I think the wight thing is ridiculous. I was horrified to go on some site which said, "Fat people should be banned from cons/shouldn't be allowed to cosplay" I can't believe some people are so ignorant.
Yes, if you're very, very big you could do better to stay away from very skinny, revealing characters. Although, who has the measurements of any of these game/anime/cartoon people?
I don't think how you look should have a major part of who you cosplay as, as long as you like the character, feel comfortable in the costume and have fun I don't see how it matters.

As you can see, I'm huge and I thought I made a good Freya despite the character being very slender as opposed to me. Dress for your size and shape and you can look lovely.

The only thing that really pisses me off in cosplay is when girls take male characters and make them into really slutty female versions. They look like prostitutes and probably don't even know who the character is, just want to tart it up and have loads of nerds falling at their feet. ;_;

Some of those weren't so bad. The worst, of course being the huge fat guy with a beard dressed up as Sailor Moon. Ugh.

Meh, I don't mind if cosplayers are over-weight, as long as they actually do some work on the costume and it isn't just streamers and sweatpants. Just because someone is overweight, they shouldn't allowed to enjoy something like cosplay? Even if they worked on their costume? That doesn't seem fair.

THE DREADED MAN-FAYE!
That picture made me terrified but it was also hilarious that someone actually did that.

Ultimately, I feel it doesn't matter what people do so long as the damn clothes FIT. I hate seeing fat people try to squeeze into outfits way too small for them...and skinny people who can't fill out their costume are just as bad. It's sad whenever I see the uber scrawny guys try to cosplay their favorite buff action star and they just bought the costume online. They look like little boys drowning in fabric.

So yeah, my vote is just for people MAKING their own costumes and tailoring it to their proportions. XD

You don't have to be the same race/height/look/eye color of the character you LOVE in order to dress up as them. Quit being so judgmental, OP. Let people have fun.

I'm gonna break this down for you to better inform your cosplay decisions.

1) Overweight person cosplaying a character who is not overweight - BAD.
2) Person cosplaying character of opposite sex - BAD

but, BUT, there is one glimmer of hope for you yet.

3) Overweight person cosplaying a character who is not overweight and is also the opposite sex - FUCKING HILARIOUS.

You and your girlfriend need to switch costumes. Like, right now.

I just wanted to say, you look very cute like that. That's a really good cosplay =]

OP: The only thing that annoys me is when people put zero effort into the cosplay and then you can't tell who they're supposed to be. If you want to cosplay good for you but please at least put a tiny bit of effort into it. Just so we can tell which character you are.

Oh god, this. It's one thing to cosplay as a character who has a slutty default outfit...but I hate when they turn a non-sexualized character into...just oy vey. >.< LEAVE MY CHARACTERS ALONE, K'THX!

Also, you look adorable in your picture, hon :3

the problem with bad CP is that the CP,er most likely chooses something bad for their physique (like a fat guy CPing Ikari Shinji or a skinny guy CPing E.Honda)
or in the worst cases this:

That last one is genuinely scary.

OT: People should cosplay to suit their body type. As in, not like ^that^.

The way I see it if your dedicated enough to make a costume of a character you love then more power to you its pure fandom. With that being said being black I find it extremely difficult to cosplay as the white haired androgynous JRPG and anime characters that I like. I am currently working on a MK9 Noob Saibot costume though.

Does it really bother you if someone is in a bad costume, or is too fat to be a waif with melons stuffed in it's clothes? If they're enjoying themselves who are you to judge their efforts, or choices? It's not meant to be a fashion parade, it's a bit of fun.

I think if these people have the confidence to go out dressed like that and have fun with it, then good for them. Even if it is an overweight man in an Ivy costume. If I don't like looking at it, I'll look at something else.

And you're being very mean about that Yuna-costumed-lady. She's not even a bit hideous.

Thank you so much! I was very pleased with it, even though I had my doubts at first but I'm glad I went through with it. I love the character though, which always helps and can sometimes make your cosplay look better. [/quote]

Ung, about people not making much effort... There was about 3 Miku's at the Manchester expo who just had the wigs (quite cheaply made too) and their normal clothes on. It's understandable though, maybe they couldn't find a place that stocked them in their size, or maybe their order hadn't arrived yet. I bought a lolita dress nearly 4 months ago and it has come yet ;-;

I don't mind if they want to dress like a character who is a bit slutty, they are quite common in media to be honest :p But when they slutty up a character (of any gender, I saw some pic of a girl as Rogue, but in a teeny top and skirt. She'd have looked so much nicer in the actual outfit) it gets my goat!
I like it if they put a feminine twist on a character. If anyone saw that female two face, you'll know what I'm on about, she was fantastic.

The biggest no no I can think of is having a bulky costume sticks out into the crowds, so when they approach you have to sort of flatten yourself into a wall so you don't get poked in the eye.

Also, more people need to cosplay as Nyan Cat.

Look how happy he is!

Why do you use *th'* instead of *the* ?

And no, if you are fat, you shouldn't cosplay non-fat characters. Nobody wants to see fat people in tight clothing. Fuckin' hell, that's just gross.
Cosplaying already overweight characters is cool tho. Actually, you should be slightly overweight, if you wanna cosplay as them - or at least that seems to makes sense to me. And it shows you are both aware of your weight, and that you don't mind, rather than that you are a sad, sad person wearing tights.
Even if this is a bit harsh, I have to say I agree. It looks like the skinny person your trying to copy has let themselves go.

Take my avatar for example, it would be funny if you dressed up as pikachu and went with a beer in one hand and a cig in the other. Rather than trying to be a 6ft person trying to play pikachu straight.

Instead of donning a GA outfit go for kingpin for example but if you have your heart set on GA then by all means.

I have to say, I have never seen a cosplay person and thought "wow, that looks good" I just feel embarrassed for them

That. Is. Amazing! It'd be difficult to do that in public though unless you had enough speed to make the flag billow though. His face is slightly terrifying!

This. Seriously, cosplaying is about having fun, not putting people down because their body type doesn't mesh with their character of choice. And yes, people are being dicks about the Yuna cosplay.

They only way to do a cosplay "Wrong" in my opinion, is to have absolutely no knowledge of who the character you're cosplaying is. IE. The people who do it because they were told "You'd make a great so-and-so," or because they know that character gets a lot of attention at conventions.

Cosplay is supposed to be honoring the character, because you love them that much. To do it for attention or because someone told you you'd get attention is just the opposite of cosplay.

Fat/skinny, wrong hair styles/races/genders/etc, wrong height (you'd be surprised how many times that comes up) and so-called "closet cosplays" are all the wrong types of criticisms to make.

Honestly if I want to criticize someone for their cosplay, it would only be if they had no idea who they were cosplaying as. And it happens more than you'd imagine.
