Whenever I watch something with subs, I feel like I'm being given an eye exam.
I don't mind reading, in fact I love to read, but I like to read at my own pace, and that's kind of hard to do when the subtitles only last a few seconds.
Now that I think about it, a good number of the anime I watch have some really confusing stuff happening in it 90% of the time. Watching it in Japanesse would just make it to hard to keep up.

I love anime and have watched tons in english and in japanese but for the most part I prefer dubs to subs but everything looses and gains something when it is translated

Im gonna say My bride is a mermaid ( google it if you don't know wtf im talking about). It was just terrible dubbed but subbed it was good.
I watched Clannad and thought it was mediocre. Would it be better if I watched it in Japanese? No, because I'm still the same cold, heartless bastard I've always been, and I'd hate half the cast regardless of how good their voice acting is.
But getting my (incredibly smug) opinion out of the way, I watch anime both ways. I thought the dub in Clannad was passable, though I can see why you'd want to watch it in Japanese. And then there are certain other animes where watching them in Japanese just plain doesn't make any sense. See: Baccano!, Black Lagoon, stuff like that.
What I don't get is why people are still having this moronic debate. It's petty and idiotic. Some people like to watch things dubbed, others like to watch it subbed. Can't we all just... Get along?

Yeah i will easily agree that it didn't close a lot of holes but for what ever reason...Im satisfied. I have no idea why though...I think after the end of claymore which is the biggest let down of my life nothing can compare to that. But Im sad it ended, lame ending, but overall it was worth my time so its all good.Yosato said:

Well, I nearly always watch dubbed, unless the voice acting is particularly horrible. That's just for anime though, dubbed live action stuff is just awful. So bad...
Durarara, I cringed so hard when I heard it dub, the characters came off so flat or the voices didn't work with the characters which is the damn shame with who they got to do them.

I mean besides the terrible voice acting, complete removal of entire story arcs, the infamous rap opening, the dub responsible for inventing "hammer-guns" (instead of a regular gun) and "poison suction cups" (instead of darts). All instances of blood, any reference to alcohol, cleavage, tattoos, any mention of death, even certain reference to acts of violence are completely removed. The censorship and editing was just downright silly in several places. Just look up on google, or perhaps youtube.

But when a dub is really bad, I'll just watch it subbed. No dubbing. Ever. Subtitles are allowed. Dubbing takes so much away form the movie. And yes I do know that subtitles can distract too. And know some people dont want to read durning a movie.

Sure Project Blue Earth SOS had some really flat english voice acting but there's no way good voice acting would have saved that piece of crap. Oh and fine, I suppose Princess Mononoke did have flat English voice acting. That was dissapointing. I've only seen the film once though so I've yet to try it in Japanese.
And on the matter, I've no idea why English voice acting recieves such hate. I only very rarely have a problem with it and even then usually not much of one (SOS and Mononoke had flat voice acting, not intolerable voice acting). It often feels like I'm watching entirely different shows than that haters are. It certainly feels that way about the Op's hate of Clannad's voice acting which was just fine in my opinion.
(Yay Luci Christian as Nagisa, her voice acting is always superb.)
I think most animes are better in Japanese, but that might be because in Sweden we barely translate anything, at least nothing in English. I'm not thinking entirely of animes, Das Boot for example is much better in German than English. (Great movie btw, one of the best war movies I've watched.)
