mass effect to me was overhyped. I bought it for the hype around it, yet I haven't gone back to play it anytime recently and still haven't beat it which is not common for me.

Gran Turismo: $40 Demo. Argue otherwise, but no car tuning even.

Halo: I Love Halo, I drank the soda, and have some action figures, but I can see how people hate the "in your face" approach. ... I love Halo.

Two Worlds: Any hype was too much. I play it as a parody game and enjoy it, but expecting anything more... lol!

Madden: Same thing every year. They could charge you $5 for all the changes they actually make. Roster Update 2008! Pre-Order now!

Fable: Agreed! Good game, but lasted all of a day.

I think that any game that doesn't meet your expectations is pretty much by definition overhyped. Even if that hype is limited to the back of the box. If done for a good game, hype can be the excited cries and you brandish the game for the first time to your friends. I remember bringing Guitar hero 3 to a party and for once actually approaching some degree of cool. I've seen similar things happen with SSBB, or with MGS4 (though not at a party).

I like hype, and I'm willing to put up with disappointment, since for every Revenge of the Sith, there will be a Dark Knight.

Hype is annoying.

Especially games like Halo 3. I completed halo 3 in 3 days and I now I use the disc as a Frisbee. Anybody noticed how overhyped games will last 3 months? Like GTA IV, halo 3, haze etc.

Haze lasted 3 months? But I agree with the latter. I didnt buy into the GTA4 hype and Im happy. There about 15 used copies for each console at the local Gamestop. I really liked Halo 3, so that was my choice to get it and enjoy it.

Iron man can't kill kratos because well...KRATOS IS A DEMIGOD. Who kills gods and probably humps those big fucking monsters when your not looking, And probably shagging any women he pleases.
Not to get off topic but Iron Man did kill Thor...and he's a full fledged god...

It seems to me that any game, no matter how good it is (but this especially applies to big name games like Halo or Soul Calibur) will inevitably live up to whatever hype they get for someone and won't for others. Take Metal Gear Solid 4; I personally think it is a fantastic game. The length of the cutscenes do not bother me whatsoever, I knew that was what I was getting in to. I happen to think the controls are good and I love the story. MGS4 lived up to the hype for me but obviously others disagree. I wanted that game for the conclusion of one of my favorite stories ever and I was not disappointed.

On the other hand I despise the Halo franchise. If someone asks me why I don't have an Xbox 360 the first answer I usually give (mostly jokingly) is "I won't get one because to do so would be to associate with the Halo series and I won't do it." I happen to think the first and third games were merely mediocre and the second one was fairly bad, but what can I say to the millions of people who think they are the best games ever created? For many those games did live up to whatever hype they got (and they got a LOT as people here seem to agree).

Hype is of no consequence to me, I like or dislike a game based on whether or not I enjoy it or don't enjoy it, not what a million strangers, a magazine run by strangers, or a website run by strangers think.

This could be a very limp attempt to hide the fact that I really enjoy the Halo series, which piror to release had unfathomable amounts of hype swarming around it like a swarm of pissed off foul mouthed locusts with bad acne, homophobic impulses and sexual frustrations but whatever.

Crysis - it doesn't look half as pretty as anyone says

One of these is real life. The other one is Crysis. Pick which is which.

It's not impossible, but there's no way in hell you can do it at a glance.

Left one is crysis? The picture is a bit sharp, The grass has no deviation, and the shadows arn't on par as much as I would hope. The moutains are meh not enough AA, and the gates not beat up when the rest of the house looks it.
Alright, that's as good as any game has ever looked. This looks better than all of the upcoming games, also - so I'll ask again, what do you think looks better than Crysis? The only game that looks remotely as good is Far Cry 2, but even that isn't quite up to the standard Crysis set.

Think about this, Crysis can have the worlds' greatest graphics, but did that make it the worlds greatest game?

If my memory serves me right I think daiktana was pretty hyped, and that was a pretty crappy game.

In my experience there are two kinds of hype. There's good, controlled hype and bad, over-anticipation hype. Good hype is when the developers release details about the game's innovations at a steady consistent rate and they don't make promises that end up not being fulfilled at the time of release. Gears of War had a good amount of hype to it and it ended up delivering because Epic Games did not wait until a month before release before starting to build up the hype. They released a steady flow of trailers and news leading up to the release. Fable had loads of hype but did not deliver because Peter Molyneux thought it would be awesome if he told everyone everything about the game at one time, and "everything" turned out to be every idea they had hoped to implement, such as the "tree-growing-back-after-being-chopped-down" news. I am one of the few haters of Fable because I got excited by the "living, breathing world" and was let down by the "consistently green until the very end of the game world". What I'm basically trying to say is hype can be good, and hype can be bad. It all depends on how the game news is released and your state of mind.

Hype is as bad as the people who create it, normally, hype is started by the people who already think the game is brilliant just because its from that series or developer.

Worst examples of hype I've seen have to be:

1. GTA IV- I've long since given up on GTA
2. SSBB- I normally like fighting games but I'm pretty certain that it can't be as good as some people have said it was.
3. The Orange box- Besides Portal (which was a one time round sort of game in my opinion) this game was not worth the £50 I paid for it.
4. Halo 3- Need I explain this one?
5. Turok- Despite the negetive hype I've heard about it, the game is not THAT bad (It could have been worse...it could have been like FEAR). And (contrary to what the talented Mr. Yahtzee says) is functional even if it is irritating at moments.

Halo, Super Smash Bros., Assassin's Creed, Devil May Cry 4.... take your pick, they were all overhyped. I'd say Soul Calibur 4, but Starkiller aka "The Apprentice" is awesome to use.

Yah SSBB is overhyped. I really dont like it single player, but I want to beat it eventually to unlock the characters. If I got rid of it, though, I wouldn't complain. I might just do that and put it towards Boom Blox.

GTAIV: I've seen better stories and character development on the back of a cereal packet.

SSBB: Re-skin of the others.

Halo 3: What's going on!?

Gears of War not overhyped? When that thing came out it was the only thing Xbox users were talking about. So when I checked it out I was incredibly dissapointed. The campaign was some decent fun, but had a very retarded story (the watchmen meets aliens without all the plot). Since the main draw was in the multiplayer I gave it a try and found out it was an annoying shotgun fest. I mean couldn't they have just fixed that bullet lag with a patch?

I'm not trying to force my opinion on you, but the are some facts in that argument.

I didn't say crysis looked like shit i'm just pointing out the differences in the pictures, And telling you its not real life yet..
