Instead of a PC rpg, why not go pen and paper? Seriouslyh ... PC game = 10 - 20 hours ... D&D pen and paper = possibly years of gaming ... and it can be any setting you (and your party and dm) wants to play.

I've never understood why WoW isn't geeky whilst D&D is :p So give pen and paper rpgs a go and see if you like the feel of geeklove XD 4e (current version of D&D) is pretty easy to pick up.
Dude, seriously? You think that PC games take 10 - 20 hours? You are doing it wrong. The only PC rpg that /I/ can think of that you can beat in like 10 hours is FABLE. Trust me, that game was done wrong.

Most of the games listed above take more than 60 hours. I know I've spent more than 100 hours on each playthrough of Baldurs gate 2 and Icewind dale 2. Playthroughs of Morrowind seem more like a full time job.

Also, the truly hardcore don't play 3rd edition, because they are playing 2nd edition. It's the dividing line between dungeons and dragons and WotC d20 system, which worked fine for the Star Wars pen and paper rpg, but was an entirely different animal from dungeons and dragons. It is one of the greatest tragedies of our time that a playing card company stole the good name of dungeons and dragons and slapped the brand name on their product.

Planescape: Torment, if you evenly remotely liked the MotB expansion for NWN2. If you haven't played the expansion, then that's your answer.

But PS:T is just about the best, most detailed, darkest, and most well developed RPG story I've ever seen. Play it, because even if you don't like the gameplay (similar to BG2, but less robust, although spellanimations are just awesome), the story will change your perspective of what a game should deliver.

Any RPGs I could name for you at this point would be flash games.

Is this acceptable?

I'm actually interested, but are they good? I was thinking about making a smallish flash RPG once just to see if I could.

Okay, I need to find my list again, but off the top of my head:

Marduk, Sonny, Sinjid, Dead Frontier (actually an MMO) come to mind.

EDIT: Mardek, not Marduk, my bad.

Which is why I followed that statement up with 'Technically it is', because it's all done in the background. If you have 'auto pause' off, the whole game seems to just play out in real time. I fully understand how the combat system works, but I would not call BG turn based in the traditional sense.
Yeah, your follow-up just sounded a little like you thought it would be a "flowing" game, but even that wouldn't be a huge mistake.
I know exactly what Baldur's Gate is like. I've played through the saga more times then I can count.
And I would absolutely consider it a 'flowing' game. Is it a 'Diablo' clone? Absolutely not. But it does indeed flow.
Mhm..they do indeed flow...really, the rolls and calculations are still going on as you mentioned, but, it's about as turn-based as an FPS is. And oddly enough, I've found the more modern incarnations actually are too slow paced for me, Neverwinter Nights 2 for example starts off very slow and feels strangely clunky the whole way through, it's an okay game mind you, but I certainly wouldn't take it over Baldur's Gate or Planescape any day.

To the OP, The Witcher could be a good bet if you were looking for something a little more speedy. The combat is third person and consists mainly of clicking the mouse and timing it to chain attacks. The quests aren't the most...robust, that is mainly fetch n' kill X quests, but the plot is pretty good, coming from a series of Polish fantasy novels.

Word of caution though, there's explicit sex (netch..well, to -clarify- it's not the sex that's explicit: It's the 'collectable' in game cards you get for having said sex which are often pornographic in nature, a few are tasteful nudes though), and actually, that's not really the problem, it's just I felt really it was implemented in a trashy way, I guess if it's your thing fine, but there are certain points in the game where it bumps up against the plot where you wish it wouldn't. Otherwise it's optional and you can ignore it. Stupid pr0n cards...*grumbles*

I'm looking for a PC RPG to keep me off MMOs, but don't really know anything but the big titles.

Some things I have played.
I think I'm done with the Elder Scrolls games I have didn't get very far with either but about 30+ hoursish. Not really feeling starting a new character in them. (Maybe Morrowind.)
Definatly done with Fallout 3, played the hell out of that. (and F2)

Finished both Neverwinter Nights and I have the whole Baldurs Gate collection sat downstairs which I'm thinking about playing but Turn Based isn't what I'm really wanting.

Other than that there's nothing I can think of RPG wise until Dragons Age comes out.

Any gems I have missed? Don't care how old really as long as they are good and will last me a month. :)

Cheers for any input, will return the favour one day with FPS knowledge.
Vampire Masquerade: Bloodlines (i suggest this top)
The Witcher (very long game)
Age of Pirates 2: City of Abandoned Ships (very hard, but very fun game)

Well, you say you're waiting for Dragons age, means you're okay with bioware. I would defnitly give Mass Effect a try. It's also from bioware and it's very, very, good.

I picked it up not expecting too much and it blew me away. Good story, fun gameplay, and amazingly high production values. One of my favorite games of the last few years, and for 30$ on steam, it's also cheap.

Baldur's Gate is not turn based.
Well, I suppose technically it is, but the game only 'stops' if you pause the game, otherwise it just goes.
Which is why I TOTALLY recommend the BG series. And get the BGComplete MOD to combine both 1 and 2 (And their expansions) into one massively huge game in the BG 2 engine, which means higher resolutions and the character class kits like 'Bounty Hunter' and 'Undead Hunter Paladin'. I'm a massive BG fan, and can't help but gush and recommend them over and over again.
I've heard a lot about Baldur's gate, but i've never checked it out. How much do you think it's going for nowadays? I'm going into the city tomorrow, so I'll check it out there.

and to be on topic... well, I don't really know what to recommend. the RPGs I play are about the same as yours.

If you haven't played mass effect, I highly recommend it. A killer story with terrific voice acting is really a no-brainer, unless you're more into the swords and dragons RPG.

KOTOR 1 is pretty great, KOTOR 2 isn't quite as good, though its still a good game. And if your feeling a bit retro Diablo 2 is still very playable and 3 is out at some point, so its worth catching up on the story :)

To everyone suggesting KOTOR, I have number two lying around somewhere, I just couldn't get it to run on my computer. :/ Was too buggy.

I tried a demo of Diablo 2 and it really didn't impress me at all, I really wanted to get into it to see what D3s hype is about.

Well, I dont know ... take oblivion .... main quest could be done (if played hard) in 5-6 hours.

Morrowind us an entirely different game to oblivion. Morrowind demands running around to millions of different sites ... Oblivion's fast travel, whilst less annoying, seems to bleed alot of the adventure of travelling around Cyrodiil.

And I prefer 3rd ed to 2nd ed. THAC0 was damned stupid. Plus I like the meatyness that druids get in 3.x ... 2nd ed they were gimped

The Witcher: Enhanced Edition. One of the best RPGs in recent years.

And it's sequel, 'The Witcher: Assassin of Kings' will probably come out next year or 2011. Can't wait for that one.
