It really depends on a case by case basis with me. There are some shows I won't watch subbed (Hellsing OVA's, Cowboy Bebop) and some that I refuse to watch the subds cause they are horrid (Abenobashi, HIgurashi)
For the most part, we don't watch movies at all unless they come from Hollywood. Anime is fringe as it is, but live action films from countries that speak a language other than English? Just about the only people who watch those are film students, who of course watch them subbed. On the other hand, most foreign movies that reached some form of popularity did it dubbed -- notably Godzilla and a fair few Kung Fu movies, all of which were hilariously poorly dubbed. The only notable exception was Pan's Labyrinth, which was only released subbed, because Gulliermo Del Toro put it into the release contract.Anoni Mus said:

Worst dubbing I've ever experienced that isn't a hentai are a dark coloured book, was Let the Right One In. I had just finished the book, and ordered the movie on Amazon. The purchase came with a download copy as well. So after paying for the bluray I began to download the movie so I could watch it right away. It was good, not bad for a book based movie. Than the Bluray came the next day, popped it in, and it defaulted to English for the spoken language. I tried it out for a little while...Oskar wasn't too bad...it was Conny I think, the main bully, who was just awfully cast for the English dub. The rest weren't anywhere nearly as bad. Don't get me wrong all the dubbing VA's were bad...but Conny's just made it unwatchable. I promptly switched spoken language to Swedish, and enjoyed the movie a second time.

I just finished watching Soul Eater today (dub version) and I have to say I agree with you on Black Star. From the first moment he even spoke it was clear he'd be the weakest, but then again I've heard worse and it got better as the show went on. Man did that ending suck though! I heard that the manga is different so I started reading that earlier.Mr. Google said:
There's obviously a lot of bad dubs out there, but generally everything Funimation does is at worst passable and at it's best, phenomenal. Anime dubs are waaaay better than they were in the 80's and 90's, that's for sure, and I think there's a lot of silly elitism regarding dubs versus subs. Off the top of my head, I would argue that Fullmetal Alchemist is one anime with superior dubs to subs, mostly thanks to Ed's squeaky Japanese voice actor and also because they throw around a lot of western terminology. I also really love Baccano's New York accents as it fits the show perfectly. The Japanese VA's do a excellent job as well, but it's an anime that works better in English IMO.
I also watch and enjoy plenty of anime in Japanese that do not have dubs, so I'm not particularly on any one side of the fence.

All ive heard is about how bad the ending is. I am so worried i have like 6 more episodes. Is it a cliffhanger or just like They should have gone on sorta ending? I can live with a should have gone on but not a cliff hanger.Yosato said:

If I wanted to read, I'd grab a book or the manga of whatever the show is. I've heard the One Piece dub is an absolute travesty, but I never watched the subbed version either.

There's so many characters that seem pointless and subplots that don't get resolved. Remember Excalibur? Joe B? Justin (headphone priest guy)? None of them get anything done with them at all despite them being some kind of a big deal in their entrance.
And as for the subplots there's a load that just goes out of the window. There's a few that I can't recall but one that sticks out for me: you might remember about halfway through the show when the tiny red demon guy in Soul's mind says something like "I knew you'd come, Soul Eater Evans." to which he replied: "Don't call me by that name!"
Yeah, that never gets brought up again and it's the only time he's ever called it in the anime. Makes NO sense whatsoever.
This, basically. I never got the thinking that watching an anime subbed was somehow...I don't know the right word, superior? Unless you speak Japanese, the way they talk is kinda meaningless. Also the argument that the speech is...again don't know what word fits best "More accurate" I guess, is ridiculous, because again, you have absolutely no idea if it is or not you're at the mercy of the subbers accuracy at that point.Antitonic said:

Because subtitles and english scripts are different, for one. Also the original Japanese sounds better to me, while the English sounds... awkward and horrible. Not all dubs are terribad, just most of them. For a comparison, any dub by Tokyopop is shit. Compare the Tokyopop version of Initial D to the Funimation version. Compare also Lucky Star and Haruhi in English and Japanese. On the flip side, occasionally you get gems like Outlaw Star, which has a superlative dub.
Well, after doing some research on my childhood obsession, I've found that I prefer the original Super Sentai series far more than its American counterpart, Power Rangers.

Naruto. It's not good in japanese but it's worse in english, and one of my friends loves it and watches it IN ENGLISH
