Right hello. Yeah. I was in my English lesson today. It was pretty laid back and due to an earlier incident The topic of Racism and homophobia was brought up. The person sitting in front of me went? Homophobia? what's that. (it gets worse) I explained somewhat shocked he didn't know that. Then he preceded to insist it was "wrong" and should be a crime (homosexuality). Of course that bugged me (not gay) so I went to defend against this complete buffoon. My reward? The entire 30 person class of supposed intellectuals yelling me down because I support gay rights. I mean what? They were saying things like "Yeah well I don't want that up there" supposedly assuming every gay person is a rapist. And that it's a choice. A choice? I mean what?

So as for discussion. Can you share similar moments when you are over come by a wave of undefinable levels of stupidity by one of even a group of people?

I'm English and in a rather "normal" area
Never had that. (i'm english as well, area was 'okay', ie sandwiched between 1 nice area and 3 shitty ones) sure in 7-11 homophobia was rife, especially with it being an all boys school, though strangely even that stopped when we got to six form.
though outside of school i did know some spectacularly dumb people who would give me such snippets of wisdom as:

(when asked what they think of going to devon) 'isn't it in dover?
'i'm not allowed safty peelers cos i cut myself on them'
(in the middle of a 4 day power cut after some idiots flashfried themselves trying to steel copper wires from a relay station)'why doesnt my computer work?'
'what is the point of a male chicken if they dont lay eggs?'
and from one girl in my 6form.
(when asked what she thought of some indian crickiter or other) 'i only eat kormas'
(on non-uniform day when i turned up in my trenchcoat, new rocks etc) 'do your people wear black?' (considering we're both European caucasians it caused some comment in the class)
though to be fair she was the girl that when asked to go to the d.t. dept for a sky hook, elbow grease and a long wait didnt return until the end of the lesson and still hadnt clocked we'd been messing around.

happy days.

I have a friend who is so clueless. He'll ask questions that have obvious answers and I give him a response that makes him figure it out on his own. So gorram frustrating having to spoon feed a friend Modern Warfare 2, and he's played CoD4 to death as well.

sigh

Never try arguing over the drinking age with college students. We had a discussion over if the US drinking age should be lower to 18 from the current standard of 21. The entire class ganged up against me and proceed to ignore every input I gave as if I was a complete idiot. I suppose it wasn't a display of stupidity but it did frustrate me that not one person even tried to see my point or level with me.
Hmmm...wonder which side you took.

Oh, and my roommate told me this one.

During biology, they were talking about reproduction and what not, and it was mentioned that a type of glucose (sugar) was a key component in semen. A girl in class raised her hand (she was probably 15 or 16) and asked:

"Is that why it tastes sweet?"

She was dead serious. She didn't even realize what information she was divulging about herself...

I personally WISH I could have been there.
are you serious cause semen doesnt taste sweet.

wait, what??

I finished my second novel this week and sent it over to Dark Horse.

Back at school, in the nightmare that is Alabamian public education:
So, I'm playing Assassin's Creed II with one of my friends (still in school) today, and I stop by Da Vinci's workshop. He absent-mindedly asked if Leonardo was Italian.

After a moment of stunned silence, I answer his question and tell him to go read a book.

He then oggles at me for a second before explaining that his school has a policy that prevents students from reading or borrowing non-fiction books until they've read at least ten school-owned doorstop fictions.

Guess what's at the top of the required reading list.

Go on. Guess.

Little Women? No.

Flowers for Algernon? No.

Lord of the Rings? No.

Umm...Crazy in Alabama? No.

Well, what is it then?

Eragon.

Mother. F**king. Eragon.

I shit you not.

Your thoughts?
What the- What kind of policy is that?! No, seriously. In a public school? Dude... And I thought it was bad here...

And Eragon on the top list? Man...

As for the stupid virus, I don't think I have seen someone afflicted with it to that point.

Though, that many people...? Something like that has never happened to me.
Even if it did, it would probably only be the guys of the class. Most of the girls I know love gay people. Go figure.
Guys are terrified that if they condone homosexuality, they'll be called gay, because the implication/stereotype is that gay=girly. Girls tend to love gay guys because they're not gonna hit on them. I'm not so clear on lesbian stereotypes... I know one of my bisexual girl friend's best friends freaked out when he found out, even though they were so close up until then. I know her sister won't even look at her if she has a girlfriend.

I understand why it happens, but it's an unfortunate double-standard that people are willing to say "I support gay rights, as long as you don't think I'm gay." There's nothing wrong with being gay. There's nothing wrong with people thinking you're gay if you're not. I mean, (if you're a straight guy,) you've probably had to turn down a girl who liked you who you didn't want to date, yes? Or you will have to. It's exactly the same idea, if a gay guy hits on you: all you have to do is politely say "Sorry, I don't swing that way."
Meh I'm extraordinary camp. And a romantic; so yes I am popular with the ladies. And mainly because I have no interest in them thanks to my romanticism and act rather like a stereotypical gay. Not THAT bad mind. Also while we are at it lasses tend to make the best friends.

When my friend came out to her mother, she pulled over on the side of the road in shock and started crying. Next thing you know she's picked up a copy of "How to deal with your lesbian daughter" or something to that effect. Ah... Christian families from Georgia.

Who are you to judge?

There are some things that [footnote]Unless you operate on a much higher level than the common populace. In the whole 1+1=2 argument, it can be argued whether or not it actually does.[/footnote] are irrefutable. 1+1=2, for example, is as certain as the difference between black and white.

Morals, however, are entirely grey.
Well you can debate morals to infinity in a philosophical sense. But that is little more than intellectual jerk off.

However if we are material beings in a material world, then science can be applied to the discussion of morality and the discussion will actually become useful for something, like for example when talking about what kind of society you want to live in, whether or not it should be considered a crime to have a different sexual orientation than the main populace, etc.

The sad fact is that to often highly philosophical ideas are wielded by ignorant pricks and warped in such a way that the discussion of morality becomes meaningless to the material world. And then what fucking use is it?

Personally, I still sometimes wear a small enamel pink triangle because somethings should never be forgotten (I could also wear the black one for mental health).

That people around the world are still imprisoned or executed for being homosexual makes me profoundly sad - but not at all surprised. It seems to be a feature of humanity to persecute minorities.

It was not that long ago I had to dodge a full coke can thrown from a speeding car while some troglodytes yelled "lezzer" at me. It was not that long ago that I found myself on a garage forecourt, lookig for the security cameras to make sure someone would bear witness to me having seven bells kicked out of me (fella backed down before it went that far, but it was close and scary).

People around me still use hateful speech. People still use "that is so gay" as a synonym for bad/rubbish/useless. The moment it is out of their mouth (or typed) then as far as I am concerned, they are mentally erased from existence - I will disregard everything they say/feel/think. I no longer have the patience to consider the ignorant.

Fortunately the UK as reasonably robust laws to protect me - could do better, but could be a shitload worse. I have done my protesting, petitioning, walking in marches it is time for others to stand up.

The teacher; while hardly an advocate of such things as homophobia. Has no control over this class at all.

be honest, is it newcastle?

I've never had anything like that, I'm from Brighton, we like-a dem gays. mostly. although I have to say I am never ever attending gay pride. just makes me feel ill.

erm, any idiocy... I once went to my friends bible group and they posed the question why did adam and all the others live so long and we all had to come up with an idea. I couldn't bring myself to say to my newly found friends that it's clearly bollocks so I said "maybe they measured time differently back then?" and the group leader sneered at me and everyone looked at me condescendingly and said, "I guess it's possible" (that was the gist of it). I mean COME ON! like it's any less believable than the shit you're plucking straight out of the bible.
No it's near enough to Birmingham.
And why did you go to the bible group? If you are a strong Atheist?

With the following assumptions:

The following must be true:
0*1=0*2

Dividing by zero gives:
(0/0)*1=(0/0)*2

Simplified, yields:
1=2

therefore 1+1=4
I'm pretty sure you just proved my point; however, I was under the impression that you can't divide by zero.
it isn't really dividing by zero, it is cancelling out, check wikipedias page for dividing by 0
It is really dividing by zero. It is EXACTLY dividing by zero. It's not allowed and so your proof doesn't work. The wikipedia article you referred us to even has this "proof" as an example of errors that arise if you divide by zero. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Division_by_zero#Fallacies_based_on_division_by_zero
