Black Sabbath. I like Ozzy, but really I find Sabbath far too slow to get into very much.
I think a lot of people feel a need to like them, and even if they don't, say they do. I don't mnd some songs, Paranoid for one example, but really I'm not exactly impressed.
You might not like Sabbath, but they pioneered Metal,Doom Metal,Stoner Rock/Metal, they also have been experimental with their work, therefore they cannot be overrated.
They can when people start killing themselves in their name. Anyone can be overrated (by fans), but this does not mean that they're not good or have done good work.

METALLICA AND NIRVANA RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Although most of the new pop-shit sucks bigtime.. Like Beyonce and such...
There never was good pop with the exeption of one...

As much as I am a metalhead, only MJ made good songs. He sang about thigs he experienced, like discrimination and such. Every other shitty pop "musician" sings about love and has 5 divorces.
Prince was good, too.

this is pretty obvious... ALL pop punk, ALL emo, ALL nu metal, and finally ALL metalcore. If you like any of these, sorry, you are in the wrong. period. also, MOST rap is garbage. But the biggest pieces of overrated tripe are thus:

Linkin Park
Papa Roach
slipknot
Cradle of Filth
JAY FUCKING Z
Rolling stones
Aerosmith

fuck it, it's four in the morning, i don't feel like listing any more. REMEMBER KIDS: just because you like it, doesn't make it good.

A local radio station was talking about this recently, and they came up with Kiss as the most overrated band ever. I agree. They basically do one good song, and even that's only alright. Mostly, they're just a gimmick, a throwback to glam rock with a touch of 80s attitude. But it's dated and not in a good, vintage way.

I listen to a lot of music, probably more than you so don't even go there.
Let me guess, you consider your tastes to be eclectic.
Where did I say that?

My Father has a huge collection of records all the way back to the 40s and is sharing them all with me, so I say I know a lot.
So because you listen to music from the 40's you have listened to more music than me? You don't even know what I've listened to. How do you make such a bold statement? How many genres of music have your explored? How can you say with any sort of quantitative evidence that you know more than I do about music?

You know what, forget it. This is just becoming a pissing match.
Oh shut up! Your the one who started all the crap saying "It sounds like you are one of those "rock snobs" who thinks they know everything about music, but in reality don't really listen to much at all", which pretty bold in itself.

How about you complete your sentences before someone asks what the hell are you talking about, then this will never happen again.

This is a controvertial one but Nirvana. I don't mean to say that they're bad I'm just saying that they were over-rated. In terms of defining a genre they are very important but there aren't exactly a lot of good Nirvana songs. Maybe there would have been more if Kurt hadn't painted the wall with his brains, who knows.

Linkin Park. I don't think I need to even explain this one do I?

Led Zeppelin. Kind of like Nirvana in that there are people who think they're the best thing to happen to music ever but really they don't have all that many good songs. Good, sure, not great.
I agree that Nirvana are overated, but I blame the millions of angsty teenage fans for talking about them like they shit golden eggs.

As for Led Zeppelin: I get the impression you just havn't listened to them enough, Led Zeppelin IV is one of the best albums ever made...You may have to skip Stairway though...
Skip Stairway!? Excuse my french but you should go die! (I'm not very good at speaking french)

I don't think Black Sabbath is THAT overrated. Led Zeppelin stole a lot of their thunder back in the 70's. A lot of people can tell you who Jimmy Page is, but probably won't have ever heard of Tony Iommi. Same goes, to a lesser extent, with Bonham and Ward.

Then again I have heard people praise the shit out of Sabbath, just out of courtesy. It's one of those bands that you're not allowed to dislike, especially in the stoner rock business.

My most overrated band would be Nirvana. Three albums and a 12-gauge breakfast really made that band immortal.

U2 is another band that, to me, has always dwelled in mediocrity, but somehow Bono is considered a demigod by the press, and his appearance is worthy of the world stopping to a halt, only to gasp at his miraculous existence.

How is Judas priest overrated? Last 5 times I brought up there name I got a "who?" response, and they have a very nice average song quality. Halford and their drummer are damn awesome.

Also, Black Sabbath? Really? Because it's slow? That's kinda the point, what with it being HEAVILY blues based rock. Which is now known as Doom metal. Which is slow. I understand not liking the style, but how does "I don't like slow music" make a band that plays slow music overrated? Oh god, "THE NEWS SAID SABBATH WAS = SUICIDE MUSIC!!!" That was one lawsuit. To Ozzy. About a song that was on the other side of the record the kid was playing. The kid was also depressed. But, of course, it was epic music that killed him.

I agree with Slipknot 100%. It's just a bad mix of death metal and... something else... to me at least. I perfer my death metal to be... talented... or at least really brutal(see Death, Necrophagist, and Suffocation).

Nirvana is remembered for 2 reasons. Moving a genre into the mainstream, and... that guy... who killed himself... his name escape me... As such, it's overrated, but not if you look at all the music it HELPED to popularize...

Metallica vs. Megadeth people... Be quiet. Now. We all know you can't argue if you are both too stubborn to concede one point to the other. Now go hide in the corner of fanboy-dom. While I poke you with this stick.

Led Zepplin is overplayed (actually just stairway...). I would say overrated, but most people know one song. And don't like it that much anyway....

About Prog. Prog is Prog. It's... not that complicated or difficult to play, but some people really like it. Respect their taste please.

Popular music... of course. The second somebody says "best anything ever" it's overrated. And that happens a lot to shit.

Iron Maiden... not really.... Number of the Beast is overrated, but most of the fans can't seem to tell me what any songs on "Piece of Mind" are. Therefore, I render there opinion moot.

I would like to say most popular classic rock. Why? Because it has become the cool new thing to like. And as a result, I am up to my ears in people telling me how Van Halen is worlds better than anything else. Ever. I know this doesn't represent most people, but god do they piss me off.

In short (and as you see, I am all about short post's) it's all relative. If you have heard of them, they probably have a raging fanboy who claims they are "teh best". Even if it's generally overrated by people, most isn't. People have little musical attention. They only seem to have an opinion on 20 or so bands at a time. So, most stuff isn't overated. The tools can't rate it, if they don't know it exists.

About to be flamed,
Nadlice.

I love how people try to start arguments and get all offended when it's simply someone else's opinion. There's been bands listed here as over-rated that I quite enjoy, for example: Queen, Pink Floyd, Disturbed, Slipknot, Eminem, Korn, etc.

This doesn't mean I got angry and up in arms about it, music is a purely individual thing and I respect your opinion and the fact that you dislike/think a band I like is over-rated.

That being said, although I do enjoy Nirvana I do believe they're over-rated because of what Kurt did. They were decent in my opinion, not the gift from God some people make them out to be.

*clears throat* Revelations, my favorite song by maiden =]
i have never seen a band that has done what maiden can do, when you see Flight 666 you really get a scope of how amazing they are. You see them go into countries in south america where they have never toured, and they sell out concerts to double the capacity of where it is held(Columbia).

And my contribution to the thread is Metallica. I like their music, but it all sounds the same to me.
