I get really shitty when people rage about you not using a mic. I am mute, how will I use a fucking mic, hmm? It is the reason I do not play left 4 dead or killing floor as much as I'd like, really sohuld not let them get to me, but it does put me off playing.
That being said I tend to use common sense instead of a mic, it works fine.
You're a mute - I'm jealous of you. I wish I could say to people "I'm a mute" when they want me to use a mic, that would then make them feel really crappy about always insisting on it. I don't like talking anyway, I try and do as little of it as possible. You're my new favourite person on The Escapist, and you even live in my country which makes me happy.

Ouch. I'm not mute, but I do have that stupid deafness-related slur (and a lisp! Go me!) that means people just can't understand me over a microphone - I won't pretend to understand what it's like to not be able to talk at all, but I do sympathise.

With that in mind, people that demand mics are usually the kind of people you wouldn't want in your team anyway.
It isn't that bad, I have a few great friends that speak sign language with me, and I can write really quickly =P. You are deaf or hearing impaired? I would hate that much more, wouldn't trade you.

Really, if you are going to play an online game that features co-op, could you please have a f@#king mic on and plugged in? I suppose it could be worse, but really... if you're playing online co-op.. put your mic on and act like a partner.

I suppose since I'm making this a topic and not just a complaint I should open it up to the rest of the Escapists out there for their opinions.
Sometimes, I don't want to hear someones voice every other second on how I should do this or do that, I rather do enjoy the quiet, but, yes I do enjoy talking with someone over a mike that requires teamwork like L4D or Killing Floor. I will agree with you on the point that people who join a game where saying it can save precious time or complete an objective is much faster than typing out ever could.

I'm hearing impaired (is that what the kids are calling partially deaf now? :p) - I can't hear some of the higher frequencies in my left ear. These happen to include some of the higher vocal range so kids, women, really camp guys, gamers using mics... I'm physically incapable of hearing them some times.

Of course, what I can and can't hear depends on what I'm doing, what mood I'm in and how much I feel like talking to people :p I'd be lying if I said it was all bad!

Some games it's helpful for...other games like silly fun bouts of TF2, allspeak just makes it fun....and amusing.

I think that in any team-based game, it's completely necessary. It's just aggravating to play with people you can't communicate with in a strategic game like Gears of War or something. Some people actually play for serious competition, and people who don't have mics make that a lot harder.

I have a mic, and almost never use it. I can't stand people who try to talk to you in-game over a freaking microphone. Why do we play? To sit down and have a nice chat, or shoot people/aliens/zombies/whatever?

Okay, yeah, you can "use them to give orders/heads up", but who the hell really does that? Outside of those 'clan matches' all the Asian (not being racist, just a fact) kids at my old High School played in, I never saw anyone use them for anything but mic-spamming and bitching.

Mutes are wonderful. I wish there were more mutes, most people use their vocal chords far too much for my liking. I hate talking to people on the phone for hours, with a mute there'd just be lots of long text chats or whatever instead, how awesome would that be. If you ever need an IRC friend let me know.

Back OT and the "mute all" button is the first thing I look for when playing an online FPS. When I play Counterstrike and I can see people's talk-bars flashing but I can't hear what they're saying, that is total heavenly bliss. The entire world should be mute.

I never use mics and I'm pretty damn good at games like Left 4 Dead. Say a hunter pounces you...well, you don't need to scream "I'VE BEEN POOOOOOOOOOOOUNCED!" down your microphone, the game actually tells me you've been pounced, so I can save you. In fact, I've been on teams where everyone was using mics, where I saved more people more often than everyone combined. Using a mic doesn't make you a better team player on Left 4 Dead. Not even on expert. I can tell if you want to avoid going through the barn. I can tell if you want to hide in a corner. I don't need to be told there's a tank behind me, because the nice, helpful music and my own awareness do that for me.

If anything, it makes me a better player. Why do I seem to be the only person who can tell the 'Sn1P3r_G0d1234' has been pounced without a mic?

Mics are a gift and a curse.

So the next time you use one. Flip a coin and see which of the 2 is most likely to happen
