Most Anime shows dont have amazing English dubs, it's just how it is. However, I find that the English dub of Black Lagoon is actually more appropriate for the Anime - it has a western atmosphere and references, plus that way you get to escape the hilarious chinglish :3

But in most cases it's just better in Japanese.

Hellsing dub is amazing, but with Jouji Nakata as Alucard and Norio Wakamoto as Anderson...

I love both.

Generally dubs are inferior, from my experience (in b4 'Take the potato chip...AND EAT IT'), but both serve a purpose.

I think dubbing (voice-over) is an important factor in Turkey.

If I not mistaken, our every old movie is voice overed, there were no microphone or recording devices on the sets. Many actors were dubbed by different actors. Even some of our new TV series (that can use even new technologies) dubs the main actor's voice for a better voice by another person.
Our voice dubbing actors are very good.

However, the problem is, dubbing a foreign movie is very different than dubbing a local movie. they try to sync the voice with the lips, therefore stupid translations occur occasionally.
A simple example: The original lines are "Please don't hurt my son", and the dubbed lines are "Where is your heart?".
This effects all the continuty in the movie scenes.
Another bad thing is, the voiceover actors try to sync the lips, but they don't care about the accents. For example, in the original scene, a russian and irish talks and the audience who watches that movie in English language loves that scene. But we watch it as two same accented people and don't understand the ecene.
What I mean is, dubbing skills in Turkey are high, but accent skills are very low.
These kind of things affects the movie enjoyment.

Of course, there are some translated movies or shows nearly as good as the original one. For example imo, X-Men TV Series in Turkish translation was better than original one. Some lines might be wrong, but still the accents of the characters were very good.

but it is a similar situtation in English-Japanese comparison as well.

Original is better,
because you watch as the creators were intended in the first place.

Most of the Japanese animes should be watched as Japanese dub and English sub.

As I mentioned, there could be some expectations. For example I really liked the voice of Onizuka in GTO. I can say Ghost In The Shell SAC English dub is also good, but not as deep as the original Japanese voices. But Naruto English dub? ugh, that's is terrible for me, so dull.

As I told before, original is better,
for example Japanese intro for Dragonball is bettter than English intro:

me and him watch subbed stuff together all the time IE: Death Note, Bleach, Code Geauss.

I can't speak for Bleach, but Death Note and Code Geass had fantastic dubs, I can't imagine watching them subbed again.

I have seen serveral series in scandinavia which have been dubbed in english instead of the original Swedish or in the other case german. And it seriously ruins it for me. A perfect emersion breaker, having these american actors trying to pronounce for example Harnøsand. So yeah, I'm pro original language.

Don't watch One Piece in Engrish. If you liked the voice actors the first season well then after Crocodile goes down the drain THEY CHANGE VOICE ACTORS!

I like the dubs for that though the dubs probably are better. There are some parts that i think would be a lot funnier in Japanese like Kid's obsession with symmetry. But its on netflix as dubbed so I'm watching it like that. Almost done with the show it's really good.

it really is a great show, but you can watch it online with the sub, when i heard blackstar English voice i nearly raged. But hey if you been watching it in English then their really is no problem to it.

For me, the issue isn't having subtitles as a distraction (I often watch english voice, english subtitles for normal movies), but simply that japanese voices don't really convey as much to me. So when I'm hearing this (made-up japanese)...

'Eeeyeeey!! Bontaio kusuraio do'oschkai!
Naanee, nane...umpoati Kasio-chan weskaan, eh?
eh?? K-...K'SOOO.....UUURUTAIII???

It doesn't have the same impact as hearing the inflections WITH a language I understand. Even when the dub is sub-par, I don't get any emotional impact from a completely different language. Plus, any form of glassware tends not to survive long around the typical Japanese female voice.

Interesting that you say Death Note and Claymore were two of the better dubbed animes, because i was about to say those two as ones that were way better subbed.. those two plus Full Metal Alchemist

Never seen Claymore or FMA. Death Note is my favorite anime, and I like it subbed rather than dubbed. My girlfriend convinced me to watch it subbed, it's pretty much win.

On topic: I only know that DBZ was good dubbed. I don't know about other animes, since I've really only watched DBZ and Death Note.

Once, the Totoro movie was going to be shown on TV, and I was like "fuck yeah, Totoro! I've always wanted to see that movie". So you can understand I was dissapointed when it was in ENGLISH. Major letdown.

For me it's whatever I tend to hear and get used to first. Hellsing and Full Metal Panic I watched dubbed because I got used to all the voices, I won't even watch Full Metal Panic subbed unless they air a new season. I won't watch Clannad, Higurashi, or anything else I heard subbed first in English, I get to used to the Japanese voices.

While I often do prefer subs, you gotta admit there are English dubs that are amazing. Wolf's Rain, FullMetal Alchemist, Eureka Seven, Noein... I don't watch much anime these days so I can't think of any more.

Croatian version was translated from German (strange since they used to show Japanese subbed version before) so it had the same fucking song. Ugh.

I think you overreacted a lot here.

I know the great 'dubbed-subbed' debate rages on in anime forums but really if someone has managed to get into it and you want to encourage them you shouldn't be shutting them down. I watch anime both subbed and dubbed (Trigun for example I have watched both ways) and really apart from some where the English voice actors are obviously not into it its fine either way.

I know people who can't stand to watch anime in Japanese because they want to actually see what's happening instead of being constantly looking at subtitles. It's okay if you're a fast reader, like I am, but when it;s someone who doesn't read really quickly, reading the subtitles can take a lot of the fun out of the experience.

So yeah, let your brother watch it in whatever he wants as long as he's enjoing it.

As for your discussion, Trigun I prefer in English mostly, Hellsing was much much better in English, and really only Elfen Lied I thought sounded better in Japanese.

Elfen Lied was WAAAYYY better in Japanese. The english voice acting sounds like they really don't care about the roles.

I meant the dubs probably better* messed that up in my first response and yeah....I hate him because of that...Actually his voice alone made me want to stop on the second episode. Surprised i didnt.

Zeta Gundam. Now, I usually watch subs out of principle, but this one takes the cake as the worst dub I have ever seen -- and that includes 4-kids dubs. While the script is relatively faithful to the source, you could tell the actors didn't give a crap about the delivery of their lines; it's just painful to listen to. Which is a shame, since the dub got a nice 5.1 track, while the original is in mono; Gundam is one of those series that is, in and of itself, an argument for surround sound.


Also:

I have this irrational hatred of all things dubbed egraved into my brain, so for me, anything that isn't originally in english. I think the two main reasons why I hate dubbing are that I'm not used to it, and most dubs I can remember have been horrible.

I live in Finland, and the only tv shows or movies that get dubbed here are those that are meant for younger kids, who probably can't read yet. Everything else is subtitled so I've grown to get used to it, and dubbing just seems wrong.
And the things that do get dubbed in finnish are almost always practically unwatchable for anyone older than (just making up a number) 10 years.
The only show I can watch dubbed and not feel uneasy is the Moomins, and that's because I've always watched it dubbed (the swedish dub for it isn't terrible either).

By the way, the Moomins tv show is made in Japan, so I guess it counts as "anime".

Someone earlier in the thread said something to the effect that, for fast readers like himself, subs were better, but that we shouldn't push them too hard and risk turning away slower readers. While I can understand that in the case of people with learning disabilities (dyslexia in particular) it says something about the American education system that we have a significant percentage of the population who don't have a learning disability but still can't read fast enough to enjoy a subtitled movie. There's usually not much text on screen at a time, and it generally stays up for a while, too.

I've never done Subbed, the only anime I can get is all Dubbed. Cowboy Bebop was a pretty good Dub I thought, however I just started rewatching Gundam Wing for the first time since I was younger and it doesn't seem that good, the lines seem off and little stuff like that. I dunno, I guess it all varies from person to person, and I think every Anime is different

It's all about practice. If almost every show you've watched since about age 7 has been subtitled, you'll get pretty good at it. Of course this doesn't really work for U.S. for example, because most of the stuff that's on tv is in english (both in the U.S. and Finland).

There's also the fact that unlike english, finnish is spelled almost exactly like it's spoken, but I don't know if that really affects anything.
