Thank you for some of that music... that was really good. Thank you for trying to educate the people who write off rap and hip-hop as if it's crap without even giving it a try.

Give one of them a try. If you're still not convinced, then you're a lost cause.

I like rap, i just don't like "your rap". Meaning all the "in your face" rappers and rap lovers of today listen to the new and awfully poor stuff being made... Rap has no soul any more. If you, however, listen to what they made in the 80's and 90's? A LOT of great music there, The Roots are a great example of a good R&B group that did what I believe you call "Old School". Good stuff...

Who said I can't be versatile on music^^.

While I don't particularly like rap myself (I prefer stuff with lots of guitars!), I never understood where all the hate came from. It's a perfectly legitimate form of expression, just like any other form of music.

My old supervisor once played me a rap song about being a vegetarian and trying to keep healthy. For the life of me, I cannot remember what that group was called, which is a pity, because I really liked it. It wasn't a parody song or anything; this was a rapper singing about what a nice day it was and what a good gift his health was. Which I admire.

I know what you mean, I'm getting tired of the constant stereotyping of hip hop as crappy music, or not even music at all. Sure, your typical MTV trashy gangsta hip hop is terrible and fucking hilarious, I love to laugh at it, but I keep it in perspective and realize that that's not all hip hop has to offer. Here's a few of my favorite songs:

Sort of an odd hip hop album, short songs, creative beats, smooth and jazzy.
I absolutely love the lyrics in this one
There's a lot of great jazz influenced hip hop out there
And here's a great experimental 'glitch-hop' song:

While I'm mainly a metal fan, I do like me a bit of <a href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1A0BmbiM53Q>Blackalicious (go figure) and the <a href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WV1XzVfYGuo>Nextmen are good too.

And Rap Rock can be awesome.

Have you ever heard of revielle. I think you'll like them

Ooh, that is good. Thank you.
You're welcome, if you liked that, here's one more random band that is no longer together anymore. This band is not as good as Reveille, and the singer's voice may bother you, but I always liked them

They remind me of Chevelle, who I also like if not particularily enamored of the lead singer.

I like your taste in music.

You might like Chevelle, actually.

I do like Chevelle but much prefer their first album. Their second one was okay buT I feel like they kind of sold out. I liked that song you posted though and hadn't heard it. We both have good taste, and can subtly turn a rap thread into a rock one. :p

There's a difference between good and popular.
The stuff you hear on MTV is the stuff that sells.
To all rock fans:
If I would say that I hate rock because Nickelback and Jack Johnson suck, most of you would probably say:
"Don't listen at that crap, I can play you some good stuff."
It's the same with rap - there's good stuff, just not on TV.
The last good popular rap song was "New York" by Jay Z, and before that... I don't know.

The best way to start out with rap (and any other genre for that matter) is to listen to the classics:
KRS One, Rakim, RUN DMC, Naughty by Nature, Kool G Rap, Nas, Outkast, The Roots, just to name a few.
If you won't like any of their stuff then you just don't like rap in general.
However, to base your opinion on music just by looking at what's "in" right now is just ignorant.

p.s. Miley Cyrus is considered a rock singer too.
Should I base my opinion of rock music on her songs?

It's probably a song by dead prez called "Be Healthy" from the Lets Get Free record.
I wouldn't listen to them though, they're racist.

I'd embed the youtube video but I don't know how. Maybe one of you computer-savvy people will help a brother out.

I also have to take issue with the people who say they only like eminem because he tells stories or rhymes with passion, but no other MCs. This is the kind of blatant blindness that I hate about rap detractors. I don't think race can be discounted either conscious or otherwise.

The Best hip hop album of all time. If you can't at least respect this craft then you aren't an intelligent person.

Oh! Thank you very much. :D It was going to bother me forever.

Yeah, Andrew mentioned something about them being some kind of mad Black Panther offshoot rap group.

Its better then most poetry.
You can't honestly say that! Have you heard most poetry? It may not be to your taste, but saying you don't like poetry if you haven't actually read that much is like saying you don't like rap because of rappers like Soulja Boy

I don't necessarily hate all rap. Mainstream rap however fits into the stereotyping of being all about "guns and whores". I do like 90s rappers and modern underground rappers. My favorites include Notorious B.I.G., Tupac, Immortal Technique, or hell some of Weird Al's songs have great rap.

Then there's also rap-rock which I absolutely love when done right, like The Beastie Boys and Rage Against the Machine.

However, for drivel such as Soulja Boy, Lil' Wayne, and similar rappers, I just can't help but call them out for ruining rap in general.

So yeah, the OP makes some great points, even though I'm personally not the biggest Eminem fan.

Acutally, some of lil' waynes early stuff isn't so bad. And one of his most recent songs (well it's feat. Eminem, and it will be on Eminem's new album) is actually really good. He has produced some crap too though.

As with any genre, I dislike artists rather than genres themselves. To be sure, rap and country have a larger proportion of disliked artists than many other genres, but that doesn't make it right for me or anyone to dismiss the entire genre out of hand. Lupe Fiasco, Immortal Technique, Jedi Mind Tricks, Eminem, and Blackalicious are all great artists.

In a similar vein, even my "pet" genre of metalcore is home to more than a handful of artists I just can't stomach...you can keep your The Devil Wears Prada, thanks very much, I'll stick to my Killswitch.

In before people too intellectual to listen to rap because it is all about drugs and hoez.

I don't like any specific artists, but I listen to the occasional rap song. Especially older rap, this new stuff sucks.

I used to listen to some old hip-hop albums. I like the genre overall, but I've been completely out of the scene. I'll join the group :)
