When I was in High School, i was often called by the nickname Weasel or Mongoose, since i was 1 a fast runner and 2 i was the skinnniest and tallest guy in class. I was kind of the guy who was at the top of the PE class, always in the top runners, always in the guy who could bench and press the most, and a bunch of other stuff. But I always felt pity towards the people in back, the unathletic kids who were always a step behind. I actually got assigned to one of them as my partner (think Pvt. Joker and Pvt. Pyle), but unfortunately i wasn't able to convince him to turn around. I honestly wonder why people would do this to themselves. I don't necessarily hate fat people, i just wonder why people would become OBESE. What do you think?

I agree. Although I'm definitely NOT a stud who has a hundred pounds of muscle, I'm quite a decent weight for my height: 155 pounds at 6'2. I don't care much about if you're fat, I just fail to understand how you can allow it to happen. Laziness, I suppose.

It's a lazy sedentary lifestyle that causes it though personally I don't see how you let yourself go. Weightloss/maintainance is easy if you even just have a modicum of discipline.

Its the lifestyle that you grow accustomed to.

I was pretty Fat growing up, but I was never unathletic. One day I just decided to work out and lose wait to feel better about myself.

It takes a lot of hard work and will power that most people don't have. And others are just okay with not being supermodels.

Obesity is not as simple as reducing diet and getting exercise. There are multiple body types certain kinds of foods, slow and fast metabolism. And turning around is the hardest part. I myself am very bulky but I have good reflexes and am surprisingly agile because I am a certain body type. I got a gut but I can kick ass! ...just not run very far. And hell there were kids in my school who ate shit tons of food and never gained a pound.

Somewhat.

However I think the word "obesity" is tossed around a bit much. There's a difference between overweight and obese. So someone who could lose 20-30 pounds, sure, they're fine to me. 40 pound and up... it's just embarrassing. I have a crappy metabolism, and can't lose much weight no matter how hard I work, so I'm chronically about 15-20 pounds over. Keeping in mind I have a lot of muscle mass and am 6'3.5"... its not that bad. So if I can keep it reasonable, you should be able to as well.

Just to clear things up... Your thread title says obesity, but your post makes it sound like you are talking about people who are just overweight and/or unfit...
Which is it?

OT: Obesity is a problem, yes, but it doesn't bother me.
I'm about 188cm's, and weigh just under 70 kg's.
But I have plenty of friends (a couple of whom I'd name some of my Best friends) who are overweight. They're still great people, and I don't want to lose any of them as friends, least of all because of how much they weigh.

Be careful of your wording, btw. You're sounding a little biased against overweight people in general, and that doesn't end well around these parts. :p

What do I think? Sometime's it's medical, sometimes people just lead the wrong lifestyle.
Can't hurt to get fit, but remember you can be fit and "overweight". It is possible. :p
Sorry I can't add more to the topic than that, I haven't exactly fully read into it. o_O ...

Obesity is a choice that people have the right to make for themselves.

BUT that doesn't mean I have to be nice to them about it as I for one, find it disgusting both physically and mentally.

Side note, I'm skinny, but I don't eat much and I Run

Yes, it bothers me. Obesity itself, that is. As for how I feel about people that are obese... It depends on the person, and often how big they are.

Yes, I realize that my statement was quite shallow... Still. It's not healthy. Like alcoholism, and nicotine or opiate addiction, it is unhealthy and killing people. Unfortunately, unlike smoking or drug-use, it's looked down upon to scold people who overeat, or are obese. Why? It's just as bad, if not worse. Why is it socially acceptable to lecture a smoker, and not an obese over-eater?

Now, I realize myself that I am not a healthy person. I am close to being underweight, and I have poor abdominal muscle strength. My diet is not healthy either, as I take in very little green-plant-based food. So, I'm not the perfect person to lecture the obese on being healthier.

Because I'm lazy. That simple.
I am with you brother. Who wants to run around the city in spandex looking like a twat. Or lift weights only to put them back down again.
I have this thing against useless labour.
Spandex is dam sexy if you've got the body for it! And its not useless labor if it makes you live longer/happier.

I come from a long line of obese family members. I'm a bit rotund but I'm not obese. I thought it was bad on my side of the family until I met the families of my first two girlfriends.

I don't have a problem with overweight people. What I don't like is how they complain about how daunting normal daily activities are. I don't like how some of them complain about how they came to that condition, and yet they still ride a motorized cart because they are unable to walk.

The fact of the matter is it all boils down to lifestyle choice. Yes, people are genetically predestined to being overweight. But if you're so huge that your belly hangs down to your knees when you sit down, you have given yourself type 2 diabetes and have to shoot insulin because of your sedentary lifestyle, that's all your own damn fault. Genetics only go so far.

It's the same kind of deal with alcoholism. Yes, if your family history has a lot of alcoholics in it, then you may be more prone to it than others. But all in all, it's you who chooses to let that be the catalyst to becoming a problematic drinker.

Lack of proper diet growing up, lack of information, misinformation, general apathy, undiagnosed endocrine disorders that make it difficult to lose weight (and, thus, the individual becomes easily discouraged), unrealistic goals force upon a person by peers. A person can be obese for any number of reasons - not all of them being the person's fault.

A large part of childhood obesity lies on the parents. If Pa and Ma aren't teaching dear Johnny to get sixty minutes of exercise a day and cooking him healthy meals, how's he supposed to understand that stuff at a later age? The non-existent nutrition classes offered by his school? By the time the person's an adult they have a very large amount of work to do to get to a place they've never been.

Obese individuals cannot operate at the same level as you or I could. Their joints have far more pressure and asking someone who weighs quite a bit to, say, do the same exercise as yourself is more than likely going to hurt this overweight individual. Your partner's parents were likely just as much to blame for his issue as he was. He didn't just decide at age six to be fat and never exercise and eat a $0.99 cheeseburger.

Never mind the exercise and dieting industry making people feel like failures for not getting instant results. Have you ever walked down a diet isle at a grocery store? Ten day miracle cleanses! Meal replacement bars! Alli! Six week abs! Turn fat into muscle! Weeeee!

Even the non-commercial things lie. I bet even you, as a former athlete, have completely incorrect notions of some form of exercise or fitness. Women often have this notion that weightlifting will get them 'bulky' and, thus, they stick to cardio. You as a former athlete should know how difficult it is for a male to get bulked, never mind a woman.

Obesity bothers me because it's a completely preventable disease in most cases. There are people who have disorders. They will have to work a hundred times harder than you ever will while on medication to even maintain a healthy weight. It truly sucks to be them. However, the rest of us have no excuse beyond laziness.

[sub]Why yes I've been researching this topic what are you talking about.[/sub]

Edit: FORGOT GENETICS GOSH DANG IT. :I
