This thread is rapidly approaching the YouTube comment asymptote of stupidity.

How many people in this thread are either
a) discussing about like/dislike of Palin or
b) defending / knocking her for her mistweet

It's about the F**** DICTIONARY ADDING IT.
That is what's offensive, Palin is irrelevant to this thread.

Why do I only ever hear about dictionaries when they're trolling with shit like this?

Oooh two people used a word, let's stick it in the dictionary. Let's face it, no one has EVER used the word "britnification".

I don't mind the English language changing over time as new terms come into use, but one person used a word once. That doesn't make it an new official word. People have been using "ain't" for years now in everyday conversation, yet it doesn't get put in. But apparently they're accepting any random word that someone famous makes up.

this is madness! ANYONE can make up some stupid-sounding word that doesn't exist and would they get recognition? NO, because its stupid. but since she's a hot politician, she gets free stupid words added to the dictionary! "suggesting a general sense of 'reject'"? BULLSHIT! that is the worst definition i have ever heard for the worst word i have ever heard!

And with that
I don't think I could agree with you more.

It's astounding, the veracity with which our culture celebrates stupidity. It really does make me want to go colonize Mars...
I'm sorry but I must disagree with you, Mars isn't far away enough. I propose colonizing a few of Jupiter's moons, I doubt the idiocy could find it's way that far.

I'm an English Major and currently a senior at Temple University. Early on stuff like this used to really frustrate me. However, as I studied English more and more, I came to understand just how much of a butchering and mish-mash of other languages English. It's illogical to the core, and it's one of the hardest languages to learn simply because there's little rhyme or reason to it.

My point is getting up in arms and snobby over a major political figure unknowingly creating a new word is just a waste of time. How do you think most words were created to begin with, especially in the English language?

Good point. I'll take your note into consideration when building the rockets.

We should never praise people for being illiterate, but considering how this generation is aggressively ignorant I'm not too surprised something like this happened, however I will say this. I died a little inside when I first heard about this. *edit* actually I died a lot inside, where can we sign up for the mission to mars?

No, I don't think typos should be added to the dictionary. If I can't have semigogue, people shouldn't get refudiate.

Also, Palin running in 2012 would be the best thing possible for Obama. Believe me, Democrats everywhere are hoping and praying that she'll win the nomination.

No, I agree with you here. While our languages are living languages and change as we speak it, I dont think we should reward bad literacy and verbal skills.
In the eyes of a linguist, there is nothing like "bad" language. What the most people say, is common use, so its part of the language. Its not a evaluating science, it is observing.
So its merely enough that a word is used or printed enough, to embiggen the vocabulary of english :p;)

I don't like Sarah Palin, but I'm all for inventing new words, even if they're combinations of already-existing words

However, "refudiate" isn't a particularly good word. It's not that easy on the tongue (Re-foo-di-ate or Ree-fuddy-ate?) and the definition it apparantly has seems a little pointless, given that the two words it combines adequetly describe any situation Refudiate could be used for on their own

Therefore:

Hooray! New Word

Boo! New Word is Sucky
