There's no way I'm gonna plug the headset in unless I'm playing with people I know well. Every time I've tried using a mic with randoms has ended in annoyance - kids, idiots, kidiots, people shouting racial and homophobic insults (despite me being white and straight) because they think it's clever, witty comments about my accent (apparently people on XBL have never heard a British person before?)... yeah, no. Not going there.

From the sound of it I don't wan't to talk to you. Play with friends, or play with the knowledge that not everybody gives a shit.
So if you don't give a shit stick to solo and stop ruining the experience for everyone else by joining their game and going off doing your own thing.
back off troll everyone is entitled to their opinion, and here i thought this was a nice topic to discuss

if you want to complain and ***** go to another forum we dont like people like you here

it helps when playing a game like Left For Dead
Indeed. Whenever I try to use a mic on TF2, nobody listens, and we all die. But on left 4 dead, the team work and participation really requires vocal communication.

I don't mind if the person doesn't talk, as long as they LISTEN.

The best example I have is when playing L4D, I specifically said "Don't go through the barn, people like to hide there". My teammate, not listening to me and my other teammates who agreed, when into the barn. Surely enough he was pounced and we had to save him.

I have a simple solution for this issue; I only play with friends. We all use mics and I don't have to worry about random thirteen year old asses screaming ridiculous and nonsensical obscenities over every little thing that happens.

Indeed, I boot anyone from any game Im hosting if they dont have a mic.

A number of people on my friends list do the same as well for the same reason.
You see it is people like you that destroy my enjoyment of the game. I can play just as good as anyone with a mic, so why should I not be able to play with you?

Really, if you are going to play an online game that features co-op, could you please have a f@#king mic on and plugged in? I suppose it could be worse, but really... if you're playing online co-op.. put your mic on and act like a partner.

I suppose since I'm making this a topic and not just a complaint I should open it up to the rest of the Escapists out there for their opinions.
What I have found is this...

The idiot who don't us mics at all. If that is the case, I will text them and ask them to use their mic, if they do not reply/don't plug in, I boot 'em.

If they are using a mic and seem like a cool person, I add them to my friends list and we will usually play again. I now have a pretty full list so that if I want to play co-op in something I don't have to do it with complete strangers.

But overall I agree with your statement, if you are going to play co-op, use a mic.

If you're talking about consoles, fine.
However on pc, especially in rts games, a mic is only really necessary if you are doing l4d on expert or something, and even then thats only if you're going to play with complete randomers

It is not always needed really, and sometimes mics break and they cant just get one. It realyl depends. You mentioned co-op which does have a greater need for it, but really, it just depends. Dont need a mic, but if you dont, make sure you pay more attention, and perhaps lower sound/music volumes while having voice on high to atleast HEAR the mic havers. A game like Left 4 Dead Id rather they have mics, but if they show they pay attention then I can forgive them. Long as you realize there is a hunter on me and get it off without it taking my death, then you're good.
People dont talk often anyways, so its not like mics make a difference ALL the time.

I get really shitty when people rage about you not using a mic. I am mute, how will I use a fucking mic, hmm? It is the reason I do not play left 4 dead or killing floor as much as I'd like, really sohuld not let them get to me, but it does put me off playing.
That being said I tend to use common sense instead of a mic, it works fine.
Your a mute?
