Oblivion on Sale vs. Skyrim Later

Minor quandary here. Oblivion is $5 on Steam and I'm wondering whether or not it is worth acquiring, or if I would be better off waiting for Skyrim to go down in price (I can wait years). Now, I did try the game on console and it really didn't do anything for me. Everyone looked like they had been beaten with shovels; The HUD looked like something straight from the late 90s; and I just didn't find the whole experience to be particularly engaging. However, I have read time and again that the inclusion of mods enhances the experience significantly.

More directly:

- Is Oblivion still worth playing now that people have experienced Skyrim?
- If so, what are the best mods available, particularly as it concerns the aesthetics of the game?

Edit: All right, went ahead and got it. Thanks for all of the informative replies!

I got it again, as I wait for Christmas. (Had it on Xbox before it broke.) Its worth it, helps understand the Lore. As for mods, im not quite sure as i only just got round to modding fallout.. but worth it. Really worth it.

Gah, I'm jealous. Considering how I'm not much of a wRPG person, I regret not waiting until a deal like this. I paid $20 for Oblivion and I would have rather paid five.

I don't have much of an answer other than $5 isn't much money. And from the sound of it, Skyrim isn't much of an improvement over Oblivion.

Yeah, $5 is a good deal, but I'm really conservative with my spending. I don't want to pay any money for something that won't offer me any enjoyment. I know it's a shallow complaint, but the big thing for me is really the aesthetics. Unless someone can point me to a really good cosmetic mod, then I probably won't bother.

It's worth it, especially for 5 bucks.

Having played Skyrim, I can say the missions in Oblivion still hold up well. I also don't mind the dungeons as much as everyone else does (I mean, in Skyrim and Morrowind both, were there ever that many different colors of soil for a cave?)

And I definitely like the verdant green as much as I do the mostly white/yellowish green.

Get it on steam for $5 and take advantage of all the mods, there are many that improve the NPC's looks. and just about any weapon or armor has been added to the game. theres a few HUD mods too if you dont care for the vannila version. $5 for a good game and more free content than you can shake a stick at is worth it. by the time Skyrim goes down in price most of the worst bugs will be patched and what Beth doesnt modders will. you could get the full package with all the DLC for next to nothing. and there will be plenty of good mods available.

This is very interesting. Does it play well with other mods (i.e. texture mods, character creation mods, etc.)?

Eh, I'd wait for Skyrim or put that money towards Morrowind. The game play isn't engaging, the enviroment design is bland, the voice acting is awful, the character models can't be saved by modding and the writing is pretty B grade. There's some fun to be had if you get Shivering Isles, and there are a few mods worth playing but in general? Not worth it.

Have you tried the Nehrim mod? Someone mentioned it above and it actually looks interesting.

Not sure, but I remember reading it does not do well with other mods. Like, at all. But you would have to take a look at the SureAI forums to get a real answer.

(Its worth mentioning that Nehrim comes with a shit load of mods already in the game to begin with, character creation, for example, has more options, hairstyles and the likes.)
Well, that works. I'm really thinking I might get it now. Nehrim looks great, especially with the German voice acting.

And based on what I read, I can still install other mods for Oblivion, they just won't work in Nehrim, since the two are essentially separate entities.

Get the GOTY Deluxe edition for $6.24. It includes all the DLC and is the only way to get it. This was also on sale a few weeks ago, I bought it even though I own it on 360, PS3 and on PC DVD. The Steam version just allows me to play without putting the DVD in.

That is crazy talk! Skyrim is leaps and bounds above Oblivion.
Yes, if you like Perks over Attributes, not every one does.
