So I was watching the local news here in Florida when I came across this story

Parents Want Sexually Explicit Books Relocated At Library

LEESBURG -- A group of concerned parents wants librarians to pull several books off the shelves and relocate them to the adult section.

The parents said the books contain sexually explicit language and are inappropriate for teens.

Dixie Fechtel said she can't believe the books her daughter has access to in the young adult section at the Leesburg Public Library.

"I was just accidentally thumbing through the books that she had read and I just couldn't believe what was in them," Fechtel said. "It was really shocking. We're talking about teens having chain sex, which they say is the equivalent of chain smoking."

Some parents said that's just part of the inappropriate material that teenagers are reading in books like the Gossip Girl series and others.

They now have several books they want separated from the rest of the young adult section.

Fechtel and other parents have joined forces with churches in the community, including First Baptist Church Leesburg to prevent teens from stumbling upon the books.

"We're not saying censor them get them out of the library. We're just saying this hard language, sexual erotica, that it really doesn't need to be in there for minors," said Art Ayris from the First Baptist Church Leesburg.

"I don't think in the books that they found sex is gloried. Violence is there to make a point," said Wendy Breeden, the president of the Florida Library Association.

Some parents argue movies and even video games are labeled based on their content, and books should be no different.

Breeden said the private industries are the ones responsible for those labels, and it's a slippery slope if librarians were to get involved.

Some parents in Leesburg said they're determined to get those books out of the young adult area and said they could broaden their fight to the whole county.
The group fighting to get the books removed from the teen section is, unsurprisingly, a band of old folks. They actually are petitioning the library and are threatening to take it up with the Mayor/city council if the books are not removed from the teen section of the library...

On the television spot for this an old man went as far as calling Gossip Girls "pornography". I just couldn't /facepalm any harder when I heard that. I've heard some crazy "think about the children!" rants before but calling Gossip Girls Porn is like calling Wayne Brady a Gangster Rapper. God this reminds me why I hate living in Florida...

So my fellow Escapists, should the library be forced to put books like Gossip Girls into a seperate "adult" section?

Eh; I don't see much wrong with it. I mean, this is the state that raised Jack Thompson we're talking about here; I'm not surprised, disgusted, or appaled at anything that goes on in there.

In short, I'm neutral.

The irony is, do you know how many Young Adults probably knew about those books before? And how many know now? Yeah, good going there.

And that's ignoring the total bullshit of the situation anyway.

If they do move the books it just shows that we are still ruled by what old folks have to say about everything. Well almost...

I don't see any harm in giving books ratings similar to what DVDs and video games have to go through. I don't know why they don't already. But saying it's pornography is just ridiculous. And besides, young adults are still adults, they're just younger than regular adults so they should be able to read whatever they want.

No no it's totally not like these books are experiences that will help teens understand the *ahem* REAL WORLD.
That's stupid in my opinion. I've read plenty of books, and I think it's normal human behavior. Not worth attempting to block it.

No, they should remove that trash. Libraries are for books. Gossip Girl is probably one of the lowest iq programs out there, right down there with the hills. I think anything to do with Gossip Girl should be socially rejected.

But I do disagree with the reasoning of the elderly. At least the kids are reading. And chain sex =/= chain smoking. Use a condom, and fucking is good for you.

Well they're gonna have to learn about sex one way or another one day.
But you have to remember,Alot of parents don't let their kids take sex ed and then refuse to talk to them about it and when they hear about it somewhere else they're like"PORN AND MURDER!!!!" Which i think is really funny since it doesn't matter if it's porn or really f%$#ing bloody T.V/video games mostly people between the ages of 12-19 love that stuff

"...We're talking about teens having chain sex, which they say is the equivalent of chain smoking."

That made me scratch my head a little.

The problem about this sort of thing, I think, is that what is flouting around in the heads of teenagers is alot worse than can possibly be found in a book say like Gossip girl.

Kinda like a mother not letting her 15 year old boy read one of these books even though it's safe to assume he masturbates every day.

They're trying to control what people can and can't read now? Why am I not surprised?

Actually that could be considered pornography. The definition of pornography is media that is ment to stimulate. If the author ment to stimulate the reader, then it is pornography.

Anyway, I think they are going a little overboard. If they are old enough to read in the young adult section, then they can read about sex.

That isnt true. Do I need to list the reasons?

Are they that afraid of letting children know a simulation on how the real world is like?

That's weird because I live in Florida and I swear on every summer reading I pick the book with the sex scenes in it.

OP: Gossip Girls is corrupting our children......with stupid, not sex.
