I play on PC with a bucketload of mods, including a monster multiplier mod, which basically means 1 rat=5 rats. I usually play at medium difficulty and the battles are challenging because there's so.damn.many.of.them; sometimes I tone it down because it gets ridiculous. I reeaally don't see why you should have any problems, seriously. Its a well known fact that Oblivion's leveling system is a bit dodgy anyway, hopefully Bethesda will improve upon it in TES5

I modded mine to be realistic.
I died from one hit
If I didnt block
I died.
I loved the game like that and I explored most of it with my cleric of awesomeness.
Two Handed Blunt Weapon, Heavy Armor, Heals.

I played Oblivion on the ps3 a year or so back. I kept it on medium difficulty the whole time. Never once had a problem I couldn't handle with a little strategy and thinking ahead. I really don't know what to tell you other than to train your minor skills like there was no tomorrow. For those persistent enough to do the training before randomly adventuring the country side(which seems to be where your problem came from, sorry to hear about the unicorn by the way) this game can be pretty easy.

The levelling issue sounds similiar to FFVIII. Isn't it an odd situation where you work hard to NOT level your characters and cringe every time they go up one?

yeah, the games pretty hogshit horrible on the 360. I own it on both the 360 and the PC, and I have to say, damn, I hate the 360 version.

If you want to know the best way to beat the game, is to get a suit of armor enchanted with Chameleon until you have 100% chameleon, and then nothing will ever see you, and you can just attack non-stop.

It breaks the game over its knee with a sickening crack.

on MY playthrough on the 360, I followed this guide to the letter:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/xbox360/file/927345/48756

I ended up at level 50 with 100 in each stat and 100 in almost every skill. but honestly, I wouldn't reccomend it. It takes WAAAAY too long, and is soul destroyingly boring.

If you want to get the best out of both worlds... just make sure that every level you get 10 raises in Endurance skills (Armorer, Heavy Armor, Block). and every level, put +5 points into Endurance. If you do that until you have 100 endurance, honestly, the rest doesn't really matter. You'll be have as much health as it is possible to have, so you should be able to stand up to any challenge that comes to you, no matter your level.

You may not have 100 stats in everything by the time you're done, but you should have 100 in your major stats you want to use and the ones you use often.

just get 100 endurance as fast as possible. As long as you do, you're fine.

I suggest playing it on the PC though, where you can completely forgo the shitty levelling system using mods.

EDIT: Oh, and if you want to be really tricky, abuse trainers. get 5 trains per level every level, and for high level skills, create a "Drain *Skill* Self 100 for 1 second" spell, cast it on yourself before talking to the trainer and get the training for almost free.

On that same note, learn a Boost Self Personality 100 1s - Charm 100 1s touch - boost self Mercantile 100 1s -- spell and use it before talking to anyone.

starting with the thief birth sign is also helpful.

the +10 to speed and agility make it good, the +10 to luck makes it easily the best birth sign in the game
luck is one of those skills that isn't useful unless you abuse it. I'd usually suggest the lady or warrior for most builds, just because of the bonus to endurance, or the mage/apprentice/astronach for mages, as Magicka levels are pretty set in stone by your intelligence.

Yeah I fuckin hate level scaling. Especially in new games like Da:Origins. I mean I want to be able to pwn the noob ass monsters and feel like I'm getting somewhere in a game. Anyway just turn the difficulty down.

You gotta level PROPERLY. Don't just raise ANY skill to level up. Level your offensive skills, so that you can hold your own with current enemies.

Just reading the OP, I immediately *facepalm* and resist the urge to say "Console Kiddie."

I am trying to fix my ways of hating on the consoles after growing up a PC-Gamer.. But the epic fail recently that is MW2 on PC pretty much sums this irritation up.

Had the same thing happened with Oblivion, I would have never liked the game ever. I played it "vanilla" for about 10 minutes and realized surely there had to be something better.. And if not, I could use the toolset myself. Thankfully, plenty of people fixed the leveling system, and Oscuro fixed the leveled creature issues. Apart from that I made my own tweaks on top of BT-mod for the UI and the game was freaking fantastic.

The level system can only really be fixed on the PC version with mods, which are different from "console mods" which just give unfair advantage, whereas a PC mod edits functions so as to enhance.

Anyway, that would be your best bet.

What? But the only reason to play any TES game is wandering about to see what's there. Unless you're there for the fantastic voice acting? You can never hear enough about mudcrabs. Of course, this was ruined in oblivion by the stupid tower in the imperial city. I'm sure it was meant to make the city look big and impressive, but since it's smaller than the village down the road from me in real life, it just make the entire map look tiny and uninteresting. And when I did get to somewhere interesting looking, the mountains outside Bruma, I was stopped by some fucking immersion destroying "Go back" before I was out of sight of the town.

that quest is really fucking hard in the fighters guild, it doesn't matter what level you are. Only challenging thing in the game though. HOW IS IT HARD?!? I admit between level 12 and 15 it seems the creatures are slightly hard to take down but at level 19 I could kill almost any creature in the game as my khajiit. and thats with a STEALTH character I could still go in and kick the crap out of anything, I was expert at blade and light armour by then. I usually hear how PISS EASY the game is made by the levelling system. by level 25 I had items to make my speed 100, along with my agility, strength and endurance. by level 28 I gave up because I could kill anything in like 3 hits.

This on normal difficulty. There is no way oblivion is hard. Though I have a PC so maybe the PS3 is just lame.
