Stratagies are another one of the PC's specialties. Rome: total war is great and I've heard good things about Sins of a Solar Empire and Supreme Commander (also, Spore isn't terrible if you want a casual game).
Yeah, but one of my friends bought Spore and took it back soon after, from what I've heard , it gets fairly tedious

misconceptions about PC gaming. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.67044?page=1]
Better just make sure.
If you wanna check your specs, go to the start menu, find run, and type "DXDIAG".
Or if you use vista just put it in the search box and hit enter.
You can then save this info as a text document, and post it up here.

Suprised no one's mentioned the old fallout series. Pretty much a whole new world for you if you're going for PC gaming. What they mean about the 5 gigs of ram is that unless you are running a 64 bit version of windows or linux then your comp will only use a maximum of 4 gigs so that's what you should shoot for. Itt'l run with any amount of ram over the nescesary, but won't really USE all of it if it's a 32 bit OS. In other words it's not that you are'nt using enough ram, you're probably using too much

DO NOT START WITH SIMS GAMES.

They will kill you. Believe me, I am a Sims2 addict, and it killed my comp to have it on there. Steam doesn't even REGISTER now.

Try the search function this topic has been done to death, there are probably six or seven threads in the past month that read just like "I just got / I'm trying out system X what does everyone recommend"

Or you could try google, there's a lot of info about new and old computer games on google.

@ Danny Ocean
Read it, thanks, it really kinda helped with my insecurities about my comp, but I can find run on my start panel, btw, I'll find out somehow.

Any of the Total War series. As long as it's ROME.
Oh come one, Medieval 2: Total War was pretty awesome. I personally liked it better then Rome, though you are right: The total war series is AWESOME. I can't believe I forgot about it! I own them all!
ROME was the first game I ever got for my first PC. I did try all the others but found them to be far more tricky to get the hang of. I've never really found a game that comes close to R:TW on the PC.

Although Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis is fun.

Quoted. For. Truth.

Also, World in Conflict, CoD4, and even if you dont go and spend a shitload on the Valve collection, at least buy the orange box!

Also, go oldschool and find Homeworld.

Civilisation 4 complete edition,

Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War complete edition (I'm not entirely sure of the proper name extensions, but for both those games you can get everything in one cheaper box set).

Painkiller

Red Alert - it's free to download.

Sid Meir's Pirates! It's so cheap it'll be a crime not to buy it, arrgh.

Black & White 2.

I recently bought The Witcher:Enhanced Edition & I'm thoroughly enjoying it, it's one of the best RPG's I've played. Unique & refreshing.
Try to import the uncensored UK/European version. It's presented in a much nicer package & has boobies! Seriously though, tit's aside it's the superior, definitive version & you won't have to faff around downloading mods & patches.

But there's so many different games to suit different tastes, it's horses for courses.

Well if you like RTSs, Company of Heroes is a must-have. World in Conflict is worth looking into as well. Total War series, as has been mentioned. Civilisation 4 if you're interested. And of course: BATTLFIELD 2. Seriously.

No one's mentioned Freedom Force yet? Awesome game. Silent Hunter if you like submarine sims. Homeworld and Homeworld 2 can be found on Amazon for about 10 bucks each. If you missed F.E.A.R. or PREY on consoles then those are good as well (and so much better on PC). The Dawn of War Platinum Pack is the one with all the games from that series in it and is totally awesome. Has anyone mentioned the Diablo, Starcraft, and Warcraft series' yet? Because each can be had in their own respective Battlechest for about 20 bucks each. If you like Sim City type games then Tropico is quite a hoot. Also TRACKMANIA: Nations can be had for free off of Steam and is one of the coolest little racers I've played in a long time.

Oh and GT: Legends. GTR 1/2. For some racing sim love.

And the Neverwinter Nights Diamond Pack has all of the expansions as well as some custom made modules (Kingmaker). The Icewind Dale series is fantastic for me, as is Baldur's Gate. but not for everyone. The first of the SIN episodes is pretty good and comes with the original full game. A treat for those who have never played it is the original Half-Life (HD or Source versions are available.) They may seem a little dated by today's standards but are really quite fun (along with Opposing Forces and Blue Shift expansions which let you play as either a soldier responding to the Black Mesa crisis, or Barny; the hapless guard on duty.)

(Sorry I can't really stop once I get going)

Another thing you'll notice is that new PC games are $49 as opposed to $59. Gotta love that.

It has been said before, but get yourself steam installed and get the orange box. Which I guess would be in the Valve complete pack. Some good games for PC there, and you should be having a lot of fun after the download time.
However, if you want an RTS then you should get Starcraft. I don't know if it is worth waiting for Starcraft 2, as you will have a long time to wait.

Do not... I repeat... Do not buy games that are console ports. Learn this now before you make the mistake. Only buy games that are developed for PC and primarily for PC. If you get a port, you get a poorly made, unoptimized, stutter fest with tons of glitches that simply don't get patched.

Now, if it's a PC game that gets ported to console, then it's not a big deal. You'll learn the difference in time. Mainly, games that you'd think are made with PC in mind (mainly FPS, although this is not always true), then they are safe to buy. Otherwise, don't bother.

As for games, tons. Not so much a ton right at this very second, but many are coming out in the next few months. I'll just make a list of games I enjoy/are coming out that I am looking forward to.

Civilization 4 WITH expansions
Galactic Civ 2 WITH expansions
Age of Empires 3 with or without expansions (with is better, if only for more variety)
Company of Heroes... but ignore online play for a bit. Game is severely imbalanced and has been metagamed to death.
Medal of Honor Airborne (surprisingly good, albeit a bit short)
Orange Box. You'll thank me if you are a fan of FPS.
Call of Duty 2 and 4 (3 is console only, sadly)
Farcry 2 (when it comes out)
Red Alert 3 (when it comes out)
Brothers in Arms... the new one (when it comes out)
Oblivion (must experience it despite it being incredibly drab and dull after a while)
Neverwinter Nights 2 if you're in to a D&D-esque game

Those are just off the top of my head.

Oh!!! How could I forget FarCry? Good call!

Painkiller's been said by someone and that's awesome.
Uuuuummmmm, Serious Sam. Max Payne. God, too many games to list.

Just FYI, I don't live in a cave, all the bolded ones I have played on my 360, Orange Box is probably worth picking up on PC though, and if some of these games have good mods it could be worth a second look.

Yes, Oblivion is a must for pc, simply because of all the mods out there. Most of them are quite crappy, but the ones that aren't (like jojjo's New Frostmourne sword, to name one) go beyond what even the folks at Bethesda thought up for Oblivion (in a good way).

But, I am curious about why you bolded Far Cry 2....

EDIT: What EvilEngineNumberNine said about the aforementioned Far Cry 2, I concur
