Tetris or Final Fantasy 3 are the way to go buddy.

And to be honest, I hate pokemon too, but that doesn't stop me from playing it.

I find it a handy way of killing time.
You must have a lot of time and a shit load of money. ;)
'Fraid not. I'm poor. I just have a shitlot of free time. All of my games are gifts.

Is it cheating if I use my R4?

If so, have to go with pokemon, grandtastic gaming at its best :)

hmm...

I once killed off an entire car trip playing Sonic Chronicles. Possibly the best Sonic game since Adventure 2... and it wasn't even developed by SEGA XD (Bioware did the actual development, and they gave it an actual story X-x weird). You'll probably have better luck if you get into it, because it's hard to play when the car keeps bumping around and you're trying to attack using the stencil thingy and all...

Also,
Advance Wars (any, even though I suck *w*)
SMT: Devil Survivor (if strategy RPG is your thing)

Hell, if you have one of the older DS/DSlite's then I may be able to recommend a few GBA games, certainly including Riviera: The Promised Land, which still ranks as one of my favorite hand-held RPGs ever <3

I don't get around much with any major handhelds... mostly because they keep breaking on me. For example, it's really hard to play anything action-y on my DS now cause two of the buttons stopped functioning right. I tried dusting them out and everything... still nothing >.> Hell, my first DS had the bottom screen drop down on me, as in, the screen stopped working and rattled up and down whenever I shook the thing x-@ Try explaining that to tech support -.-

Pokemon, can't go wrong.
To be honest I absolutely HATE pokémon. xD
my hatred stems to that one day i somehow left my gameboy in an esky, my copy of pokemon gold not only lost it's save (and my level 9ty'something ho-oh) but lost its ability TO save. so i'll never go back, and i can't be arsed with the remake.

now, if i had 12 hours and a DS, which on paper won't be operative for 2 of those hours, [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_ds#Battery_life] i reckon a good metroid game would fill the time. its one of the few games i could stand playing for long periods of time far beyond the end of my daily runtime.

or before the battery runs out of course >_>

The World Ends with You.

Amazing replay value. I would totally complete that again.

Calumon: Kingdom Hearts. I haven't played the DS one yet. :3

Dragon Warrior IX was released recently, and it's awesome. SO GOOD
I've been wondering about this, so just a couple questions:
Is the customisation as good as they say it is? Are their many side-quests, guilds, or anything like that? And finally how big or long is it?
As far as customization goes, there is a ton of stuff to make using alchemy to customize your characters. There is also a WiFi shop that is updated daily and sometimes has special equipment. Then of course you get to pick all your characters' classes (of which there are 12), appearances and weapon specializations.

There seem to be an endless number of sidequests-- many NPCs in-game give you quests and lots of them have multiple stages. Plus sometimes there will be a special quest released through the WiFi shop. And then you have Random Dungeons, which there are literally an endless number of-- they also tend to have fancy special equipment drops.

So far I've played 40 hours and haven't beaten the main game, although I think I may be close (you can never really be sure with Dragon Warrior games because after I beat what I think is the final boss I'll probably be thrown into the DARK REALM or something). From what I hear there is a shitton of stuff to do in the post-game, and a few classes that can't even be unlocked until then.

I'm very pleased with my purchase of this game, I can tell you that much. Lots of stuff to do.

I'd try the World Ends With You. It's challenging and will last you the ten hours.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is another good one.

Nice, much obliged, I'll have to put it in my appointment book..... Seriously, I have an epic backlog right now, I'll pick it up once I fall back in love with the DS again though.

If I'm honest, there are a lot of DS games I haven't played and the ones I have I didn't like. So I would take a flash cart and play Mother 3.

Either of the FF Tactics or The World Ends With You.

I got bored of FF3 way to early in it and Pokemon is a strategy game that has been touched by its creepy uncle and never fully recovered.

Peggle is on DS... Is that actually a good game or is it just really addictive like most casual games?
OT:Most have been said, so I think I'm just reiterating. But for what it's worth...
Advance Wars (DS is best)
Mario games (RPG or 64DS)
Pokemon
Metroid Prime Hunters? (I love that game)
Final Fantasy (the strategy ones work the best on DS I think... Not sure if they're all strategy on DS lol)
Harvest Moon (seriously, those games are massive, and can be quite fun. Still haven't finished that Gamecube one...)

I think that's it from me.
Now I'm going to play Advance Wars some more. I only just "rediscovered" it today. Coincidence? I suck though, it's been too long...
EDIT: Fire Emblem! Man, I almost forgot about those... If you can play the GBA ones, I know they're good. I can't vouch for DS ones.
