Actually as you become a real music enthusiast you grow out of thinking one band is better than another. I like what I like and Im unapologetic about it. It's people more than the bands that bother me. I find myself trying to suggest post-rock to metal/rap/country fans to try and get them out of the mind set that all good music sounds the same. I don't know I just don't look at things like that. Maybe it's because my Dad has a progressive rock band and raised me on YES, Jethro Tull, Peter Gabriel and Todd Rundgren so now I listen to everything that sounds remotely interesting like Explosions in the sky, This will destroy you, Sigur Ros, Kyte, The Antlers, Timaria, rap you never heard of like Binary Star and Chino XL, mainstream stuff like EverClear, Blink182, BoxcarRacer, BrandNew, Radiohead and OLP.
Point is don't limit yourselves.
Thank you. My system is pretty much the same; I listen to whatever the hell I like, no matter whether people give it good reviews or not (I only like Stairway to Heaven because I actually like the song, for example, not because of the cult following, and I like several My Chemical Romance songs, because they're either cleverly written, funny in that sort of dry, bitter way, or sound good), so I work it all out by myself. Trust me, if somebody like, hmmmm... Peter Andre came out with a good song (actually, come to think of it, Behind Closed Doors is pretty good), I'd listen to it. I only really start to like a band as opposed to songs by a band after I find several songs I like of theirs. An example of this is Aerosmith; I loved the song 'Don't Wanna Miss A Thing' from the second I heard it, but I didn't actually start liking the band until I found other songs, like 'Mama Kin', 'Back in the Saddle', 'Walk This Way', 'Love in an Elevator' and more. And still, I don't glory-support them; I only like the ones I like, and I only listen to those (and the others, once in a while, to see whether my opinion has changed) and any new ones, to see if I like those too.
I like both Metallica songs and Megadeth songs, because really, it's not the people that I'm a fan of, it's the music. I don't care if Mustaine likes/hates/wants to get back in with the guys from Metallica, I care if he can make music or not.
And I'm also going to say that I don't like every Queen song, or every Elton John song, despite liking them as artists and the cult followings the former has.
I dislike most club or pop, but only because most of it's shit. Once in a while, a good one comes out, and I listen to it. Hell, even a good hip-hop or rap song can get me (several Eminem ones are good, and I listen to them accordingly).
Anyway, my long-winded, rambling post is basically conveying the same message: don't limit yourselves, because you can miss out on some awesome music. And, really, that's all that matters.
Addendum: No, just kidding. Listen to everything except that Disney shit, because it's soiling the good name of music. Hannah Montanna is NOT rock, she is shitpop. Same for those pussies the Jonas Brothers. If they marketed themselves as what they were, maybe I'd give it a listen once in a while... but they don't, so I'm making a stand.
