Opinion on ME1's Mako

Personally I've found the Mako to be fun at best and tolerable at worst and it made the universe seem very large. I think the handling was fine for me because I used the keyboard for the control though, I imagine the sensitive turning with a controller would be significantly more difficult and less fun.

Did anyone else enjoy the Mako vehicle sections and were you using a keyboard or controller?

edit: I found that each location on a map had at least 1 easily traversed mountain path to get to it, I as well as others, just didn't have the patience to look for it. Which might be a good thing considering open land is alot less open when forcing a player to take a particular path... or it could just be bad game design.

I thought it was quite fun using either, but the Hammerhead was a major improvement. Was it called the hammerhead? I think it was.

I was fine with a controller. Sure they should have put more into the environments that you were driving around in, but over all I was disappointed when it wasn't in the second.

I was using a controller and I felt at ease using the MAKO--it drove almost exactly like a warthog in Halo. I also thought that the MAKO exploring was really fun. There was nothing to complain about, in my opinion. It's just move, shoot, and using the jets.

I couldn't stand it the amount of times I died due to the way is controlled. I almost stopped playing the game because of it.

Meh. I managed to get it stuck atop a support beam on the Sky Bridge. The thing controls like it has no mass, so I was never real fond of it.

I was a pro with the Mako, sometimes I'd just drive around for hours exploring the scenery, I got like 100% on all the planets. The handling was fine.

It was good, if a little frail. The handling thing was ok when i worked out why i was going wrong (trying to turn when one side had no wheels on the ground and then spinnig when they grip)

well i haven't gotten round to ME II yet so i cant compare to the hammerhead but the Mako was pretty fun with mouse and keyboard though the unexplored planet terrain was really messed up it was like all cliffs and massive steep slopes and holes the mission driving sections were pretty fun and well suited to the mako

it was a pity EXP was halved getting out all the time to fight things got old after awhile and it got munted by the hook worms all the time

I love it. It's a rush to drive off a cliff then boost at the last second for no damage :D

Using it on the return to the skybridge was one of the greatest moments ever. Missles and energy balls flying at me as soon as I get out of the gate, I'm driving it at a 75 degree angle up the side, and boost, causing me to crash into one of the armatures knocking it off the bridge. Blast the rocket troops with the cannon while boosting over the incoming rockets, then just driving away with one last long-range blast to kill the final armature.

Yeah I miss the Mako.

I lost alot of time once because that fiddly bastard got caught in something and couldn't get out, though I guess that could be an argument for console games lacking debug modes.

Back on topic I liked It, but would much rather see It replaced with the hammerhead which was much better in terms of control and more fun to use. Maybe add in a machine gun along with the main cannon and It'd be perfect for a climax racing section like on Ilos with the Mako.

I had no particular problem with the vehicle itself.

It handled fine. At least, it did while using a mouse and keyboard. I've never used a controller for ME1, so I don't know what that's like. A lot of people seemed to hate it though.

My problem was with what you did while in the vehicle. Driving around featureless palette-swapped planets covered in annoying slopes. Vehicle combat was boring as well, just a matter of sitting and picking at targets from a distance, occasionally reversing to avoid projeciles.

I was damn glad to see it gone in ME2.

At least it added a bit of an exploration aspect, albeit one that SUCKED. I was just about to feel epic, storming an alien base when the Mako hit a pebble on the track and went careening into the air.

I liked it. I didn't see what the fuss was about. Controls were decent, sometimes frustrating but very usable. The vehicle was a bit bouncy as well, but really now, who cares?

It made the world bigger and explorable, that's what counts. Most importantly it changed up gameplay a little. ME2s trimmed universe was just dull after a while. Corridors can only interest me for so long...

I've never played ME1 but if it's anything like the Hammerhead from ME2 it's the worst vehicle section I've ever suffered through in any game. Poor controls and no save points are bad enough but throw in glitches and enemies that take WAY too long to kill and you've got a disaster.

I played it on the xbox 360 and had no real problems. It needed a lot of tweaking I think, but removing it entirely was a terrible move.

It was a good idea just badly executed. The planets were lifeless rocks for the most part so exploring in it felt tedious. Like people have said it handled like it were a balloon not a vehicle and I hated how if you were on a hill you weren't able to aim properly at anyone below you.
With a bit of work it could've been good but I'm glad they removed it in ME2

I've played ME1 about seven times. In some games, the Mako handles without issue, in other games, it's like my input only has a vague influence on what the Mako actually does.

Plenty of people have suggested that ME2's Hammerhead was a better vehicle and I'm all for that. Although ME1 had a much bigger feel with the explorable planets, the Mako's poor handling and the topography made the planets frustrating and tedious. If they'd been designed as levels as with ME2's Firewalker packs, they'd probably have been much more fun.

I have to admit I had a similar problem with some husk spikes, just a touch and it flipped the mako but that was a singular case for me so I don't hold it against the game.
