Well, my opinion is that Oblivion is better. But it's by default as I've not played Morrowind. In some previous threads, this would mean my opinion wouldn't count. But hey, Oblivion introduced me to The Elder Scrolls series, and that's not a bad thing. Bring on number V! Hopefully it appeases both fans of Oblivion AND Morrowind.

We weren't attacking you for liking Oblivion better, we simply pointed out that the compass isn't necessary if you spend the time reading the journal and looking at the map.
That's the main thing I didn't like about Morrowind, it was like to get to where you want to go walk east for 136 steps, turn north west walk 72 steps, then turn south south west until you get to the troll cave, then head towards the north star until sunrise. I loved Oblivion's go here system. I can't tell you how long I looked for that damn dwemer cube in Morrowind.

Hey elderscrolls 3 wasnt the best anyway, i enjoyed 2 alot more (minus the bugs, so buggy)... I still have that old computer around somewhere (thinks about going into the shed to find it)
I would LOVE a remake of that. Then it would topple Morrowind.

I found Oblivion miles better than Morrowind. Morrowind's combat was really, REALLY bad. I just couldn't enjoy it personally.

A LOT of the opinions over Morrowind are dripping with nostalgia. I played Morrowind back when it was released, then Oblivion. And, being immune to nostalgia, found Oblivion MUCH better in almost every way.

Both are great games, but I prefer Morrowind. It just had the more open world feel (and you could levitate). The sense of exploration was taken away with the fast travel thingy, in my opinion. When walking around the Vvardenfell countryside I found myself loosing my track to venture into Deadra Shrines, Ancestral Tombs and caves, but in Oblivion I couldn't care less about those Ayleid things and generic caves.

Also, Vvardenfell was way more varied in its terrain than Cyrodiil. The Ashlands were pretty boring, though... Blighted cliff racer anyone?

EDIT: The Morrowind combat system is some of the worst I've encountered. That's about the worst I can say about the game.

I happen to disagree with you, but why should I care what you think? On that note, why should I think that my opinion should even matter to you?

It's not a full game, it's a mod, but there is an Oblivion mod called Morroblivion that adds Balmora to your map. Sadly, it doesn't bring back any of the features that Morrowind did better.

I've played both (oblivion first) and they are both amazing games. However both have flaws and strengths that are completely different ie. magic, hated the chance to cast thing in morrowind but loved the massive variety of spells and stuff to keep it interesting long after oblivions grew boring and i changed character.

A combination of Oblivion and Morrowind would be the best game ever
Thank you. Ofcourse, hopefully next year when TESV comes out, it will be like that, however Oblivion SHOULD have been that already. You are supposed to only remove the bad and add more good furtehr in the series. Oblivion is better for combat because its nice to be able to hit them when you hit them instead of it magically going through and they are fine, but it is also nice to have all this extra stuff to add to the fun. There was no reason to remove spears and individual armor pieces. There WAS a reason to remove some spells, but they need to bring them back, levitation is why I liked Alteration almost as much as Illusion, and Mark and Recall are just usefull spells.
I would like to say that I share your optimism of TESV but i have a horrible feeling it will be an oblivion clone with bits of fallout 3 thrown in (why change a winning formula), still, it's not like I won't buy it...
The last time people doubted Bethesda, Arena was made. Bethesda is a company I trust to do good on, though not as much as BioWare, it is still better than many others.

I like both games. The only gripe I have with Morrowind is that the movement could be just a little quicker. At times it feels like you're walking for ages. Otherwise I only see Oblivion as Morrowind's child. It's called progression, remember?

While each had their perfection and their flaws, I definately fall on the Morrowind side of the fence.

The things Oblivion did right:

- Improved combat (but pales against the Dark Messiah combat implementation)

- Beautiful graphics (but Morrowind was equally beautiful on its release). The first time I walked into one of those elven ruins I was blown away.

The things Oblivion did wrong:

- Auto-leveling destroyed the sense of accomplishment of developing the character and created the bizarre incentive to remain as low level as possible. You also never got the rush of breaking into a place that was meant for a higher level and trying to work out how to survive long enough to get the good stuff. This was the clincher that killed Oblivion for me.

- Homogeneity of locations. The first time you see each of the location types, it's awesome. The tenth time, it's not so great. Eveything in Morrowind was hand-crafted, down to the placement of each shrub. The developers made a trade-off, improved visual quality and textures take time, and hand-crafting everything would have been very expensive. So they used a lego system.

Fundamenatlly, Morrowind captured the essense of a fantasy RPG for me. From the first moment of emerging from the boat to see the travelling creature in the mist, to the extrodinary Telvanni wizard city...it made my imagination soar. I felt like I just landed in one of my favourite novels.

Oblivion gave me that same sense (though not as strong) for about two days. Then I lost it. Everywhere was the same (more or less). There was less of thrill to explore. And the Oblivion plane seemed very weak visually to me compared to what it should have been.

I thought Morrowind was a better-written world: it was more unique and had interesting characters that lived there. Oblivion's setting was just so generic fantasy that it got dull in that regard. Instead of a looming mushroom tower, I had... a house. Instead of Telvanni madmen I had... well, nobody. Boo.

Here's the but: Oblivion played better. In particular, no amount of immersion will make me miss walking back out to the goddamned Ashlander camp from Morrowind. Nothing anyone says will make me want Cliff Racers back in the game (I actually use the screen name "a cliff racer" in FPS's as a homage to their awfulness: "you were beat down by a cliff racer/sniped by a cliff racer/assassinated by a cliff racer"), and the improved magic and combat system were hands-down better.

Which one you prefer probably depends on which criteria is more important:
- Gameplay
- World/Setting/Story.

If the former, you'll prefer Oblivion. The latter, and you'll prefer Morrowind. I'm in the former group, and like you, I prefer Oblivion. Rock on.

Having played (and LOVED) Oblivion but not having ever played Morrowind, I feel unworthy of making too much of a comment, but there was one thing I saw that I could discuss.

Unless you have some confirmation of a 2010 release date for ES V that I somehow did not hear about, then I have some bad news for you. Fallout 3 just came out within a matter of months ago, and they're still working away at DLC for it. If Bethesda has even started to think about ES V it would be only in the earliest stages, and considering the length of time between each Elder Scrolls game (this one on 360/PS3, the last on Xbox, the previous one released before that gen of consoles iirc), I'm not expecting a new ES game until the PS4/Xbox Next.

Optimistically maybe they'd be working on something new between now and then, but who's to say at this point. I wouldn't hold my breath.

I liked Oblivion a lot more as well. There was some aspects of morrowind I would of liked to see in Oblivion, mostly the spell and enchanting system. Oblivion seemed more of a living world to me with the way NPCs acted like they had their own lives rather then be stationary 24/7 waiting for you to talk to them or kill them.

From a main story perspective even tho oblivions was a lot weaker then morrowinds, I liked oblivions a lot more as I don't like playing evil if I can avoid it, morrowinds storyline had you doing everything from murder to sex slavery with no ways around it other then just not doing the main story

As far as leveled mobs go, while I see how people don't like it, it was much better then morrowinds system of having almost everything be level 10 so that when you got to 20 you were a demi-god capable of destroying everything in the game with ease while also having enough money to reach the cap just from buying training skills.

Morrowinds only challenge came from finding things, things that would blend into the background making it easy to overlook. As someone else mentioned the dwemer cube, a very low level quest, me and a friend spent a good 3 days searching every part of that dungeon looking for that stupid thing only to find it close to the entrance. I guess if you like easter egg hunt style gameplay you would like morrowind more

Screw them.

Oblivion w/ Oblivion Overhaul and Deadly Reflex mod(not to mention countless others) make it a DAMN fine game.

Morrowind is a better Vanilla game, whereas Oblivion is better when it's a completely different game.

Hence, Morrowind wins, but Oblivions the real winner.

I am not going based soley on me thinking it will just be out next year. No, it is not solid fact and could easily turn out not true. However they did mention it likely coming out late in 2010, but either I imagined reading that, or due to the scope of the game would take them much longer. (Id rather they take longer than remove even more stuff) Also it would fit their release pattern of 4 years. TES 2 is the only one out of place but if it was released two years later would fit. (Arena: 1994, Daggerfall: 1996, Morrowind: 2002, Oblivion:2006, and if fitting the pattern, TES V:2010)
Doubt me if you want to, you would not be wrong for it, but I still will go on thinking it will be 2010 until they say otherwise, or if nothing happens and it is Jan 1, 2011.

I don't remember if I posted in here or not but, Oblivion is better for me, as a person who played Oblvion first and then trying Morrowind, Morrowind sucked, couldn't play for more then an hour.

I wasn't sarcastic. I preferred a more intricate plot and huger game world than a prettier game with usable mixed classes.
