No Health Bars.
It has been one of the worst ideas ever, how is having your screen looking increasingly fucked up better then a bar that clearly shows how close you are to dying?
Yar. Anyone else excited for Halo:Reach?

This.
Only real gripe I had about Resistance 2...I miss split-screen deathmatches :(

Single-Player BOT matches were pretty sweet too. That was the reason I held on to Duke Nukem 3D on the N64

What if health potions had never been invented? You would die, and the evil villian would be free to rampage around, due to your utter lack of health potions. I think that is enough ranting for now.
I believe this happens in Demon Souls :p
Just about! Demon's Souls is a bloody brilliant game, honestly. But yeah, instead of potions you eat some grass... generally, you eat a lot of grass in that game lol.

OT: Making puzzles super fucking obvious. Whether we're talking Zelda boss fights where they have a huge glowing target and obvious uses for your brand new ability or item, or if we're talking about any given hybrid FPS, let's say BioShock, where they make whatever you need to get glow. Brightly.

Don't get me wrong here, I think it's alright to have an indication of what you should go activate or hit or whatever, but comon! Drop some hints and make the player feel like they're using their grey matter rather than letting us players blindly go through the game smacking all the glowy things. A game that does a wicked job of letting you sweat it out is Penumbra. That's a pretty clever game.

HUDs.

I like when tehy are gone, and you have to guess how many bullets are ina gun, or how many shots you can still take. makes the game more.. challengeing.

Once again, I have to say I enjoy these. They add an immersiveness to the game where you feel like you are the character, and that you're helping someone else, instead of constantly just going from place to place slitting up everything around. Don't get me wrong, there are some terrible escort missions, but those typically have to do more with the AI than the mission. As long as the escort either can handle themself as long ass you don't let them get swarmed, or realizes they aren't a combatant and does everything in their power to avoid combat themself, I'm fine with it, the problem lies in non-combatants getting cocky brawler AI.
Absolutely, I agree.

Problem is 90% of escort missions contain that horrible AI.

Ask anyone who played Metro 2033 was there a part they hated and they'll say protecting the AI partner from the acid blobs.... man that level was awful.

Good escort mission: Hmmm... Dad in Fallout 3, because he's invincible!
agreed on both these.i used to fucking DESPISE getting escort as a map objective online back in the day..the VIP's were horrible =[
I have to add another post for this one. That part of Metro 2033 was a fucking *****. Took me, oh, 5 lives at least to figure out how I might be able to do it - I tried running through fast and I tried staying back and sniping, tried throwing all my grenades... finally pulled out the shotty and blew the stupid ass spawn things up. Still took several tries after I figured that out, and wasted all my damn ammo... but made it. That AI partner is dumber than a sack of nails. Why can't he wait!? Didn't help that I was playing Hardcore difficulty. It wasn't even a hard game at that, except that part and a couple others.

So yeah I agree escort missions are almost always complete shit.

Graphics in Online games, don't put to much stuff in your levels that more stuff you have to transfer over the lines.

Exploding barrels. I hate exploding barrels, unless I am fighting my way through an industrial explosives or munitions factory. They make no sense!

Why did they put all these exploding barrles on the playground? Who wanted the exploding barrels all over his office? Who set up all these exploding barrels in a pattern to take out your enemies? Why did your enemies decide to take cover behind the exploding barrel in the first place? They kind of piss me off.

I didn't realize those were 'puzzles', good sir... nor do I think they are.

OT: Definitely morality systems, or choices that promise to change everything. The only game I played where my choices changed everything was Drakengard, and if I remember correctly, those were pretty subtle choices, yeah? Haven't played the game in a while.

I have to agree with the people who said not having health bars, I just recently bought Modern Warfare 1 after forgetting that I don't like CoD. I remembered about 5 minutes in when my screen looked like put a drop of red dye in my eyes when I got hit and I had no idea how much further I had to go to live. Regenerating health is slightly annoying because it incredibly lessens repercussions for something like rushing mindlessly, destroying strategy, but I have seen okay implementations where it regenerates REALLY slowly and there are only a few places where you actually have time to rest and recharge. Classic Health bars and health packs will always be best.

Regenerating health REALLY gets on my nerves. I want to see HOW the enemy survived that barrage of ammunition. And online competitive games that have weapons that are undeniably better than others. Extra marks off if you have to unlock or upgrade the better weapons. That's one of the biggest reasons that I prefer Team Fortress 2 over other shooters: the unlockable weapons are balanced. Like, the Direct Hit rocket launcher does more damage and the rockets travel faster than the default launcher, but loses some of its important blast radius.

Regenerating life to an extent. Even though I hated the core game, Far Cry 2 at least got something right with the health system. You get four segments in a health bar, and it only regenerates the segment your heath is currently at.
The Chronicles Of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay had a similar system if I recall correctly.

The topic says it. What are they?

While it may not have started with CoD4, I'm really starting to hate unlocking weapons and other equipment by leveling up. This stuff just needs to go away.

I liked it better when I could just choose which weapon I wanted when I spawned, and didn't have to wait a month or so to gain access to a gun I like. What is the purpose then? Look, I've got my gun that I've been leveling up for, I guess all that time up to now was just a grind to it. Good thing, I certainly wouldn't want to have fun playing this game. And I know it might mean that everyone just chooses weapon A over B, but if everyone is choosing the same weapon, doesn't that just mean there's a balancing issue?
Health re-gen
God I hate it

Oh and non realistic bullet damages, i.e. every fps.

Ok I've assembled a list:

Achievments, unlocks, regenerating health, lack of split-screen coop, QTEs, moral choice systems, ranked online multi-player, DLC, customization that is only aesthetic, romantic subplots, audio logs, ...

To be continued with edits.

It's not as prevelant as it was 10 years ago, but since I started a game with it the other day, I'm going with swimming/water levels. The game I started was Tomb Raider Underworld (it was 4 bucks new and I was bored) and very first thing, I'm jumping into the ocean, with no idea where to go, everything looking alike, the camera being no help since it seems I end up right back where I started from and getting motion sick from it.

But yeah, ever since SMB I've hated water levels.

Projectile firing enemies hiding behind hordes of weak, easily destroyed enemies.

The biggest verdict From games I've played is Sonic Unleashed. I swear, I just attempt to get gaming experience by preforming the same, most effective combo while my health slowly drains away. If one of the weak enemies so much as pokes me on the nose, I flinch, then I get nailed by said projectile enemy's attacks.

I don't die constantly to them, but it's like serving poisonous puffer fish. You try to work around the toxic insides to get to the food, and the smallest mistake will cost you.

Title screens; why are they necessary they don't add to the core experience of the game, especially in shooters. If I'm playing MW2 I don't want to see that 'click start button' every time I boot up the game it can just go to the game mode selection screen for christ's sakes.
