And again... you should pay attention in class more often. Your and you're are not the same. I find it especially humorous since you are calling someone else stupid and getting that wrong in the same sentence.

I hadn't realized that anti-gay sentiment was actually that strong in England. I guess it's one of those misconceptions that I have as an American liberal, to imagine England and other western European countries to be far more progressive than my own. I mean, I live in Oklahoma, which is right in the bible belt, the focal point of conservativism here in America. Hell, we were the only state in which not even a single district went for Obama during the last election. But I rarely ever saw anti-gay sentiment expressed like that in school.

Anyways, as for undefinable stupiditiy. Well, when I was taking World History our teacher was going over Oligarchy (the form of government) with us, and this kid who sat a couple of chairs in front of me just suddenly bursts out "Oligarchy! Is that where they got Olive Garden from?!" I guess the similarity of the words "Oligarchy" and "Olive Garden" had been too overpowering for his mind. Then again, this was the same kid who once ate Miracle Grow to see if it'd make him grow any faster. Needless to say, he wasn't exactly the brightest light in the outhouse.
Outhouse? Crap, I thought it was lighthouse, thanks for that!
On subject, I myself know many people that are not exactly intolerant, but that aren't particularly friendly to homosexuals. Several of them describe anything they do not like as, "gay," for example, "I hate Dan Brown, his books are gay." I disagree with that statement (quoted literally from one of my notreallyfriends) for two reasons:
1: I do not believe that books have sexual desire or a sexual preference.
2: Dan Brown is a good author, that should not receive as much negative attention as he does.

Should be:

Oh my god...you're THAT stupid?

Honestly if you didn't rant about how this was in an English lesson I'd have left it. =P

On topic tho, you really should have pointed out that Hitler had a similar view on Homosexuals. Usually shuts people up when they realise they're pushing Nazism.
Huh what? I see no mistake?

Fixed that for you.

Then he preceded to insist it was "wrong" and should be a crime.
He insisted that homophobia should be a crime?
Again what is the imaginary slip of the mind? And yes. He did.

I was actually thinking the same thing.

On Topic: What's wrong with that? I mean, sure, some people are going to support Gay Rights like you do, and some people are going to be against homosexuals alltogether.
What's wrong with that? It boils down to racism. You are not honestly going to defend that are you?

My work here is done.
Hey look an elitist ass picking up on a slip of the mind of a (mildly) drunk guy fixing a previous slip up of using the wrong "your/you're" and was busy replying to posts. Hey look at him everybody. He is cool. Give it a rest will you? My patience for rude and frankly unhelpful people like yourself is at it's end recently. It was pointed out (in a far less derogative manner) than yours several times before. So essentially you came to this thread for that sole purpose. Making you, a troll. A grammatically correct twice as annoying self righteous troll. So either contribute or shut the hell up.

These.
I use the Hitler/Nazism thing myself whenever I can, which is worryingly often since most of the guys I know seem to be quite rascist. Nothing says "fun times" like mentioning that there was a German party around year 1940 who had some similar views and seeing them slowly make the association...

More on-topic: I'm sure that I've had similar experiences, but I can't for the life of me remember any of them. Well, except for the rascist thoughts some of the people I know keep on saying, with gems such as "those darn immigrants, destroying my moped. We should make them all go home!", as if all immigrants went as a whole big group and decided that they were going to tip his moped over.

If he isn't going to defend that I sure as hell am. People should be allowed to think what the heck they like, as long as they don't act on it. You aren't advocating the idea of thought-crimes are you?

This doesn't surprise me. I live in Britain too and we're just as, mayhaps more, intolerant than the rest of the world. School kids are no exception to the rule and when they finally figure out what the European Union is they'll have an uneducated ***** about that as well.

You see, many of these people ACT on what they are saying. And very very often cuss down gay individuals, and myself for supporting them. I don't think you will defend that will you?

My history teacher in 7th grade was an editor for our local paper and a known radical Republican with racist and homophobic tendencies. He was arrested that year for harassing a gay man outside of Rite-Aid, which was literally right next door to our school. I found it strange that he was allowed to keep teaching afterwards!

It's far easier to keep quiet rather than defend your beliefs logically and reasonably in the face of ignorant comments, so for that I applaud you.

@slashergirl lol now THAT is irony

The only really stupid thing i've heard someone say in class was in Geography (or was it History?) anyways we were talking about farming and how farmer grafted trees to help them grow (or maybe it was a topic jump) and this really stupid girl who was repeating the class i was in said "maybe we should do that with cows"... not sure how cows got thrown in there but i digress, ever since that day people have yelled out "GRAFTING COWS help them grow", one of those 'You had to be there moments'

OT: Wow ... i'm quite shocked at your story it's mind boggling

Well, you never said anything about that. It just sounded like this was a one off when they was giving their views in class, not part of a hate campaign.

They have every right to hate anything they want, or think something is wrong. They don't have the right to make someone feel miserable because of those views tho, no.

Well thank you. Though admittedly I did get close to losing my temper. Mainly due to other current circumstance though.

I don't mind people thinking racist. The thought crime thing is mad. You can not help what you think, perhaps voicing them when clearly offensive, maybe... not a crime but frowned upon. I mean sure I will argue with BNP supporters which a number in my school are, for stupid stupid reasons. More so recently for a need to vent some frustration.

Crap double post, sorry wrong button

Well no I've never seen anyone say or do something that was memorably idiotic. Or perhaps they have and I haven't tried to remember it because I don't want to ring a sense of self-satisfaction from the stupidity of others.

There are a lot of stupid people in this world, it seems, but then again intelligent people aren't usually noticed in the way that idiots are. Possibly because they don't try to draw attention to themselves.

Here's one from a biology lesson a few years ago:
Teacher: What cycle was devised during the Agricultural Revolution to re-nitrify soil?
Pupil: The menstrual cycle.

I'm quite honestly not surprised by the homophobia. People are people no matter where you go.

I do, however find it pretty damn funny how many people correct your minor mistake.
Just because you're in an English class doesn't mean you're good at everything.

But I disagree with your class and their intolerance. Its going back as opposed to forwards. Next time someone says something like that I recommend asking them what their opinions on black people are, and if they should have the right to be married. You're probably going to find a little inconsistency with their views. Point that out to them.

Right hello. Yeah. I was in my English lesson today. It was pretty laid back and due to an earlier incident The topic of Racism and homophobia was brought up. The person sitting in front of me went? Homophobia? what's that. (it gets worse) I explained somewhat shocked he didn't know that. Then he preceded to insist it was "wrong" and should be a crime (homosexuality). Of course that bugged me (not gay) so I went to defend against this complete buffoon. My reward? The entire 30 person class of supposed intellectuals yelling me down because I support gay rights. I mean what? They were saying things like "Yeah well I don't want that up there" supposedly assuming every gay person is a rapist. And that it's a choice. A choice? I mean what?

So as for discussion. Can you share similar moments when you are over come by a wave of undefinable levels of stupidity by one of even a group of people?

I'm English and in a rather "normal" area
Something strikes me as odd here.

Them not supporting gay rights has nothing to do with how intelligent they are, it's just their personal beliefs and such about morals. Last I checked, morals is a grey area.

That being said, they would've looked more intelligent if they didn't all rise up simultaneously and bleat loudly "no gay, no gay" in your face.

Also, the guy would've looked smarter if he actually knew what homophobia was, but then there are certain things I don't know that most people do know (e.g. my own height). And that has nothing to do with my level of intelligence. It just means I never really had a reason to measure my height. I also didn't know what the word "expendable" meant up until a few years back and I only found out because CABAL mentioned it during one of the mission briefings in Tiberian Sun and I ended up asking my grandparents what it meant.

Never try arguing over the drinking age with college students. We had a discussion over if the US drinking age should be lower to 18 from the current standard of 21. The entire class ganged up against me and proceed to ignore every input I gave as if I was a complete idiot. I suppose it wasn't a display of stupidity but it did frustrate me that not one person even tried to see my point or level with me.
