoulders give a feeling of confidence and power. It can and does go on, but the oversized weapons in art has a reason; to elicit an emotional response. :)

There are, however, some scenarios where it's very appropriate, and works well.

(not my art, unfortunately.)

And he's also toting it with those wussy, girly JRPG arms. No dice buddy.

I know the OP said no WMDs, but this must at least rate a mention...

Mako/SOLDIER engineering? That explaination worked well for me. :) The Mako/Jenova treatment gave SOLDIERS increadable strength. Not car hucking strength, but I think enough to justify a weapon like Clouds' and Sephiroths'. :)

To further my point here, look no further than Samas Arans' Varia Suit.
Ever see her downgraded suit with the flat pointy shoulder pad things? When given the choice, visually, people I've noticed favor the Varias' sexy and confident shoulders. Samas' visor shape (and here, angle) enhances the sense of determination, all mingling into a mixture of capable determination. Body language is the base of it, and the rest enhances these emotional responses. :)

Yachiru Kusajishi from Bleach. Her sword isn't necessarily the biggest, but... She's a tiny girl, her sword in on wheels..!

She would need to be beyond tiny for that sword to be big compared to her.

Her eyes are 1.5cm (approx) on the screen, and the sword is 13cm.

My eyes are 2.5cm (approx). Multiplying this by 8.66 to increase it to the same scale, the sword would be 21.65cm if I held it.

There's no way that chick is any taller than 40cms.

In closing, manga is stupid.

the Experimental MIRV or the eradicator hexapod are the worst non-JRPG (you know the games that are good?) weapons
I played only 1 jrpg (in which large weapons truly shone in their absence), so I'll consider your statement based on ignorance.

at least it's multi-purpose... like a giant Swiss army knife, but with guns and weird spinning blade arrangements. What more could there be in there?

haha! I'll let this one slip the net. Just too wonderful. Reminds me of Baron Münchhausen, riding a cannonball.
