Do not... I repeat... Do not buy games that are console ports. Learn this now before you make the mistake. Only buy games that are developed for PC and primarily for PC. If you get a port, you get a poorly made, unoptimized, stutter fest with tons of glitches that simply don't get patched.
I used to be absolutely convinced of this, but as of late, things seem to be looking up. Off the top of my head, the PC versions of Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed are quite excellent, Mass Effect being noticably better on PC. You still need to be careful about your ports (Gears of War), but the console port business isn't nearly as bleak as it used to be.

Of course, this is probably a moot point anyways, because he's coming from console gaming, which means any games that would be ported to the PC he'd already have available on the console.

Oh, and if you like RPGs, The Witcher is definitely a very good game. Go for the enhanced edition on Steam. They re-recorded all the dialogue, and it makes all the difference in the world.

Yeah, the PC port of Mass Effect was good, better than the console versions even. You can't automatically shitcan all console ports.

I'll try to recommend a wide variety of games that you would enjoy. Some of these games are rather old, but they are all fantastic and they truly show some of the best aspects of their genre.

Freespace / Freespace 2 - Both of these games are simply stunning. If you have a joystick it is even better. But for a space sim, it's not that bad if you don't have a joystick.
Oh man, me being a space-sim fan, how could I forget these? Have to agree with Superfriend here. These are two, admittedly old, but amazing titles worth picking up.

5 gigs of RAM...Are you running a 64-bit OS?
Like I said, I'm a newb at PC gaming, I don't really have a gigantic computer that sucks out people's souls through it's disc drive, I'll upgrade later, I CAN run STALKER, the recommended RAM for that game is 1 gig, and my system meets the other requirements, so I'll be fine, and all you PC gamers, please don't kill me, I'll upgrade after I get suggestions okay?
Actually, that's not what they meant. They meant that you did major overkill on your RAM. I'm not sure that you are even right about how much ram you have. I've seen people put four GB of RAM in a computer for 64 bit Windows but not five GB. 64 Bit Windows is a higher level of Windows than 32 bit (which is what the majority of people are running). 32 Bit Windows will not even use more than 2 GB of RAM, so unless you are running 64 Bit Windows, those extra 3 GB are not even being used. If you can, I'd return the extra three GB of RAM to whoever you bought them from and use the money you spent on them for a really good video card.
