I beleive this is true, because of the new outbreak of console gaming has stolen the light from pc gaming. modern pc games are becoming less popular because of all the flaws that are in vista. Therefore, a lot of game designers are releasing their games on consoles instead, such as the new civilization game being released on the xbox360 and ps3.

...B)Home PCs and consoles will become the same thing. Consoles will have so much power that they will run OSs, and people will use them for all of their home computing and gaming. PCs will still be prevalent in offices, and laptops in schools (especially the college scene).
Atari already tried that.

This is the first PC Gaming is dying thread I've seen since I joined, how often do these pop up? I hope to God this is a rare sighting for escapist users because I hate these threads so much - telling people to pull their heads out their asses so much gets annoying after a while.

I hope this isn't a sign showing that things will get worse...

It's not fair to call console guys jerks for posting and argue PC is the superior platform in the same post. Both PCs and consoles have advantages the other does not, if this is not obvious to you: get over yourself. I am fortunate enough to have both and wouldn't have it any other way.

May I introduce the indie gaming scene? Really, consoles will never have as much of a flourishing indie scene as the PC, with it's many tools, and it's ability to give the tools that consoles never can. If you wan AAA titles, go to consoles. If you want quirky games that no-one's heard, but is fun never-the-less, then get a PC.

A decent PC won't really set you back. I have the latest PC Powerplay in front of me, and a decent motherboard, with a Core 2 Duo E4500, a 8800GT, 2GB RAM and a 320GB hard-drive will only cost you $1000 (AUD), the price of a PS3. And, this'll last you for the next 4-5 years, not counting the ability to place another graphics card or something.

Seriously, PC gaming isn't dying. It's just moving in another direction.

The problem with the PC is that you consistently need to upgrade it, and being the tight arse I am, I just stick to older PC games.
Consoles, on the other hand, are buy-and-it-lasts-you-more-than-6-months in a way, providing an absolutely certain chance that your graphics card won't melt if you play a game like COD4.

Anyway, PC gaming is NOT dying, it's just got a lot less popular, as people like their money.

That's my thesis, in any case.

It's pretty simple to dissect.

Consoles are PCs. They just have one set purpose, gaming. You have to buy them AND a PC because you still need a PC for PC things. Or, you could spend less money and be able to do games and PC things.

Guess why consoles take 5 years to upgrade? They're PCs. At the time they were made, they were top of the line PCs, and while PCs are always upgrading, consoles stay the same. They have to wait until the next Uber-Topoftheline upgrade that will last for the next 5 years, one that PC gamers have had for 2 years by then.

Vista huh? Don't use it personally, nor would I find a use for it for the next year or two perhaps, XP is fine and will play most anything at the moment.

Hmm, as for PC gaming dying, I don't think it will, consider that there's a huge catalogue of games there already, for the most part easily accessed. I know, when people talk about PC gaming dying, this is more in refrence to the percieved lessening of big releases of recent date and in the future. Just remember though, there are so many games out there already that many people just haven't played. It's never too late to go out and search for a copy of Red Alert, Fallout or any of the old Lucas Arts games. And far more besides.

For the present, I think I have to think of the likes of MAME, and other emulators, obviously not -quite- legal, however, my point in saying this is, everything comes to the PC eventually, whether by port or emulation or mod, it'll end up there in a few years after the current batch of consoles are long gone.

All will be devoured and returned into it's gaping maw! While everthing ages, it can only grow as it consumes the flesh of the departed! And it shall remain unto the end, and until that end it will merge, devour, and consume, until there is no more distinction between the great beast that is the personal computer and those pale mockeries of it's changing and incalculable form!

Where the hell does this myth that it take $4500 dollars to get a decent pc come from? damn they must have seen you coming and changed the one to a four with marker pen while you had your back turned.

Well, I suppose, any company that advertises as selling gaming PCs (ala Alienware) will usually have these monstrosities as their prime showcase. I've yet to see a bundled ready made PC like that I liked, and that wasn't hideously expensive too.

Any site/company that offers a tick the box for what you want type thing is my preference, Komplett is a favorite. ^^' Otherwise buying the individual components is pretty easy.

The same thing has happened every time a new gen of games has been released since the PSX came out. PC becomes gimped for, about, a year or two and then the only games worth playing are released exclusively on the PC because the consoles simply can't handle what the PC's can. There are other things as well, like the fact that RTS simply play clumsily and shoddily without a keyboard and mouse or the fact that FPS will always remain dumbed down and clumsy until an accurate aiming tool is introduced (Wii-Mote or mouse). MMO's will also have a hard time competing on the console market simply because of the control schemes. FFXI was pretty lame on the console due to the controls, as an example.

All in all, the controller is really archaic and isn't a very good means of accurate and variable user input. The wii-mote is a great tool which can be used like a mouse (I use it as a mouse on my PC when playing some RTS games because it's simply incredible fun), but the lack of customizations and buttons really make it pretty tame.

Most console games can be played on a PC with ease, and there is a reason for this. The control schemes for 90% of console games have basic and generic controls. Ninja Gaiden? Easily played on the PC. Racing games? Same thing. Fighting? It's better to have a joypad here, due to the joypad being able to replicate down, down right, right with ease. While keyboards can do this, the margin for error is much smaller. This could be remedied, though, with a mouse system for fighting games.

This is comparable to the 80gb PS3. You don't need it and it is overpriced, however, you can get it if you want. This is why people say it costs $600 to get a PS3 when it really does not.

Edit: Oops, double post.

PCs require too many hardware updates to play newer games. I bought an 8600 about a year ago, it's ALREADY way out of date.
If you had got yourself a 8800 you would have been fine, the 8600 was a crap card.
And yet I still game like the best of 'em with a 6150.

I say we lock this before it will melt and all of the outdated motherboards and all the rumble controllers will never be able to put it back up again.

Most consoles already support a keyboard and mouse, although the games aren't taking advantage of them, and with the inclusion of hard-drive space most games have the ability to take mods as well. I think it's only a matter of time before console games begin to support modding.

I used to be a big PC gamer but the cost of having the latest and greatest turned me away. In my opinion, in the future the desktop will become smaller and smaller until everything is the size of the Mac Mini or Eee PC, or replaced by a laptop, and consoles will replace the desktop in the role of the high-tech video and audio performance hardware. Consoles are going to be the next main family entertainment device, with movies downloaded onto your console, DVI being recorded to your console and games played on your console. Console prices will continue to go up and at some point become so expensive and complicated that they may come full circle before being replaced by a newer, slimmer, cheaper technology way down the road.

I think its declining, though not as fast as some alarmists are convinced.

Maybe it just has to do with money.

PC's will always be ahead when it comes to consoles, but it can be so expensive to uprgrade your pc. A friend once paid $5,000 so his computer could run Crysis.

However, with consoles, you just pay for it, and that's it. As of now, if any upgrades come for the system, you just download an update for free and keep on playing.

Wow, all of you fan boys need to get a life. Arguing about which system is superior cost wise or graphic wise is futile. Both types have their pros and cons, and neither of which is superior to the other. PC Gamers love the freedom that comes from being able to tinker and toy with their systems and games engines (i.e. Mods). They like the ability to be able to get the new technology first and reap the benefits of being able to upgrade whenever. Consoles offer cheaper and easier to use solutions for people that like to be able to hit the "on" button and play. The developers know that there is a majority of people that want that ease of use so they placate the masses with many exclusive titles.

Trying to compare apples to oranges is like watching monkeys try to procreate with a football. This conversation is fan boy circle jerk competition and amazingly... nobody is winning.

The misconception of "PC Gaming is dieing" is because gaming in general has gotten more and more mainstream. Consoles have a huge market footprint now because everyone and their dog has heard of or seen a game being played. The demand for more simplistic gaming systems is growing exponentially. Game developers see that now there is this huge potential for massive profits within this developing and evolving market. So they reorganize their tactics and staff to fulfill the demand for games on the more popular systems. This trend of readjusting company strategies happens within all business. Right now the trend in the games industry is aiming for the console and causal gamers. The Console Wars is a perfect example of game industry hype. The Wii has clearly been proven to be a huge success, but it is shunned by hardcore X-Box and PS3 players because it comes from a different brand. PC Gamers will always defend their hobby because it is the one they chose to go with.

A similar thing happens in a completely different field... Sports. Every team has their fans, and those fans will go the distance to defend the honor of their team. Same thing in the gaming world. [strong]BUT YOU ALREADY KNEW ALL OF THIS PEOPLE![/strong]

Long story short, I have a PC and Wii currently. My buddy has a PS3, X-BOX 360, and PC. We play all systems on a regular basis. We just tend to gravitate more to the PC only because it is more than a pure game system, we can do other things. Like: Animate, edit, film, write, and watch almost everything. Before you declare any system dieing or in decline, first take a look at how the system is really doing and the demographic of people using said system. A system is not dead until everyone, including the people who defended it, consider it dead or have moved on to something else.

VIVE DE LARGO EL PC! (Long live the PC for all you English speakers)
