That's actually quite interesting. If we can go even further with this, we could actually have cryogenics be viable.
And that, would be extremly useful in all fields!

Wait, doesn't your brain get damaged if there's no oxygen for it for like, 10 minutes?
That's what I'm thinking.
I can see why they are doing this, but brain damage is the first thing I thought of.
I mean, there are people who nearly drowned who ended up totally brain damaged! And they are saying 10 hours?
Color me a skeptic, for now.

If I recall correctly, oxygen use/needs are reduced while sleeping, and further reduced in a coma. If the suspended animation state has similar effects, the brain may last longer on what's left in the nearby blood.
That's assuming that there's enough blood left in the wounded soldier to keep them alive until they can be treated (as it is meant to help combat blood loss, after all).

If they can get around the possibility of oxygen starvation, this could be quite an advancement. Though in practise it's closer to cryogenics than zombification...

Heh, this could be quite useful. I only hope it never falls into the hands on the public, though...
Interesting.
I was thinking quite the opposite.

Just last week I read in my neurology book that hemmorhage-based strokes are nigh untreatable and almost always fatal. How about using the damn stuff to stop regular folks from dying? o_O Once again I'm saddened by the prevalence of military application over civilian use.
It was mentioned at the end of the piece that there would certainly be civilian applications for the technology. Like many things, it'd be developed by the military and work its way into public use.
I know, I read the article. My point is that it's pretty crappy that the military seems to get a lot more resources than regular healthcare research. Says quite a bit about where a nation's priorities lie.

Edit: Holy crap, you're John Funk! I was quoted by John Funk! Excellent! :D

...intresting

I dread to think how, if this becomes the standard pratice in battle, this will affect the "hide in corner and wait for kool-aide on visor to vanish" model of injury will be changed in FPS

good thing I've already read the Zombie Survival Guide. In theory this is good I guess, but to me personally, I think we're dabbling in a super science better left alone. This just sounds way to much like the start of a zombie flick. Better stock up on supplies now peoeple.

If it brings more boys home from battle, then its great. But of course this has bigger implications then just military. Car crash victims, for instance. In a serious car crash, by the time the EMT's get there and get the victim extracted, they have lost valuable time to save the victims life.

We'll either get to see some cool video of pigs and rats being brought back from the dead or its Resident Evil 2 except pigs will also be the carriers.

I never factored undead pigs into my zombie apocalypse survival plan, time to go back to the drawing board.
I think they fit in the category as the man eating pigs from that Hannibal Lecter movie so just treat them like slow zombie St. Bernards.
