There are good and bad sides to using a Mic.

On one hand, it can make your gaming experience more enjoyable - the ability to communicate with team mates and formulate strategies, or even simply compliment someone on a particularly generous, or skillful act. On the other hand, there will always be those who use their microphones as instruments of abuse, by talking trash etc.

I really hate the latter.

While I have experienced some of this, I don't really think it's that bad.... I suppose I could be playing the wrong games, but from what I know, you can't hear the other team during a match. Also, I speak well-enunciated English (most of the time, the rest is just swears), with a Canadian accent if any, so that probably saves me from a lot of what other people get.

From the sound of it I don't wan't to talk to you. Play with friends, or play with the knowledge that not everybody gives a shit.
So if you don't give a shit stick to solo and stop ruining the experience for everyone else by joining their game and going off doing your own thing.
I'm gonna have to strongly disagree and draw your attention to this post right here:

I agree. How dare people who don't have mics attempt to play an online game.
Damn them and their free will.
Note the bolded words and quit being a douche.

I dont even use my mic on xbox live nor do i have voices turned on because of the stupid 5 year olds playing games and screaming when you kill them, i can understand a 5 year old playing but not on a mic where they can scream when anything happens.

It happens on both co-op and versus and i find it just plain not worth it to have my ears bleed so i just play the game with no mic.

Um...Ok

I'm assuming you mean this on consoles as you can type while doing PC gaming co-op
Yeah but its still a lot easier to say down a microphone, help there is a hunter on me than typing it in on L4D.
Yeah all you'd probably manage would be "Help there's a hu--SHIT!" xD

the one thing that pisses me of the most is when people don't have a mic and want to play left 4 dead because a teammate without a mic in left 4 dead is useless a bot will know if you are pounced on or being dragged while a mic less teammate never will also say halo 3 team doubles why would you not have a mic there seriously for l4d and halo's doubles there needs to be a detector that wont allow you to play that game online or that playlist without a mic also it should make sure the mic notpure shit

I'm not being a douche. Just because you can do something doesn't mean it's a good idea or not a total dick move on someone's part. You can co-op without a mic, but I'm just saying it'd be nicer if you had one.

I actually have one but don't bother using it because I can never understand a word anyone's saying (I'm Irish so any hint of an accent and you might as well be speaking Latin), but I'm intelligent enough to know what kind of actions would benefit my team, making a mic unnecessary.

And did you ever stop to think that people played games to have fun, and not to take part in boring precision teamwork? If I wanted that, I'd enrol in the army. At least they don't complain about mics and the like...

You're missing my point. Go ahead and game to have fun, but why do you have to play a game mode specifically designed for interaction and co-operation if you intend to avoid that part of it?

I prefer not to interact with anyone at all.
Which is probably why online gaming and I don't tend to get along.

In certain games, yes it is essential. But it is a little jarring when parts of games that don't require much communication I get booted for not having my mic plugged in.

My current mic broke for no fucking reason and my backup has the speaker broken so I have to hear what my teammates are saying through the TV, which doesn't work very well.

L4D for example is game where mics are near enough mandatory to get good. Mics drastically affect play in a game like L4D so I can understand being kicked for not having a full functioning mic, where as games like South Park while still being team-centric don't rely that much on communication and yet this "mic-booting" problem is still somewhat common.

Bottom line, think. Do I really need someone with a mic? Or can I do it with a someone who is of perfectly equal skill or perhpas better.

Because it annoys people like you so much.

You draw it on yourself, y'no. :D

Some people don't use mics becuase of social phobia. They want to feel connected to others without actually having to talk to them. Not true of me of course.

Or, you know, you could get over it and find a different way to communicate.
And talking isn't a requirement. I've played plenty of online GoW2 games with a friend, and I never use a mic.
And guess what? There hasn't been a problem yet.
Applying the little intelligence the people in the world seem to have might just actually work.
You should try it.

Why do I even bother? Just came on here to see what people thought about using mics in co-op games and I get a bunch of crap in return.
