I have several favourites, to be honest, but I'll name a couple. I grew up listening to The Beatles, but it's hard not to like them. I discovered Nightwish and Within Temptation through a good friend of mine chilling out at her house for the night. I have a few more but I can't be bothered to type 'em all out.
My favorite band is Dream Theater and I discovered them through my parents who are big fans as well. Got started when Train of Thought came out but now I listen to pretty much all their albums.
It's hard to say. I have so many 'favorite' bands, and have been introduced to them in so many ways.
I discovered Steve Conte/The New York Dolls/The Crown Jewels through the work of Yoko Kanno and the SeatBelts.
I got into Gnarls Barkley and CAKE because different coworkers brought the CDs in and played them while we closed up the bookstore I worked in.
The Dresden Dolls were introduced to me by my roommate, but I didn't really listen to them until I watched the video for 'Coin-Operated Boy'.
And Sugarcult's 'She's The Blade' just happened to be among the music videos by the Saline Project that I was searching out and watching on YouTube (along with 'Like Toy Soldiers' by Eminem, and 'Somewhere Only We Know' by Keane). I started listening to other stuff they'd done, and fell in love with 'Worst To December' and 'Back To California'.
It was like that snare drum kicked open a way to my brain, I absolutely loved that song. I listened to it around 30 times that day. Then I got myself a best of and listened but wasn't digging too much of it. Then I bought all of Bob Dylan's early records and listened to them all day long. His albums have to be listened to as albums to make sense, great fucking records his first 6 or so.
My older brothers were really in to the punk scene (they were teenagers in the mid-late 80's) and I really liked this 'Bad Religion' thing they were listening to. As unlike most of their other music I could understand what the singer was saying. 20 years later, still my favorite band despite a constantly growing pallete.
Well, I discovered Avenged Sevenfold because I was playing some perverted flash game. I thought one of the songs that was playing in the background was really good, and after doing a bit of research, it turned out that the song was called Almost Easy, and was performed by A7X.
One time I was playing late night online Warcraft 3 with my step-brother (we were in the same room for strategy), and the TV was on some late-night Australian music station (Rage).
Anyway,
came on, and I instantly fell in love. Now I own all of their albums, I've seen them live, and I've racked up days-worth of time listening to their music.
Same here with guitar hero, say what you want but that game is damn good for finding your favourite band. I found my favourite band, rage against the machine, in guitar hero 3, and about 5 months later I was in town and I saw their cd, so I decided to get it, damn happy I chose to get it.
Well, my favourite band is Nirvana. It was hard to ignore Smells Like Teen Spirit. However, I realised they had more than a couple of good songs through Guitar Hero. I'm also a massive Pearl Jam fan and, like you, I found them through the radio. However, I am discouraged by your song choice. I think you'll find this much more awesome.
