I don't really get this whole "overrated" thing. Everyone has different opinions on what they think makes a good movie.

A lot of the time whenever I see people claiming that a movie is overrated, it just seems to me that the movie didn't suit their own personal tastes. Then they get all bent out of shape when other people actually enjoyed it and they can't understand why.

I'm not too keen on these "overrated" threads, because usually they are way too full of people thinking that just because they didn't like a film/book/game, that film/book/game must be overrated.

Goodfellas

Godfather

Scarface

Shawshank Redemption

For the record, I love everything Quentin Tarantino has done. I am very surprised at all the hate his films are getting in this thread. Oh well, I have better things to do than defend my opinions. Basically no one is stupid, or uneducated in anyway for liking a movie, it is all just subject to opinion.

Oh yeah, I hated 300 too.

Goodfellas. I just could not keep myself interested in it. Maybe I should watch it again though, I might have a better opinion of it if I watch it the second time round.

This is just personal opinions. Of course there's always going to be someone who objects to someone elses opinion, that's just the way things are.

I watched what might have been the remake. Regardless I almost pissed myself laughing at the end. The poor bastard. I hate to use the word but FAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLLL.
The only two things I liked about the movie was when...

...that zealot chick got shot by that wormy clerk and when they were driving around and you saw that enormous six-legged tentacle creature walk by.

But the whole "internal human confict" was a bunch of hogwash: That one trucker immediately converts to Jonestown mentality because he saw a mutant spider........Right.

Any movie people go "You never saw ____!?"
Mostly just because that is annoying. Godfather, ET and Aliens are the main ones.

Avatar! 4 stars for entertainment and effects maybe, but not 6, it's no masterpiece.
Godfather part 2: it's very good, but shut up! it's not nearly as good as the first one

Thank you. Thank you so much. I could not have said it any better. If you don't enjoy a film, that's fine, but don't go around questioning why others do. It's about personal taste.

Wow, I'm surprised that Avatar is getting so much bile. No, not an original story, but the hype wasn't about the story, it was about the 300 million dolloar effects budget, and if nothing else, it did look damn good.

I would have to say the film guilty of being hyped up shit are:
The whole twitlight series [books included]

but my #1 hatred for film...
Juno.

Hated that movie, and the attention it received made it seem that much worse.

Avatar.

Or really anything by James Cameron.
I agree on this 100%.... or 500%.

Seriously, his movies are just rehash or just not very good.
Aliens? True Lies? Terminator? Terminator 2? The Abyss?

-m
Eww, No. Never seen it. Don't Like it. Don't like it. Never was interested in it.

It's not that they're bad, it's just that they're very overrated.

Saving Private Ryan, really.. The camera work is good and all, but it doesn't get close to portraying war realistically. There's not really any character development outside of Upham, and the plot is rather trivial. It doesn't hold up to movies such as Full Metal Jacket, Apocalypse NOW or Platoon.
I'd go so far as to say those other three are also seriously overrated.

I'm going with 2001: A Space Odyssey. An absurdly drawn out and pretentious work in which scenes mercilessly drag on and on and on, way after making their point.

I know I'll get a lot of shit for this, but: Almost anything Quentin Tarantino puts out.

Just out of curiosity... which ones are exclused from your hate?

OT: Cameron's Avatar and Titanic. And I've never seen a whole Godfather (not even the first one) because I couldn't stand it. I'm sorry, it may be good but it really didn't fascinate me last time I checked.

Search bar approved guys!

What movies have you seen that you thought were really overated. I've seen a few although the most recent example would have to be Hurt Locker. It's been called one of the best war movies ever but when you compare it to other war movies like Saving Private Ryan its just plain boring. Compare it to THE war movie, Apocalypse Now and it's a stupid, drivelling, unrealistic excuse for a film.

What movies do you consider to be overated?
Thank you.

Really, I would like to put a blanket statement over any movie that wins or gets nominated for an oscar, but I'll cite specific ones.

A Beautiful Mind, Million Dollar Baby, Hurt Locker, Slumdog Millionaire, The Aviator (Sorry Martin, I still love your work!), Titanic, The Constant Gardener, The English Patient, Precious, Lost In Translation, Crazy Heart, Walk the Line, THE BLIND SIDE.

Strangely enough, these arent: No Country for Old Men, A Serious Man, Crash (I love multi-story movies), The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Inglorious Basterds, Up in the Air, There Will Be Blood (although it moves VERY VERY slowly, it makes up for it in Daniel-Day, cinematography, and music).

Oh! Also: I think Fight Club is tremendously overrated.
That too. What makes it worsse is that the movie has become the poster child of self-obsessed, teenage "anarchists". Get a grip. Both the movie and the novel doesn't know what it is talking about half the time, with the characters just ranting about nothing. Durden is only shooting his mouth off...*see what I did there*?

Cept aliens that was not overbloated or trite at all and had a good scifi script.

But with titanic and avatar under his belt anything after aliens signed.

*grumble grumble* You Escapists who put The Godfather without an explanation as to why your listing the greatest film of all time.... Second thoughts, I could get banned over that argument.

On topic: I gotta say the New Star Trek, been meaning to see it for a while due to how much my mates rave on about it. It might be the Star Wars geek in me, but it just left a bit of a "Meh" feeling when the credits rolled. I dunno, it wasn't bad, but I wasn't sogooditwillblowyouawayandchangeyourlife wow'ed as I was lead to believe by others.
