His performance in this video at the 4:20 mark is bland and emotionless? I'll answer that for you, no it's not. He actually sounds like a closet shut-in.ZiggyE said:Chris Patton is just bad. When I started watching that show I didn't know anything about it. My first thought was "Well this is either a horrible dub or a terrific one". The answer, as it turns out, is the latter.PoisonUnagi said:Try Abenobashi
I'm not much of an anime person, but I have watched a few since a couple of my friends are big into it.Johnnie Brambora said:Ok so, to me, subs are always vastly superior. However, there have been a few shows where the dub was so amazing that it couldn't be watched without the dub.
Those shows are:
Cowboy Bebop
Eden of The East
Baccano!
Trigun (the dub here is just preferred, it's not amazing or anything)
Black Lagoon
Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro
Samurai Champloo
Steamboy
That being said, those are only about 15% of the shows I've seen, so I still VASTLY prefer subs, but when a dub is good... it's amazing. Especially for eden of the east, the dub added 20 levels of depth to the characters that the sub couldn't do. Highly recommended.
If closet shut-ins have weird inflections (maybe years of not talking to anybody makes one forget how to speak?) then yes, he sounds like a closet shut in. Considering the old lady he was talking to sounded weird too, though, I'd say the voice acting just isn't very good. He's got the yelling part down, but it's kind of a "WHY AM I YELLING? I HAVE NO EARTHLY IDEA" Will Ferrel-comedy yelling, and not a realistic "I'm yelling because it's called for by my emotional state" type of yelling.WayOutThere said:His performance in this video at the 4:20 mark is bland and emotionless? Aren't most of the terms in Bleach spanish, which would make it sound just as strange in japanese?Yosato said:Bleach? I mentioned this in a post the other day. I don't think the dub is AWFUL but everything in it is just SO Japanese that it really takes you out of it when you hear it in English. The characters will say a line and there's like five Japanese words in a single sentence; sounds really forced.
Just having Japanese names for characters I can deal with (Like Yu Yu Hakusho has a great dub), but in Bleach there's place names, concepts, sword names and attack names to keep up with.
Actually, Spanish and German vocabularies are used often enough in anime that they don't seem out of place. I also think that any person would be more comfortable mixing foreign with foreign than mixing known with foreign.Gasaraki said:Aren't most of the terms in Bleach spanish, which would make it sound just as strange in japanese?Yosato said:Bleach? Nah, there's basically 3 different languages. The shinigami terminology is Japanese, the hollow terminology is Spanish and the Quincy terminology is German. Most of the dialogue is from the shinigami, then from the hollows later on, but I don't understand either Japanese OR Spanish so it doesn't seem weird to me. I think you've got a point though - I think that if I was native to Japan I'd think it sounded strange.Gasaraki said:Aren't most of the terms in Bleach spanish, which would make it sound just as strange in japanese?Yosato said:Bleach? Trust me, I know, and he sucks in all of them and trust me, there are plenty of great dubs that do not have him in it (or only as a very minor character that appears for 1 episode), here are a few: Samurai Champloo, Death Note, Basilisk, Afro Samurai, Ergo Proxy, Blade of the immortal, Ghost in the Shell, Shigurui, Hellsing, Hellsing Ultimate, Gungrave, and countless more I'm sureAuricTrinity_XL said:Hate to break it to you but Johnny Yong Bosch has done enough anime roles to rule out a significant portion of dubs if one was to follow your maxim, many of them very good dubs.yaz1410 said:Any anime that has the guy who does Ichigo's (Bleach) english voice is complete and utter crap in english
