I'm going with 2001: A Space Odyssey. An absurdly drawn out and pretentious work in which scenes mercilessly drag on and on and on, way after making their point.
Full Metal Jacket, and Platoon, perhaps.. But Apocalypse now? Really? I've spend hours re-watching and marveling at that piece.

I saw Avatar on here many times and I want to establish it is not over rated. In order for something to be overrated it must have more fans then haters which it does not. All Avatar has is a handful of retarded fanboys/girls a heavy does of mild tolerance and a shittone of hatred. Bottom line I have Avatar and James Cameron needs to be stopped.

Oh! Also: I think Fight Club is tremendously overrated.
Ninja'd! Glad I'm not the only one that thinks so though.

WALL-E and Toy Story are some others.

Twilight is painfully over-rated, I don't hate it but I strongly disagree that is one of the greatest horror movies.

Iron Man, definitely Iron Man. Hardly enjoyed it the second time around.

A lot of the anime movies, not all but most.

Anyone remember how apeshit people went for Doom? Any of you actually sank so low as to watch that piece of crap? GAMES DO NOT TRANSLATE INTO MOVIES WELL. Except for Silent Hill and Resident Evil. They are awesome.

The hurt locker. It is so predictable, formulaic and immediately forgettable that I cannot possibly comprehend how it won oscars against the movies it was competing with.
Also, whats with the Tarantino hate, just boiling it down to pop culture references doesn't really accurately portray the quality of writing, IMO

People seriously think it's a horror movie? It's nothing NEAR a horror movie! For God's sake, I write better horror! I just finished writing a Sailor Moon fanfic that's a million times scarier!

It's a horrible movie, but not a horror movie. The only things horrific about it are the legion of creepy cultists that obsess over it and the quality of the writing.

I know I'll get a lot of shit for this, but: Almost anything Quentin Tarantino puts out.

I'm with you, I think most of his films are bullshit pop culture references. Making a reference to something else doesn't make you clever or artistic, it just means you've seen something else.

Apparently Pulp Fiction is good because of how the story was shown out of order, whatever, its basis is rubbish.
Quentin is a genius for a lot of the same reasons as Kubrick. He knows all the film story conventions, and breaks em all wherever possible. Not so much in Pulp Fiction, but take a look at Death Proof or Inglorious Bastards. These are movies that just say, no, I'm not doing it the Hollywood way; however, they manage to do this while throwing mad respect at some of the pulpiest genre's around. It's just wild when you thing about it. This heading in two apposing directions is precisely what makes his films hard to stomach. It's also their appeal.

Avatar.

Or really anything by James Cameron.
I agree on this 100%.... or 500%.

Seriously, his movies are just rehash or just not very good.
Youre kidding, right?

I'll have to say Quentin Tarantino's films, sans Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs.

I"m going to avoid the obvious one (TWILIGHT!!!!!!!) and say Napoleon Dynamite. Seriously, I hated that movie with every fiber of my being when it came out. Me and my mom rented it, didn't get through it. A week later, my fucking teacher played it in the classroom so I had to get through it... Furk...

OT: The Hurt Locker and Fight club. Like someone else said The Hurt Locker pales in comparison to Apocalypse Now.

Because he doesn't conform to marketing doesn't make him a genius, its makes him a controversial person that doesn't like marketing.

His pop culture references really bug me though.

Avatars story was really just pocahontas in space.
With all the money and effort put into it the story really let it down.

The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile.

I've said it once and I'll say it again; Frank Darabont sucks.
I really don't understand what people see in those movies. They're as cliché and cheesy as you can get.

Gladiator

It was fairly entertaing historical drama but the only reason that it got the attention it did (including taking home best picture) was because nothing else came out that year that was any good.

If my choices were The nutty Professor 2, Gone in 60 seconds, the adventures of rocky and bullwinkle, Mission Impossible 2 or Gladiator, then yeah i would have it voted the least annoying movie of the year too.

I don't really get this whole "overrated" thing. Everyone has different opinions on what they think makes a good movie.

A lot of the time whenever I see people claiming that a movie is overrated, it just seems to me that the movie didn't suit their own personal tastes. Then they get all bent out of shape when other people actually enjoyed it and they can't understand why.

I'm not too keen on these "overrated" threads, because usually they are way too full of people thinking that just because they didn't like a film/book/game, that film/book/game must be overrated.
And this too. And for God's sake people, just because you don't like something doesn't mean you have to be an asshole about it.

Avatar, Titanic
I am going to have to agree with this. Titanic was way too long and I got bored of it before I could finish watching and Avatar did not deserve to make $2 billion and receive a best picture nomination. Do not get me wrong I thought that the world was beautiful and well constructed and the action was spectacular when Cameron finally got around to it. However, the story, the Dialogue and some of the acting and characters were just not up to par. Decent movie, but didn't deserve the incredible praise and success it received. Titanic on the other hand... lets just say I agree with Yahtzee when he said something along the lines of "The second half of a work can be filled with diamonds and start teleporting hookers into the room but if the first half was such rubbish that I couldn't force myself to get to the second half then it is still a shitty work overall." Not exactly what Yahtzee said but an amalgamation of several things he has said in ZP and it describes my feelings perfectly.
