Obsidian's doing a Kickstarter, what are your thoughts?

I have mixed feelings mostly positive. The only thing I am a little doubtfull about is the whole isometric viewpoint thing. I am not a huge fan of it but I can get over it because, well this is Obsidian we are talking about. I am getting Planescape: Torment right now to prepare. To bad it is going to take forever to release. 2 whole years. How will I wait?!
Edit: whoops why did I hold shidt when I pressed 2?

It's not that much. More like ! and a half years. :p Well, before the postponing, that is.

Oh, and the project has $469,968 at the time of writing. Not bad, I'd say. And by the time I finished this message, it received another 2k (I also updated the sum before I hit "Post").

Obsidian needs to iron out its management issues before it sees a dime from me. They can't keep to a schedule and their bug testing sucks balls.

I don't want to be a party pooper, but I feel like there should be at least a little skepticism. If there's one thing Obsidian are known for, it's making great games out of other peoples engines. They mention they're paying homage to the Infinity Engine, but the rest of the details makes it sound like they're going to be building this from scratch. No real clues from the video. Isn't there a question of whether they have the expertise to really do that? Most of their past titles from which they draw their credibility owe much to other developers like Bioware, Valve, Bethesda etc.

Every time someone says that, a child dies. Every single one of the common complaints levelled against the company are from draconian publishers fucking them up the ass.

Atari: Ludicrously Strict Deadlines

Bethesda: Promised to PA test on New Vegas, didn't

Sega: Rushed AP out before it was finished

Dungeon Siege 3 suffered none of this bull, and was released stable and finished.

See, there's one common element in all of this: Obsidian.

Other development studios who work under Lucas Arts, Atari, Bethesda and Sega can all keep to a schedule and release a finished product in time. Okay, maybe not so much Bethesda but still.

In the case of AP, if you didn't already know, it wasn't doomed because of deadlines. It was because of incompetent management with screwed up priorities.

Going from publisher to publisher and using the exact same excuse, I think they wore out their trust.

Ok, if you want to dismiss them based on that, that's fine. It's silly and kind of a shame, but that's not a problem.

I really do like the idea of developers making a game just because they want to make a really good game. Although I haven't actually played many of their games, so I can't really say whether I think it'll be successful. But I'll go by what everyone else says and assume it'll be great. Hur hur hur.
But does anyone know if it's going to be PC exclusive? I don't want to pay for a game I can't play.

Hmm, good question. The information released so far seems really light on actual...information. Other than what the game is going to be about. It doesn't say anywhere, so it might be that it's not decided for sure yet. And Obsidian's official Project Eternity page [http://eternity.obsidian.net/] is remarkably unhelpful. Seems it is broken.

This is basically my dream team making my dream game, there's no way I'm not backing this project. Seriously, the only way they could make this any more of my dream project is if they managed to rope Brian Mitsoda, who did the dialogue for Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, in as well but he's already off doing his own thing.

Damn. This is the project I've been waiting for on Kickstarter.

As soon as they said isometric view with tactical combat I might have cried in joy a little... just a little!

in all fairness they haven't said much about the game itself, so im going to remain skeptical about it, i don't like company's trying to ride nearly solely on their past success's while giving us very vague details at best, to the point you have a picture in the middle of your add saying look here guys, you like these games, this will be just as awesome as all of them WE PROMISE now pay us money.

im not secretly exited, HONEST.

When it's an established and professional studio doing it in order to try and produce their dream game without the interference of publishers... yes actually, I do love it. No sarcasm at all. I think it's great that a lot of these studio are being given the chance to do something they enjoy for the niche audience that will most appreciate it.

See Doublefine or Uber Entertainment and their kickstarters.

It's when it's some small indie group that has no verifiable experience or even anything to show but some neat ideas that make me nervous. True they might have the most to gain from a Kickstarter as opposed to a larger established studio, but they've also got absolutely nothing to lose either if they cut and run. For a studio like Doublefine or Obsidian that's not even an option.

Well, what DO you expect them to tell us? If they don't get the funding, they don't get to make the game. If they get the funding, they make a game that is super in line with their past successes. The games we like and that they made. I think that's all relevant information - they aren't making an RTS all of a sudden - in that case citing the previous RPGs is meaningless. But they are saying that they will be making a game like those they are known to be fond of and capable of doing. Nothing short of actual scrying through time can give you a way more reliable information. They can cite features all they want, it's still not any indication for the future success, if we follow up your way of thinking.
