Ok, let me say this: The damn thing is int he fucking middle, default, medium. Are you seriously saying it needs to be lower in order to make the game easier to play?

You all seem to be missing the point, I'm not complaining about difficulty, I'm trying to ask people how do they manage to properly play the game without their character becoming too underpowered when compared to the enemies.
Well, logically your first point makes sense, it would be easier if you moved the slider down from default.

There's a guide [http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Character_Creation] on the UESPwiki for smart character creation and levelling. Give it a read.

I didn't have any problems at the medium difficulty and don't know why you are, but if you feel like your character is underpowered, tuning down the difficulty is the logical thing to do. There's no shame in making the game more enjoyable to play.

Don't fight multiple enemies at the same time.

Keep your distance from heavy hitters like trolls and ogres, use hammers, claymores and ranged spells. Summons are also useful for keeping enemy attacks off of you.

Ambush your enemies, Use poisoned arrows and sneak attacks when you get in your first hit.

Don't hoard magic weapons, use them when ever your enemies might be too strong. Magic weapons are fairly common and give you a good advantage.

Move around and run while in combat, you can often get into areas where your enemies can't do much damage to you.

When traveling always run and also when you see something interesting to jump on or off do it, it will make evading attacks easier.

If your enemies seem to powerful run away, its not that difficult and town guards can easily kill any enemy you can't.

Those trolls and ogres LIVE IN THAT CAVE. They will be there if you are a level 1. They will be there if you are a level 100.

I was a 15, and guess what? They were there.

Some enemies are just placed in some locations.

Oscuro's oblivion overhaul fixes everything and makes Oblivion exactly what I want it to be. Thank god for Oscuro.

honestly i don't know. I could not stand oblivion at all, i love rpg's but oblivion was just terrible! The constant exploits and glitches made it too hard for me to get into the game. Oblivion had a terrible combat system in my opinion that was absolutely boring and only fun when shooting fireballs at deer. The main storyline missions in oblivion were boring and almost pointless, you could go through the entire game without doing a single main mission and just do side missions and the worst part was that the side missions are more fun than the actual campaign.
Rpg's like diablo may have a boring combat system but they have a reason to play and that reason is to beat it. Playing oblivion is more of a chore than anything with its unrewarding storyline.

See... I LOVE Oblivion and the Elderscrolls series in general. I love the combat system, and its free roamness combined with its "realistic if fantasy were real" approach. I always approached the series as a sort of Fantasy-medieval rpg version of Grand Theft Auto.

Yes. That would be the purpose of a difficulty setting. If you want to play COD on an easy mode, you pick Rookie or whatever it has

That's exactly what I gave you.

Start it on hard, and progress to easy if you want to end up with an immortal badass by the end

Start on easy and progress to hard, if you want the game to continue to rise in challenge!

zehydra has the right idea

I forgot to mention get into the mages guild and enchant your armor with protect. If you use you stack up enough protect and armor so that your armor reaches 100 you become impervious to physical attacks.

Chameleon is stackable as well and getting 100 chameleon will give you invisibility

Don't listen to those other people about the difficulty settings, the reason the game is so hard for you is because your not changing your strategy to deal with harder enemies.

Do what I did in Morrowind.

Spend hours leveling up. I'm level 77, and things only started getting easy at about around level 50. Get up to that.

Turn down the difficulty for one. For two, you get staggered by enemies because you have very low agility. The higher your agility the less of a chance you get staggered.

I am a Lv 6 Theif class (bows, daggers, light armor,) and I can take out most creatures and bandits with little trouble.

I didn't think Oblivion was playable either. It could have been done so much better (See Fallout 3 for proof) but they just seemed to cut corners. The story wasn't as engaging, there was no more racial tension (or less of it) the characters were so stiff and 4 voice actors between an entire continent was laughable.

The way I managed to properly play the game... was by turning down the difficulty slider. I couldn't find any other way.

Borderlands has the same problem. Try and kill anything over 2 levels higher than you and you die.

Thank god Fallout 3 didn't have this problem.

starting with the thief birth sign is also helpful.

the +10 to speed and agility make it good, the +10 to luck makes it easily the best birth sign in the game

minotaur came out of nowhere and ambushed us. It wasn't a big problem, but what truly fucked me over is that all of a sudden out of nowhere a fucking unicorn came out. A UNICORN!!!!
the unicorn is always gaurded by 4 minotaurs with 100 aggro and the unicorn itself is leveled to be like 5 levels over you

now as for playing with out having an underpowered character it takes some research or a shit ton of playing there are some quests you don't want to do till lvl 30 because the reward is level dependent (Such as the entire dark brotherhood questline). I have a level 35 Khajiit and have no problem killing the leveled enemies, this is mainly because he is a master of sneak making combat very easy (while sneaking he ignores enemy armor rating and has increased damage) also mastering the armor you use at low levels helps later on, one of the first skills you should have at 100 is alchemy, this will let you create absurdly powerful potions, with 100 alchemy 60 int and 60 luk you can create a potion that restores 10 health a second for 30 seconds, very useful for leveling armor skills

to easily level you light/heavy armor skill i suggest fully completing the thieves guild questline this gives you the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal (which is a very useful item itself) wearing this makes you the gray fox so guards will flock to you give the arrest dialouge and your only option is to resist which will make every gaurd in that zone attack you so slide the difficulty down to -100 and you can easily get 80 levels into an armor skill (broken armor still raises the skill) with less then 20 of the restore potions i mentioned earlier after youve gained the levels you desire take off the cowl and yield to any of the guards and they all will stop attacking you and all you have to do is pay a 40 gold assault charge (the silly scripting counts the yield as an attack for whatever reason)

so with your armor of choice maxed at higher levels you will have a high armor rating so even with the slider in the middle (0) you won't take much damage and your encumbrance will be lower because your equipped armor no longer encumbers you

hope this helps

I played as a stealthy fuckbin who would hide behind any cover possible and snipe people to death with a bow. An arrow through the jugular seemed to resolve any problem encountered without fail.

Honestly i found no difficulty in the game at medium and never felt a need to change it... except when i got bored... i know spells and everything are great... but some of the best things to do is get:
Restoration: saves healing potions and has some sick healing spells that barely cost any mana.
Blades: they simply kick everything's ass...
some armor...: light or heavy, take your pick.
also, another important thing to note is that leveling up is not bad
ALL quests rewards (or nearly all) improve with being a higher level. the best staff i ever had did 99 thunder damage when i was about level 25ish and was about 50 mana cheaper than crafting my own... or something like that... its been too long.
Also important if you focus too much on quests they get progressively harder even if you don't get progresively stronger... at least the guild quests anyway. leveling up is not bad and the only time i got bored of the game is when i tried to create a class that got 15 stat ups for every level... fricken boring.
other than that... if all else fails you could make it easier... well good luck with whatever you choose to do.
