I've got ammusing situations mostly cause I am gay. Canada just has the occasional retard.

One lunch-hour we were arguing about nature vs. nurture in relation to homosexuality. It stayed on topic for all of 5 seconds before one chick made it into choice vs. nature while the rest of us were trying to say it was both nature and nurture and this was related to someone's assignment. So her argument fails as it is totally obvious no one will willingly choose a hard life and she exclaims, "Gay people are stupid!" Three get seriously pissed off and two of us chucked food (both of us have gay relatives and I didn't know I was then).

My brilliant English and Theory of Knowledge teacher was talking to her regular Grade 12 class about homosexual rights around the world. One of my classmates heard two of the regular 12's talk about how they couldn't believe she actually cared about that.

More hilarity to ensue as there's a good few fundies in my ToK class and I have a presentation on the Anti-Homosexuality Bill in Uganda due like tomorrow ^-^

Also, next person who mixes up any term such as drag queen, transvestite, transgender, pansexual, or bisexual by either using them wrong or just being an ignorant dick is gonna get a lecture.
I just want to ask, how do you not know if your gay? I'm not making fun of you, I just honestly wounder.

God, the stupidity of Illinois, where to start. all of the other males in the school are obsessed with sports and all of the females are shallow and pretty stupid, you should have seen when we talked about the middle east in social studies. most of the African Americans are walking stereotypes and almost everyone is a homophone or a racist. you can't go 2 feet without hearing some kind of racial slur. I hate it here.
Easy, actually. I never had sexual attraction for men and once sex started to matter to me I realized I am sexually attracted to females. If one doesn't care about sex, they generally don't bother to figure out what they do find sexually attracting. In my experience, sexual orientation is not hard to figure out unless you deny it. In short, if you're horny for it, you better be including it in your sexual orientation.

Saskatchewan is racist towards natives so majorly. It does have the second largest % of native population of any province/territory (I think Nunavut is the highest). At least eventually over half the province will be native. Take that old people!

OK....

[small]I work in IT support, so these moments are common. In a 16+ college, no less, so a lot of the moments are from senior staff who teach reasonably complex subjects and Should Know Better. The facepalm comes close to drawing blood when you've had too much coffee and therefore have an all too clear recognition that these people have managed to get out of bed, and travel across town to do their job, whilst also clean, clothed and fed without help of a carer, and will do the same in reverse in the evening, including operating a cooker and the telly...

But they still can't turn on a powerpoint projector with the equivalent of a stick, an ass-finding radar, and a large-print sheet entitled "how to find your own ass" attached to the relevant item by a bit of string. Or in the case of one lovely lady who never ceases to amaze, still-can't insert a DVD into the computer and play it without inexplicably switching the whole system over to the entirely seperate set-top-style DVD player and fruitlessly mashing buttons on its remote. What I want to know is how she made the disc (or any of her powerpoints) in the first place, as it wasn't a commercial one... Major hand-eye-brain communication disconnect somewhere, I'm in awe of how you can get things so wrong when the correct method is both a heck of a lot easier AND spelled out for you. Obviously missed her calling - should have gone into local government instead and found a happy niche putting traffic lights on roundabouts that should have been built as grade seperated junctions in the first place, if the previous postholder hadn't blown all the earthworks and concrete money on signalised gyratories.

(The "correct" method being either... turn on the dvd player and eject the tray, as you would one at home. insert disc and close tray, as you would with a normal one. turn the projector (ie the "tv") to dvd channel, and away you go. As you would. Simply in this case the "tv" is 80 inches across. OR, if you're already using the PC... eject dvd tray. insert disc and close it. wait 10 seconds. press "OK" when it asks if you want to play the disc. sit back and watch. What's so hard?! If that's beyond you for god's sake don't try using a microwave or crossing a road.)

Mind you working in frontline education does seem to take it out of people mentally, and it's easy to mock when you're working instead in the equivalent position of the guy who flies a Hercules on supply runs over friendly territory and occasionally patches up a blood-splattered assault rifle whilst at the base camp, which jammed when the panicked ex-owner did something dippy with the safety catch.

On the flipside of that, the OP's description is (sadly) just highschool kids being exactly that. It was pretty much that way when I was in a similar classroom 12-ish years ago. The thickest ones also tend to have the most confidence (as they have no concept of their own shortcomings, but plenty of that of other people's; it's similar for the real semi-savant brainboxes, but they tend to sacrifice the necessary charisma that is the thickie's saving grace and true power), and the loudest opinions, so they become the natural ringleaders, regardless of how accurate the stuff coming out of their mouth is. Everyone else except for one or two "er, what?" dissenters go along out of peer pressure - either the ringleader's mates, or wanting to be in that circle, or to just avoid being beaten up by them. They don't actually know or even care what the truth is or which is the "right" side.

Luckily most will grow out of it, or at least, without that critical condensation nucleii, will not feel confident enough to speak up and cause trouble, and can go on to be productive and even advanced members of society. The former ringleaders soon find adult life outstrips the abilities that served them well in the cosseted school environment, and descend instead into various positions where they can't do much harm, though sadly this isn't _always_ the case (and "not much" is far from being "no" harm, but I'm talking on a national level). Or they too can evolve, have a moment of "wow, i'm being a twat" and grow into more balanced individuals. I occasionally had it bad just for being a bit geeky and inconfident, an obvious target (no need to be gay... particularly in a boys school). But as the perps stopped being kids, many of them lost the taste for it, some actually became friends in a wierd way, and a couple even came out.

It could happen, but I'd be jiggered if it does. Humans, by default, have a very annoying tendency to forget what happens in the past entirely too quickly, especially if it involves a severe fuck up. And at any rate, in case it DID happen, humans, by default, are indiscriminate discriminators, and any new tendency that spawns from here to 50 years is bound to be discriminated as well.

It is sad.

He insisted that homophobia should be a crime?
Actually I believe in the 50's if you were caught being (or) having a homosexual act with another person, both of you were immediately thrown into a mental asylum.

Also, keep in mind that people aren't stupid for having opinions. People are stupid if they take a social stand and can't defend their position logically.

EDIT: I feel like I need to provide an example. A friend of mine is anti-gay marriage. His stance is the adoption issue that comes up and that a child should grow up with parents that provide both a male and female influence. I disagree with him, but I can see his logic. It's the people that basically argue "WHRRGARBL! NO GAYS IN MAH KUNNTREE!" or "LBRAGRRHW! U INNTOHLERUNT NATZEE!" that are stupid on this one.
This is probably the closest to the truth your going to get. It's alright to have A different opinion, but if their only arguement is its wrong then it's not a thought out opinion its just bile picked up by an idiot who got it from an idiot who may have actually got it from someone who can back up their claim.

Kid phones up the support line I work for the conversation went like this

KID: The analogue stick on my control pad wasn't responding so I opened it up to see if I could fix it. Now I can't get it back together. I've only had my console 6 months, can you send me a new controller?
ME (having face palmed): So you opened up the controller?
KID: Yes
ME: You do realise by opening the controller you have invalidated your warranty & I can't do anything for you?
KID: I forgot, I actually dropped the controller & it broke open!
ME(face palm again): see... that also invalidates your warranty. the warranty doesn't cover accidental damage.
KID: But it wasn't my fault can't you just pretend I didnt open it & replace it?
ME: These calls are recorded & we would need to get the controller collected for inspection

Line goes dead!

EDIT: I did feel sorry for him & his stupidity but "rulez iz rulez"

I use the Hitler/Nazism thing myself whenever I can, which is worryingly often since most of the guys I know seem to be quite rascist. Nothing says "fun times" like mentioning that there was a German party around year 1940 who had some similar views and seeing them slowly make the association...

More on-topic: I'm sure that I've had similar experiences, but I can't for the life of me remember any of them. Well, except for the rascist thoughts some of the people I know keep on saying, with gems such as "those darn immigrants, destroying my moped. We should make them all go home!", as if all immigrants went as a whole big group and decided that they were going to tip his moped over.
What really bothers me, is how people take offense to my friends and i making (obviously) meta-jokes and jokes making fun of stereotypes about racism, and then in the next breath will agree with another making fun of homophobia. But not realizing that its making fun of homophobia.

I've honestly yet to meet one person I could truly consider intelligent that believed homosexuality is wrong.

Well you know that almost every single person who goes to a public school would rather not be there so the chances of them having an intelligent conversation about a topic such as homophobia is very slim. It's the same reason all the kids in my history class chuckle whenever we're watching a video on art and there are nude sculptures or paintings.

I hadn't realized that anti-gay sentiment was actually that strong in England. I guess it's one of those misconceptions that I have as an American liberal, to imagine England and other western European countries to be far more progressive than my own. I mean, I live in Oklahoma, which is right in the bible belt, the focal point of conservativism here in America. Hell, we were the only state in which not even a single district went for Obama during the last election. But I rarely ever saw anti-gay sentiment expressed like that in school.

Anyways, as for undefinable stupiditiy. Well, when I was taking World History our teacher was going over Oligarchy (the form of government) with us, and this kid who sat a couple of chairs in front of me just suddenly bursts out "Oligarchy! Is that where they got Olive Garden from?!" I guess the similarity of the words "Oligarchy" and "Olive Garden" had been too overpowering for his mind. Then again, this was the same kid who once ate Miracle Grow to see if it'd make him grow any faster. Needless to say, he wasn't exactly the brightest light in the outhouse.
You'd be surprised if you went to the same school I go to, man. Some of the teachers/students in my district of Oklahoma are rather against homosexuals and their marriage/adoption rights. I've gotten in to many a fight in school over that. As for the whole bible thing, I've got to totally agree with you; only a select handful of my school isn't Catholic/Christian, me being one of them (though majority is made up of Atheists and I'm Buddhist).

As for the sheer stupidity of people I've met, there was this one time in the middle of class where this senior was talking about how Bill Clinton had heart disease or something like that and had said that sources had reported he might die; this other senior (who has her on and off days, really, but still), after hearing that, questioned, "Really? When's he gonna die?"

I just kind of facepalm'd at that, but that's my own personal opinion I suppose.

i had to laugh once. In highschool i was branded a lesbian (long story cut short my words had been twisted during an argument with another girl, involved a medical problem that causes me to stare into space, which i had no control over but i was staring towards her and she thought it was because i was a lesbian). Any way, this other girl used it against me for 3 years. Only last week did i suddenly remember that one of her mates was openly Bisexual and frequently had girlfriends and boyfriends, yet it was me who got called a "dyke" and crap like that (oh, could someone please explain where that term came from in relation to lesbian...) It makes me laugh to think she picked on me but not her mate, then agian, the girl could probably beat her up coz she fairly strong.

Seriously though, how stupid or evil can you get, picking on someone (who wasn't even a lesbian) but one of your mates is messing with both sexes... I mean, WTF?
Want me to make it simple? There. I put it in bold for you. The other girl didn't like you and wanted a reason to take the piss out of you and make everyone else look down on you.
But yeah. Dyke. It comes from a French word, dike, which means mens clothing. Old word, not sure if it's still used. Anyway, this word was used in the UK to describe women who wore mens clothing 300 or so years ago. Evolved to mean masculine women, then butch lesbians, then just lesbians.

Western Europeans don't give a fuck about sexuality, that much is true. Britain is more proper though. The national tendancy is to be uncomfortable with change and, as such, people who are different. I'm a bisexual, I didn't yell from the rooftops but I never made any attempts to hide it. But then, when I was 14, I fell very much in love with a guy. He was a little older so wasn't at school and, as such, I was the only non-straight person there. I told a girl who wouldn't stop hitting on me, she told everyone else. I lost friends I'd known since my first day of school, I was socially outcast and bullied. My males friends still liked me and would stick up for me when I was being bullied, but they didn't feel comfortable around me. The girl I knew wanted to be my best friend in an "OMG I LOVE your SHOES" kind of way which isn't me, so they gave up on me too.
I battled my way through high school, made a couple of friends, went to college, made a couple more. Then he broke up with me and I was back on the dating scene. People from my high school had painted me with a reputation of being gay so I couldn't get dates. I was looking for girls you see, only went out with my ex because I loved him. I did shake it off eventually. I had to explain to one girl everything that happened up until now before we went out so she knew I wouldn't try and fuck her brother or something. So, yeah. I live in a liberal place too, my MP (representative) is a Liberal and so are all the neighbouring towns. Meh.

Don't you start. My patience gets thinner daily.

Anyway; it does really. Discrimination out of culture, you could argue being gay is a culture. Even so its the persecution of something different. So it is very similar to racism.

That's not uncommon. People fear rejection because of their sexuality so they cover it up by acting homophobic so people don't suspect they may be gay/bi/whatever. Classic deflection.
"The lady(?) doth protest too much, methinks."
Oddly enough, I had an intelligent conversation with somebody about Hamlet, and then he asked me why Ophelia went nuts and drowned herself, rather than just getting over it. I, jokingly, of course, said 'Why don't you go and ask Shakespeare?' and this poor boy looked at me and said, 'He's still alive?'

I wept.
