AH The Guild!!! I love that game, such an interesting title. Lost so much time to it.
Oh yeah. I need to get more people into it so that I can host a LAN game.
My life is missing something. :p

I got Carmageddon from Gog.com yesterday, oddly my favourite thing is the option of having the portrait of your driver in the corner reacting to what the car's doing.

I always play the Half-Life games at least once each year. I completed the first Commander Keen game several months ago for the first time in many years which was fun.

So, escapists, what old games have you been playing?
I'm currently working through The Godfather, on the 360. I had it (and completed it twice) on the PS2 back in the day but this one is pretty different. There's a lot more stuff to do, some extra missions, achievements and so on. Lots of fun to be had, even if one or two of the missions are so fucking stupidly difficult I want to shove razor blades up the nostrils of whoever coded them.

Ahem.

Sorry. I'm calm now. Promise.

Don't do it, dude. I had a similar thought myself recently, and have been playing through Sam & Max Hit The Road and a few other old LucasArts titles. All I can say on the subject is

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRGH!!!

Nostalgia is a fine thing, and best kept in the mind. The old point-and-clicks, the output of LucasArts in particular, is so painfully, painfully random and illogical and just plain ****-garglingly stupid that they will drive you insane. Funny, sure, but is it really worth all the mental scarring and screaming abuse at the screen because it's taken you three days to solve a puzzle conceived by MC Escher on LSD?

Oddworld Abe's Oddysee: Hated this game as a child because of how hard it was but now I'm having a blast with it. Still got stuck in the same place I did as a kid though, the Paramonia temple. That one chamber with the spike balls and the bats and the bombs and the bats and the sleeping dog and the bats, is the only area I can't seem to beat. Dying in this game is half the fun of playing too. Love how the sligls laugh at you.

My favorites:

*watch...out...for...that...bat* "What bat?" *Dies* The bat slowly flies around the map while you read that message so when you finally finish it it's close enough to kill you.

"Hi!"
"Hi!"
"Freeze!"
"What?"
BLAM
"Hahaha!"

Then there's that part that you can't get to until you beat both temples, it's filed with bombs and 4 sligh. You can get them into this never ending chain of "what", by saying hello to the one closest to the wall, it's hilarious.

Got Abe's Exodus too but I'll not start playing it till I beat the first one, whenever that'll be.

BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend. I don't know exactly how old it is but I assume it is old enough to be called an old game.

The story is actually good, sometimes a bit confusing when they decide to throw all the big plot words at you at once but maybe you're supposed to be confused until you hit the true ending. I lol'd when I noticed Platinum has a story arc... That should be fun. Seriously what is Platinum? Did whoever leads the characer design at Arc System Works just come into work after binging on a weeks worth of lighthearted highschool anime with romance and wacky comedy elements?
So, Platinum... If you are confused about her backstory, then, as far as I am aware, Trinity, one of the Six Heroes, sealed herself inside this magic rod Platinum is carrying, and when Luna/Sena picked it up, Trinity became part of them.
If you are talking about design... You are pretty much correct. It just seems to me, that ArcSys are making characters based on anime cliches: badass "I don't give a damn" hero, a shy girl with hidden power, etc. Platinum is a kid anime maho-shojo (magician girl) plus split personality.
And about her story mode: I almost pissed myself laughing when I heard Jubei say : "Oy Vey".

OT: Old games... Well, same as OP, I've played Chrono Trigger, also FF IX and SFIII Third strike (online edition). I am also thinking about picking up a Hitman game. The first one, I mean.

System Shock,
System Shock 2,
Final Fantasy 9,
Blood Omen,
Soul Reaver,
Soul Reaver 2,
LOK Defiance,
Oddworld Series,
Half Life and its expansions,
Planescape Torment,
Fallout 1 and 2,
Star Wars Dark Forces + Dark Forces 2 + Mysteries of the Sith,
Finished off the Main Quest in Daggerfall,
Xcom classic series,
Beyond Good and Evil...

and a few more less noteworthy titles.

I always felt that Lucasarts Point n' clicks were better then the average. I fucking love Full Throttle. The logic behind the puzzle can be a little arbitrary, but after a while I find myself thinking in a similar way to the puzzle designer.

They have this one sci-fi point n' click game that I've been looking for, but I don't know the name. It was on the CD for Full Throttle as a Demo, but I've long since lost the disc. Any Idea what it is?

Also Stronghold Crusader, though not as good as I remember it being.

Just started up a game of Serious Sam 2 having only just gotten round to it despite the fact I got it in a Humble Bundle ages ago. Great fun, and it definitely reminds you why the old FPSes were better.

Been replaying a bit of Chrono Trigger on my DS recently as well. Such a good game, always worth replaying again and again. And of course there's my constant replaying of Oblivion. I keep getting pulled back into it.

Just recently dug out my old favourite SNES cult classic Soul Blazer. Not a perfect game, but I still enjoy it, and heckuva fun soundtrack.
