The quote feature is there to be used, what would be the point of having it if you don't use it when its appropriate/convenient? Though I do agree that if you use them you should cut out images etc.

Nope, not at all, the quote system is very useful.

This is a forum for discussion, in order to have a well organised discussion with someone you need to know who you're talking to. Whenever someone quotes you you are sent a message, this way you know that someone is having a discussion/arguement/debate with you and you can easily respond.

I like the quote system as it is very easy to have a discussion with someone then on the thread, also seeing 1 new message (especially if it is a quote) gives me a good feeling for some reason.

I usually do it so I don't have to type out who I'm responding to, also allows the person I'm responding to to see it in their mailbox if the leave the thread so they can see what I had to say.. Some threads move along rather quickly so, easier to use a quote. And sometimes you want to point out specific statements and comment, useful there too.

I don't really see the harm in it.

The quote feature is fine, in fact it's very useful on a long and rambling thread to be able to see what context things are being said in.
That said, we don't need the entire post. Just put in the sentence or two you're addressing and let the reader go back to the other post (through the link, assuming you've done it right and not just copied and pasted into blank {QUOTE}{/QUOTE} tags) if they want to read the whole thing.

Yes that was actually sarcasm

Care to take a guess what post I replied to?

I'm all for being clear about who you're replying to, but why not use an "@User" format rather than filling the page with things that have already been posted.
That only works if you're talking to people who are happy to sit in one thread and hit refresh occasionally. Some people (myself included) don't stay in one forum for any real length of time, so an @Grouchy Imp in a later post will not attract my attention as I'll be on my soapbox in another thread by then, but a 'quoted' message in my inbox alerts me that I need to go back and perhaps defend a previous assertion.

Also, you do realise that starting a thread about how you hate people constantly quoting others can only end one way, right?

I understand why somebody would use it when they are referring to an older post, but I see so many people quoting the post immediately before theirs, because obviously the average person doesn't know how to look up.

other things that annoy me are quotes within quotes, and people who don't remove pictures and videos from quotes, and people who quote a wall of text and refer to a specific sentence without pointing out which sentence they are referring to! seriously! snip your quotes!!!

I agree with the stuff that I put in italics, but I don't agree at all with the part I bolded. Yes, people can look up, but we'll assume they're replying to the OP if nothing indicates otherwise. Yeah, you could just use their name, at least as long as they haven't posted several replies, but why do that when the quote feature allows you to quote their exact words so that people can see both what you're saying and what you're replying to?

I do it for the notification, and so people always know who I'm talking to.

BRANCING FOR QUOTING

But i think it sused very well on this forum, its a nice way to reply to someone and get their attention via their imbox (as opposed to wait for them to read the ocmment and reply in the thread)

Has it really got to the point where we're complaining about this?

It really isn't a big deal at all. Through quoting a user you're giving their post recognition, saying that it is worth repeating, as well as letting them know someone has read their post and has a response. It has nothing to do with people being too impatient to hang about in a thread. Not being harsh man but, just deal with it?

Currently finding it hilarious that this thread is full of more quotes than most average topics.

On topic, I'm completely alright with quotes. Sometimes chain quotes can get messy, but most people on the site clear a quote up whenever it gets out of hand.
It was inevitable. I knew this thread was going to be quoting the OP before I even clicked.

I tend to hit quote when the page I'm posting on is kinda long because I don't want a reply to something to be left dangling at the top of a new page.

I am pretty ruthless at editing quotes down to size, though. If I'm only replying to a single sentence, I'll cut everything else.

I love quotes! Then I know when people are talking to me.
I totally agree to that! High five!

But seriously, quotes are good. It helps to keep track of a certain discussion with specific people on a thread with bazillions of posts. Such as this one.
Also, if quotes are too big, you could replace it with a -snip- although I dislike this method since it blacks the ideias of the poster you're quoting. The spoiler tag though is much more to my liking.

They're totally awesome!

The only quote thing that bothers me is when a user quotes the OP. Reading an entire Thread conversation before posting can be tedious.
Oh yeah. I agree so much with this. I have no problem with anyone quoting me, or someone quoting others, I often happen to miss certain posts and see the post being quoted on the page I am currently on may open my eyes to the fact that the post is even there. However, if there's one post EVERYONE will read it is the first post. You don't go into a topic and just answer whatever you feel like. You read the post that opens the thread, make up an opinion on what to reply with according to this. There's no need to fucking quote it! We all read it. This is of course unless they quote small parts of it to actually debate a single point of the OP, but in general, yeah. Don't quote OP.

Whenever someone quotes me I think of that as a good reason to keep the discussion rolling since I don't really have time to watch every thread I've ever participated in.

Mad World said:
I could see why quoting the OP could seem annoying, but the same applies here, too. By quoting the OP, you send him/her a message which notifies him/her that someone was quoting. And that could be useful (for the OP, in this case) in order to know who to respond to.
Actually the OP is more likely to check if his thread got any replies and doesn't need to be notified because in a way every post is a reply to him/her.

All you get is a list of 10 comments or so where a lot of random users are arguing about something that was said 4-5 pages back and you can't know what that post said without actively looking for the post in question. Even if you find it there's no way of knowing if you find the correct post, or a different post by the same user. That's what he meant with his post. You see who replied, you just don't see what he replied to. I liked it the way it was before when the comments that was a reply to other comments were placed under the one they replied to, but Youtube has had several stupid changes the last few years...
In view all comments the comments come below the people that they are replying to.
