I agree. It gets so much hype for being 'deep' and 'philosophical' but when I watched it I wondered if I was seeing the same thing. What philosophy was there? "Robots have been keeping us in a virtual reality! kill they ass!"kitsunefather said:
And apart from the main three characters, the others in that little resistance cell got little if any characterisation (you had the treacherous one, and that kid with the unhealthy fixation on his simulation-girl, and that's about it). I hate practically everything with Will Smith in it. He pretty much keeps playing the same damn character over and over in every movie and they all start to blend together eventually.
And I don't don't know if this movie was ever praised or is considered overrated or not, but I loathe the Dune movie from the eighties, I'm a Dune fanboy and saw the movie after reading the original book. When I saw it I had no clue what was going on half the time, hell the movie skips about half of what happened in the book, not to mention half the characters look weird as shit.

Avatar. The only good thing I have to say about it is that it looks nice. But a movie looking nice does not make it good; people seemed to have forgotten that. The plot was unoriginal; it was Dances with Wolves IN SPACE. The 'protagonists' were unsympathetic. The main character basically betrays humanity to get laid in my opinion. That and the barely veiled message that humans are bad because we don't live in harmony with nature; if there's one thing I hate, it's getting preached at.
Lord of the Rings, the sheer amount of plot holes drove me insane. Don't give me "you have to read the books" or "You have to know some more of the lore" to fill in the holes, it's 9+ hours worth of movie, if it can't stand up alone by itself with that amount of time then perhaps they could have cut out some parts. Like the elf going rambo in a battle taking out battle elephants and whatever.
Seriously that part just made me rage, I know they're supposed to be elite and all that, but why wasn't he and the other elite groups killing more like that?
And Gamdalf is supposed to be a mage but the only real spell I saw him cast was magic flashlight. How about a firewall? A confuse spell, something that makes him actually LOOK like a mage. (yes he knocked the weapons out of their hands at one point, and force threw Saroman around but come on)
Beautiful? Sure. Epic battles? Some. Weird plotholes? Yes.

Also the only reason Ledger got so much praise for the role of The Joker was because he died before the movie got released. I never really thought of him as a great actor before and I certainly don't now. Nicholson was a far better Joker. Nicholson walked that fine line between gleeful sadism and complete and utter insanity perfectly, Ledger just did insane like any other person reading the script would have.

It wasn't dark, it wasn't genius. It was just a bunch of random, scientific theory (in the sense that it's made up heavily) applied to some emo storyline about characters that fail to reach the audience.

Good idea, but the shooting scenes and guard fights ruined it. They should have done something else with the mind, such as having a nightmare, something lucid, or even perhaps something involving an inane dream sequence. The world is just too "logical" in a sense when it comes to the dream state of mind.

(Sigh) I'm sorry for doing this--and I'm sure I'm about to annoy many people--but I feel I must speak. I agree to a point on the elves--or rather, elf. If Legolas can do all these amazing stunts, why were the elves at Helm's Deep being slaughtered? Shouldn't they be just as good? However, they weren't at the elephant battle (Pelennor Fields), so that's why he was the only one taking them out.Snotnarok said:

OT: I like the legions of people on the pages before me don't like Avatar, and The Twilight series. Just don't sit well with me, they both seem to be lacking something. Oh right its called interesting characters. I had always thought that movies of their sort were supposed to carry something interesting and engaging but they didn't, oh well.
Still, it doesn't change the fact that Hot Fuzz is possibly the greatest movie ever and therefore cannot be compared to anything except Shaun of the dead (And possibly Spaced). (I know I'm being single-minded, but everyone's single-minded about the things they like)Delusibeta said:

Oh, and 28 Days Later is completely worthless. I still hate Kane the most but only because it's the most lauded of the overrated crap movies that get on my nerves.
To anyone who finds Avatar to be preachy, hypocritical and utterly stupid, know that it pales in comparison to the end of Cameron's The Abyss. Abyss goes from seriously awesome to garbage in the last 20 minutes. I get sad just thinking about it.

- The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile: People always tell me how brilliant these movies are, yet the plot is as deep as a puddle and the portrail of good and evil is like something out of a Saturday-morning cartoon.
- Every Quentin Tarantino movie post-Pulp Fiction: Mr. Tarantino, you're a fabulous director when you're not totally spooging all over your own fanboyism.
- Gladiator: The action scenes were horrible, the CG scenary looked horrendously fake and Joachim Phoenix's performance was laughable. I prefered 300 by a mile.
