It's a completely open survey...

I don't think we need Sherlock Holmes to realise this is a number of people playing a joke.

In fact I'm going to join them!

'Can stars sing?' *Yes*

EDIT: I am from Birmingham ¬.¬ It's a rather habitable place I think you'll find.
Which part? I'm from Wednesbury, so not too far, and it's a pretty shitty place really. There are some nice areas of Birmingham, I guess, and Coventry and Walsall are okay. The rest of the Midlands? Absolute rubbish. I was lucky to get out and come to Leeds for uni... not too keen on returning when I graduate either :p.

Anyway, on topic, I can't say I'm surprised, though I'm also intrigued to see what the polls would say in other countries, specifically the USA. And some of those scientific advances surprised me a bit, like being able to 'spray-on' solar cells. Some good stuff, and I hope the advances keep on rolling out, some of these could be really useful :D.

Bad example. Sherlock Holmes didn't know the Earth went about the Sun.

What is this i don't even

I really hope these people were trolling. That's fairly ridiculous.
They probably thought that they could see gravity because they can see the effects of gravity.

Interesting.
I don't agree that stars can sing just because they can convert the light oscillations into sound though.
I mean there's a machine that can turn "taste" into sound, that doesn't mean cheese can sing.

I really should've got the insect question right. They're doing the research at my university o_0. I never knew.

OK, first thought is that why do surveys always think they have grounds to extrapolate data from 3000 people into perfectly representing 60 million. No, it doesn't work like that.

Secondly, there MUST have been some amount of trolling. My guess is they asked a high number of students or something.

Yeah, that does sound pretty plausible.

People in the UK every 10 years troll the heck out of their official national survey and that carries with it a hefty fine for putting in incorrect information.
But it's a hot topic to question people on their religious status even if their religion is Jedi, councils/government don't have the time or money to call people up on it for obvious reasons. - I don't think its accidental that 1/5th of people think lightsabers are real and 'Jedi' is the uk's 4th largest religion according to the last census (no joke! ;))

So if we do that to our 'official' survey then the open ones like this stand no chance.

Ahh as a nation we're fueled on sarcasm, cynicism and apathy, not to say we don't have our share of idiots, but most of them wouldn't fill out this kind of survey 'cause their living in state funded birthing caves breeding super-mutants - Thats a question the survey missed...

This is the closest thing we have to lightsabers:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Rl3w8nG1kU&feature=related

And, oddly enough, we can see both the cause and effect of gravity. We can measure it, calculate, extrapolate it's effects. All are as good as actually seeing it.
Now, I wouldn't be surprised if that many people didn't know about the photoelectric effect, or how the absorption spectra works, or even the square-cubed laws.

EDIT:
Yes, I'm British, and doing AS-Level Physics

I'm from south Birmingham, the perfect part of south Bimringham that has almost no outstanding features, near a tiny place called Northfield.

It's pretty good here... a very good academy school 5 minutes down the road, Cabdury World only 20 minutes away, lots of green and all the chavs are foolish and incapable.

I get by here :3 but I plan to go to University in Stafford.

Even worse, that survey is horribly written.

The answer given to the question "Can stars sing?" is yes - because the radiation emitted by stars oscillates and those oscillations can be turned into sound.

bwuh???

That doesn't fit with any definition of "sing" that I'm familiar with.

Can stars sing? Hell no! Do they oscillate? Of course!

The quiz itself is far more retarded than any of the responses.

This.

If you really believe that 1/5 of people in britain are genuinely saying they believe in lightsabers, YOU should probably be going to get checked out. For a start 3000 people is really not many to make such a sweeping statement. There is no information on how these people were selected.
Mainly though, people in Britain who get confronted with a randomer shoving even a serious looking questionaire or a survey form in their face generally don't care enough to answer honestly. So when the questions are so laughable like 'do you think lightsabers are real' they either assume the test is a joke or otherwise retarded and intentionally put down stupid answers.

Ah, you're lucky then, you're in the good part. Try and avoid the northern parts at all costs, as I'm sure you're already aware. That's the bad bit. The further you get to the centre of the Midlands, the more screwed you are...

Yet more evidence to support my theory that rampant stupidity isn't exclusive to the States, assuming it's true.

Edit: according to posts here, it appears this survey isn't very valid. Never mind then.

I'm all too aware of that ._. My friends dad lives up that way so if I go see him I have to take a 30 minute bus into town, then a 50 minute bus to his flat... some of the areas we go through are downright dreadful, and the people manage to offend all senses at once...

Very much so, 'Sing' is a misleading term. Whoever wrote this survey needs to go read up on Loftus and Palmers experiments...

90% of brits when troubled by clipboard (or tablet these days i guess) wielding questionnaire types will come out with any old shit unless there being paid.

and 67.3% (sounds more believable with a decimal don't it) of all statistics are made up ;)

Light sabres exist, and is won't be a while till you see the headline "Masked Vader holds up a bank with saber and force choke"
